I want to know what kernel varaints different distros of linux support. As of now, I am downloading OS and running:
rpm -qa kernel-*
to find out if it supports smp,PAE, xen or default kernel.Is this right way to check?
I'm trying to find out when QME2572 (Qlogic) card became support by the kernel. We have a RHEL 5.1 system that is moving to new hardware, however the kernel at this release doesn't support the new hardware, due to the Qlogic card change. I tired the Redhat KB and Bugzilla. Is there a Kernel change list etc I can search. Never really played around with the kernel too much so I'm just after some pointers for looking up this information. Offically its not supported until Redhat 5.3, I'm trying trying to research kernel info so I can tell the customer they have to upgrade.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI compiled my own kernel with tun/tap and bridge support. Both modules load fine at boot time (I could read that in the dmesg output). Now I want to use it, and the /dev/net/tun node is not there, so my application gives that error. I'm trying to bridge openvpn connections. Is it possible that udevd is not doing his work?
PS: I'm on a WD MyBook World Ed NAS device. It's ARM, so I cross compiled the kernel from my debian linux machine. I also installed debian on the NAS.)

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have just started to work with BeagleBoard and built the Linux kernel (version 2.6.30.5) and download to the board and it start. I have also connected to the board over serial to Putty terminal.
Now I want to connect to the Beagle Board using USB instead of serial and I am looking for some info on how to do this.
My goal would be to connect to board over USB and then be able to:
* Download my own binary files/programs from PC over USB to BeagleBoard
* Communicate over USB instead of UART/Putty to get log and execute commands

How do I build the Linux kernel with USB support, meaning what settings should be ticked in menuconfig? Or is it already included?
How do I enable USB OTG in menu config?
I assume I would need some driver on my PC with Windows XP to connect to my BeagleBoard over USB. Were can I find this USB driver?

When using make menuconfig - under Device Drivers --> Character Devices --> there should be an option with the label "Enhanced Real Time Clock Support" (CONFIG_JS_RTC).
The problem is that this option seems to only show up while using the menu method when other options are either enabled or disabled and I've entirely forgotten what should be what. I swear fingered it out once.
This is on an older computer (P4) so HPET is no good.
You would think that disabling the HPET option would enable the RTC option but that does not appear to be the case.
I understand I can just add the option to the .config file and avoid this hassle but I'm very interested to know how to make this work.
To show my appreciation I will do something nice for you such as call you a nice name or tell you that you are pretty (or ugly if that's what you prefer).
so the google chrome web browser for linux says it runs on Ubuntu. If i installed Linux Mint which is based on Ubuntu and uses the same kernel, could I run the google chrome web browser on there?

I have a fairly old laptop that has been running 8.04. I got the 10.04 alternative CD and updated the system. After the reboot the screen just stays blank. I have left it running for some time to see if anything happens. I have tried to CTRL+ALT+F1 to get a console. But nothing.
So I looked up some solutions on the internet and decided to try xubuntu too see if this may be related to the low (old) specs of the laptop. Got the xubuntu CD. But even booting from the xubuntu CD (try before you install) results in a blank screen. 9.10 boots fine from the CD, but I have not tried to install it yet.

I have tried telling alsa to load profile for 3stack and 6stack configurations. However, most of the models listed for acer seem to be laptops. In my case I am running a ACER aspire ASE380 I have tried a few of the acer model listings with moderate success. My system is running ALC888 ( is it possible that its being identified incorrectly by the system? ) with 6 analog stack + 1 optic + 1 coax + 1 front mic + 1 front head-phone. I am wondering how the models differ from each other in the conf files. Can any one tell me where to look?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI just got a laptop (DELL PP06S) from a friend set up on kubuntu. He told me to download and run the updates packages if I had time. So so did I and now the computer stops on an error at boot and I can't log in at all to type any command. The error message coming up is:

And it seems to try that action over and over but I never get to log in and type any command. I got told to check the drive cables connections, which I did but it made no difference. I also got told that I could try to start with an older kernel, I tried all the different kernels available in the GNU GRUB but no success. The different options availables are:

Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.32-26-generic (recovery mode)

From my understanding these are the new and older kernels, is that right? I had to do the updates in 3 times so I guess the kernel from before then isn't in the list anymore. Every one of them shows the same error message and no way to get a console. So I can't type any command. Though, I found out that I can type commands in the GRUB, is there any way to change the kernel from the GRUB? If so what would be the commands?
I have a HP laptop which can support 1600x900. But after I install ubuntu 9.10 on it, it can only support up to 1280x700. My laptop has a Nvidia graphics card. And i am using GNOME as my desktop environment.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI compiled the 2.6.31.6 kernel and <insert drumroll> it boots!(my first kernel roll, I'm kind of shocked actually) That's the good news. The bad news is that my NVIDIA drivers are gone in the wind. That's not entirely true as I can still boot into the old kernel and startx. Is there a way to download the driver using the command line for reinstall?

I would like to save myself from compiling custom kernel and all following fiddling (nvidia drivers, virtualisation software etc) and 64bit OS is not for me - too many apps that I need are missing, of poor quality or need more manual intervention. Actually if bigmem / whatever it is called is configured in the default kernel, this may be the reason to switch. I intend to use 4 to 8 GB memory and it's a desktop, so server builds (like Ubuntu) are not for my taste.

I am a long time (1.something) slackware user and maintainer of a mirror site.I'm suddenly having problems with my favorite distro. (1) I've been mainly running Slackware64. When I was experiencing recent problems on a Slackware (32) 13.1 system, I discovered the huge-smp kernel does not support more than 4G of RAM. This is an obvious bug, and I am shocked that there is no fix out yet. Surely I can't be the only Slackware 32 user with >4G of RAM. I've verified it on a 12G i7 system and an 8G Athlon64-X2 system.

I have been unable to boot my CoreExpress Atom Z530 based board from flash, because my 2.6.31.6 kernel does not seem to have support for the (US15W chipset) IDE controller configured. I have read many web links that point to CONFIG_PATA_SCH as the key, but that does not work for me. I _can_ boot RedHat 2.6.18-164.e15 which does not have CONFIG_PATA_SCH configured, but I believe they are using initrd.

I have a PCI SCSI controller with this chipset that was working fine in 10.04 to drive a Polaroid Sprintscan 35 Plus scanner. Having just run the upgrade to 10.10, the scanner is no longer being seen. If I go into the controller BIOS the scanner is seen there, and running lspci shows the controller as
