General :: Check If A SD Card Is Bootable With Extlinux?
Jun 17, 2011
I installed different linux distros on a SD card (for travelling). How can I check if this SD card will be bootable? (my old PC dont boot via SD/USB, so I cannot verify is everything is correctly installed and cannot verify if the SD card on an USB adapter would run). I am travelling next sunday from Germany to Ireland and will have access to PCs which are bootable via USB; I would like to test it till Sunday).

I have a Slackware 12.2 DVD, I was ready to install it when I noticed some scratches on it. I do not know how to install Slack currently, therefore I do not want to mess with the installation. What is the way by which I can be sure that the ISO image in that DVD is intact ?

Earlier today I created a bootable USB stick by executing a script file that came with the distro for that purpose and experienced no problems. Later on, I tried exactly the same thing but using a SD card via a USB adaptor and it didn't work. Is there some difference in geometry between these two media types that could cause this problem?

creating a bootable floppy from a bootable floppy image on a NON Linux machine I am trying to install dsl (damnsmallLinux) on one of my old Compaq 2000 Deskpro machine having 256RAM and 2 GB hardisk. (which I hope to increase to 8 or 10 GB ...can I use a larger disk capacity??) I have downloaded the floppy bootable image from the website using a machine a fedora OS machine that does not have a floppy drive. I have even converted the image file to an iso file. I can copy this image file or iso file to the Compaq machine but how do I use it as a bootable floppy? OR how do I create a bootable floppy disk from this image?

I am trying to use Unetbootin and there I can see my USB drive: /media/PENDRIVE/XtraOrdinary_2010_for_XO-1_Download_Edition.img
So far so good.
"But" the target only lists devices:
/dev/sda1
/dev/shm
/dev/sdf1
/dev/sdd1
/dev/sda

I am running 8.10 desktop on an MSI Wind desktop. Everything is on the single 500GB hard drive. I also have a 4GB CompactFlash card in the system that has a working version of 8.04 desktop on it. I would like remove 8.04 from the CF card and copy/clone the currently configured 8.10 onto it as a backup just in case I accidentally trash the 8.10 installation on the HDD some time. I'd also like to be able to update the CF backup easily periodically to keep it current with the setup running off the HDD.
The HDD is partitioned as follows.
Code:
ken@pinot:~$ df
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/sdb2 9843308 800448 8542840 9% /
tmpfs 1032220 0 1032220 0% /lib/init/rw
[Code].....

I am trying to install Ubuntu Netbook 10.04 on my eee pc. I have a macbook pro with built in SD card reader and a 4 gig sd card. I followed the instructions on the ubuntu netbook download page to create the bootable usb media and it appeared to work, but was not bootable for either the eee pc or the macbook.
I also posted under the apple section of the forums here: [URL]... I also tried using VirtualBox to create a virtual machine that I could install ubuntu directly onto the SD card, but VirtualBox can't work with the built in SD card reader apparently.

I'm trying to make a bootable SD card on my macbook pro with built in sd reader so that I can load ubuntu netbook on my eee pc.
I followed the instruction on the Ubuntu Netbook download page, and it appears to work, but the SD card isn't bootable. I've tried to boot from it on both the eee pc and the macbook.
If you know how to do this, or know of some alternative way I can load ubuntu netbook on my eee pc that would be great.

How do you check if a computer's video card will support Kernel Mode Switching BEFORE OS installation?
In this example I have an Acer Aspire AST180-UA381B.
Manufacture website says my video card is: Integrated nVidia MCP61
[URL] ....
Nouveau code list says: NV4C (MCP61) GeForce 6150LE / nForce 400/405, GeForce 6150SE Quadro NVS 210s / nForce 430
[URL] ....
I want to know:
1. How to tell if my graphics card will support KMS before I install the OS?
2. If it does not support KMS which kernel options should be passed to get it to work properly with the nouveau driver?
3. Ultimately I am looking for a tool that should be included in the installation screen that will:
a. identify your hardware: list the hardware detected on the screen
b. highlight with color code any hardware listed that is not supported or poorly supported: in this case graphics drivers
c. perform a quick benchmark test of your hardware: In this case I want the benchmark to tell me what capabilities my graphics card has.
d. automatically recommend and set the best kernel parameters for a successful boot: if the graphics card needs nomodeset or modeset=0 or whatever I want it to do it for me.
Also I started a personal blog about this issue which I intend to compose into guide to assist others with this question. [URL] ....
My goal is to create a boot disc that will automate proper installation of graphics or other hardware for a system BEFORE installation. I would like to see this feature included in the Debian installation screen.

I have a GeForce 8600M GS card in a Dell Vostro 1710, which has appeared to be playing up lately, but I'm unsure whether it's the hardware itself or have I not properly set things up.
I have Ubuntu 10.04 installed with compiz, and 'rotate cube' enabled. The 'deformation' is set to cylinder. I recently tried using rss-glx (really slick screensaver) when the slow-down and screen freezes happened.
The symptoms:
Odd behaviour begins after attempting to log in after the screensaver has blanked the screen, i.e. screensaver ran for a while then the screen blanked. When logged back in, a 'cylinder' rotate freezes and the screen does not refresh. Clicking around the screen refreshes it somewhat. Switching between screens becomes next to impossible and a restart is required.
In general rotating the cube is OK, rotating the cylinder seems a task on the video card and rotating the sphere is horribly slow.
Things done so far:
Each time I log in, I need to open the NVidia settings and change the powermizer to 'prefer maximum performance'. On next reboot I will try this in xorg.conf code...
My questions are:
- How can I verify the card is working correctly, enough to be able to decide whether it's hardware or software at fault?
- If the hardware is proven to be OK, what am I then leaving out?

If I dd copy a bootable usb drive to an iso will the iso be bootable?
I haven't tried it yet, but i'm going to. Heres the situation and tell me if I'm crazy.
I have several bootable CDs I use at work to do different things, so I went ahead and made a multi-boot usb stick with the isos on them and everything is golden. When i need something else, I am able to slap the ISO on the usb stick, edit the menu.lst and I'm good to go.
The problem is, for some of our equipment I have a bootable USB stick that I have to use. I tried copying the files on the bootable USB to my multi-boot usb and setup grub to boot it (which admittedly I'm no expert at), but have had no luck.
So now I'm thinking, I'll use dd to copy the bootable USB stick to an iso (using bs=2048) and then do my normal setup with an ISO and maybe it will work.

I have a unique issue. Unique in the sense that I have only found the opposite of what I'm after so far. Here goes:
I have a special bootable "Linux" USB. Tested the USB and it boots up and builds any old PC - with an appropriate BIOS. I would like to convert this USB - better still its contents - to an ISO.
Reason? VMWare server doesn't support USB bootable BIOS at present. Not sure it ever will.

Have following problem:
Computer has 3 partitions: windows swap, windows recovery, and 3rd, which currently has linux.
There is grub installed, which lets me choose to run windows recovery, or linux. Both boot fine.
But. I'd like to remove Linux, and use recovery to install windows. When I boot to recovery, and make it install windows, it does so, but after rebooting all I get is:
error: no such partition
grub rescue>
ls shows 3 msdos partitions, but I don't know what to do with it further.
When I did boot Linux rescue, and overwrote first 446 bytes of /dev/sda to remove grub - computer doesn't boot at all.
I do not have any bootable windows disks, just the rescue. I do have another computer I can work on, so I can download stuff from internet if it would help me.
