Mar 25, 2011I have been playing with chroot to build packages.I am wondering about the limits or caveats of using chroot to mix operating systems. For example, what should I beware if I use 12.2 and chroot a 13.1 system? Or if I use 13.1 and chroot a 12.2 system? After all, the chroot does inherit some attributes of the parent system.There is the noticeable difference of kernel versions. For that one reason I'm thinking that mixing system versions might be frustrating.
My focus is building packages, not running an alternate operating system or a service such as ssh. I realize that building packages as root in a chroot potentially compromises security but that is not my focus.I am aware that a chroot is not a true virtual system.A virtual machine is an option, but in this thread I'm curious about the limitations of chroot. I find building packages in my virtual machines much slower than actual hardware, even with a dual core. Hence my interest in chroot

We have 8 machines powering a digital signage system. The machines are not physically accessible (without extreme difficulty) and are currently running windows XP with a VNC server for control.
I want them to run Ubuntu instead. Is there any way anyone can think of that I can do this? My only thought so far is WUBI...but once it boots into Ubuntu ssh isn't installed by default and vnc isn't enabled by default so I wouldn't be able to control it.
Also I'd really like to completely wipe out Windows and use only Ubuntu.

Apr 23, 2011I am in the process of running some benchmark tests on a variety of RDBMS, I am testing three different client operating systems.Would it be terrible to partition the HDD and install Ubuntu, Windows 7 and Solaris 10? If I do not do this, I will likely have to re-install the O.S numerous times due to changes in the database server o.s as well. The same question goes for the server; would it drastically effect the performance to install 3 server o.s on one server?

Assume also that in about six months I want to give this computer to Mr. X, but I do not want Mr. X to know that I have been using ubuntu. I don't want to install anything over top of ubuntu, I just want the computer to be completely (or as nearly completely as possible) blank so that Mr. X cannot infer what I've been doing on it. The trick here is that I can't use operating system x_{1} to delete operating system x_{0}. I don't want Mr. X to know anything about which OS I have been using. Mr. X, by the way, is a sophisticated computer user but not particularly interested in tracking me down. Once he sees that the computer is blank Mr. X will just install his own operating system and everybody will be happy.

At the moment I am using AntiX Mepis. I switched to Linux because my Windows used to freeze all of a sudden after a few hourse or even minutes.
Now my Linux was quite stable for a few days but again, it freezes in a few minutes when I use a Window Manager. In the terminal without using any Window Manager it never freezes.

The laptop showed me the above stated error. Now I am not able to boot any OS on it until I reconnect the external harddisk!

Since I will no longer use it as a desktop/working machine I'd like to set it up as a home server. However I can't decide which OS to use for that. I have access to all Windows Versions since XP/2003 (with the exception of Windows Home Server) and I have some knowledge using both Windows and Linux so that's not a problem on my choice.
