General :: Change Startup Script Sequence?

Sep 18, 2010

I have an external drive mounted courtesy of an entry in fstab. The drive isn't detected at boot time until AFTER the backuppc service that will use the drive has started. I have to therefore manually stop and restart the backuppc service once booting has completed, otherwise backuppc thinks there is no drive available to it.

How can I force the mounting of my external device to occur BEFORE the backuppc service starts?

I am using Ubuntu 10.04 server edition

General :: Start X Server And App At Boot (or Services Load) Time

Oct 14, 2009

I need to start an application (graphical) when the PC start, even before anybody login, and use/launch a specific user. Now only can do this manually; when gdm starts, switch to any text tty [ie. Ctrl + Alt + F1], then I login into the special user, start a X server, export the DISPLAY environment variable, and start the application.

With this steps:
Code:
$X :1 -verbose -nr -nolisten tcp &
# Maybe Metacity -> $ metacity
$export DISPLAY=:1
$JavaApp &
Now i need put this steps (script) in some place to launch the app automatically, and with and specific user [ie. manager].

How can I made it? Maybe in init.d? or an special xinitrc? And how can start the app with the specific user? And, if is possible, who can stop the app when the system going turn off? I have Debian 5.0 and a beginner knowledge of shell script.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Start Up Sequence?

Aug 1, 2010

I'd like to know what happens in between me selecting which kernel to boot from the Grub2 menu, and me ending up in Gnome looking at the desktop GUI.For instance, when does the X server start, when is gnome started, in what order do these things happen and how can i have control over this process? The main appeal of linux to me is being able to choose which window manager, which desktop environment etc are used but I cannot seem to find out how to configure these things.I've been googling extensively and looking in books, the forums, ubuntu community and documentation but this information does not seem to be out there.

Server :: How To Start Sequence Of Applications At Specified Time Intervals In Debian

Nov 18, 2010

I am currently running debian lenny on an old mini ITX box (1GHZ 1GB ram OS on a 16GB CF card, 4 X 1TB sata drives) as a file server on my home network. I have modified /etc/inittab to auto log in a standard user, start X and start fluxbox. I would like the system to then start a couple of VM's using virtual Box but as this is not a high spec box I would like to start these automatically at 5 min intervals and about 5 min after the auto log in.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how i can achieve this or alternativley monitor the processor load and start each VM in sequence as the porcessor load drops below 20%.

Ubuntu Networking :: Change The Sequence Of The Nameservers Or Insert A New One & Again It Works For A Few Days?

Aug 5, 2011

I have configured opendns on my adsl router. So 192.168.1.1 was the first nameserver in Network Managerbut I often faced name resolution issues, so I configured 4.2.2.1 as the first nameserver, 4.2.2.2 as the second & 192.168.1.1 as the third.Problem is with the above configuration everything works well for a few days then again name resolution stalls. And again I change the sequence of the nameservers or insert a new one & again it works for a few days. I am tired of doing that again & again.

Ubuntu :: None Of The Services Start?

Feb 9, 2010

I am running ubuntu 9.10 with the latest patches and all the prerelase patches. At some point and i am not sure when something broke and none off the services start during the boot. Also the virtual consoles do not start. The only services that start are the one that are controlled by the gnome session. In addition i cannot start the rescue mode. It stops loading at same point where the console should show up. I am guessing that the problem is related to the upstart but i am not sure. I never ever had problems with boot in linux and this is very frustrating. I feel like i am running windows and dont know how to troubleshoot. I cannot see anything in the log that would give me a hint? I dont know where too look. I tried to activate the bootlogd but it does not work. Probably beacause the services dont start correctly. Something broke and one of the updates must changed something but i dont know what and where? Anyone can recommend where to look? How do i see the interactive boot? I tried remove the splash and quiet from grub config but i could not see anything there. I got too fast to the x login.

Debian :: Start Services Without Root?

Feb 22, 2010

I've a little Server and wanna start the services (postfix, apache, etc.) without root. My problem is, that I've installed GroupOffice and I allways got errors about permisions in some folder. When I took a look, some of the folder the apache created were from root some from www-data. After some searches in the Internet I've read that only the root user is allowed to start a Service at Ports 1-1024 or something like that...

I've already searched for programs which give the rights to the applications / unlocks them with root for a certain application ... but I've no more idea what words to search for.

Where is that **itt implemented? Is it possible to disable that?

How can I start the services without giving them root privileges?! It's a security issue after all.

Ubuntu :: Standard Services Do Not Start At Boot?

Feb 17, 2010

I've been running Ubuntu 9.10 since November '09, and since a month or so I'm having boot problems. Gnome starts, but some core services such as ssh and dnsmasq (that have started on boot somewhere in time), don't start anymore. Neither does rc.local fire, so I basically have to startup these things by hand.

Also, I cannot get into the console anymore by using ctrl+alt+f*, because it gives a message like: Starting ntpd or starting libgcrypt 1.4.4, or something in that fashion.

My belief is that something is holding the boot procedure in a waiting state before services such as ssh get to start, but I can't seem to find anything in the log files.

SUSE :: Cannot Run Kernel 2.6.34.1 On SLES10 SP2

Jul 20, 2010

I am running SLES 10 SP2 with the default Kernel 2.6.16.x. For testing I would like to use last stable Kernel 2.6.34.1.

I found a tutorial which I used for compiling and setting up the new kernel. It's here: howtoforge.com<slash>kernel_compilation_suse

It is written for SLES 10 SP1 but should also work for SP2. Anyway ...

Basically I took the original .config file of kernel 2.6.16. from /boot and used it to build the new kernel. I make no changes to it.

When I boot with new kernel 2.6.34.1 I get errors similar to "no PCI device" and its not possible to enable eth0. Obviously there is something wrong.

Why is it not sufficient to take the original .config file for a new kernel?
