General :: Change The Permission Of /home Folder To 666?
Mar 17, 2010
By mistake I change the permission of /home folder to 666. when I run a $ls -la /home, it is showing following
[Code]...
dl3k is user name and having a folder in /home directory..now I cannot access/open the dl3k folder as a user.
I change the persmission to
# chmod 644 /home (default setting)
# chown -R dl3k /home
but still cannot access the content of /home folder as a user...

I have a dual-boot macbook with an OS X partition and an ubuntu partition. When I first installed ubuntu, I changed my home folder to my OS X home directory to synchronize all my files from both. My home directory is now /media/sda2/Users/username/. In a regular home folder, the icons for Documents, Music, Pictures, Movies, etc. are different (not just with emblems, but actually different icons). But when I changed my home folder, these subfolders' icons stayed the same as regular folder icons and I can't figure out a way to change that default setting. I know how to change the icons for each folder manually, but these changes don't appear everywhere (i.e. nautilus, places, etc). Furthermore, every time I change my icon theme, I would have to manually reassign icons for these folders. Is there a way to globally change the folder icons for these folders?

I was happily running Ubuntu Netbook Version 10.04 on my Dell Mini 10v, until I began having trouble booting up. I tried to upgrade to Ubuntu Netbook Version 11.04 to fix the problem. However, now I can not boot up unless it's to a USB drive with Netbook Version 11.04. I'd like to copy my files to an external hard drive so I can copy them to a new Macbook. However, when I boot to the USB and try to view my files in my HOME folder and other folders, they are X-ed out. They say that I don't have permission to view the files since I did not create them. Again, I only want to get the files onto an external hard drive and onto my Macbook. How can I gain access to my files?

I got ssh passwordless login to work. If /var/www permissions are set to 750 it works, but when trying to access the server from a browser it shows permission denied. When I set /var/www to 777, users can access the files through a browser but then ssh passwordless login doesn't work. Anyway around this, so both will work?

A rather new user here, was messing with the preferences on a user folder of mine on Karmic, looking for a way to make the folder invisible to users (like the old windows option). Set it to 'none', then closed it, returned to the directory finding the folder with a box with an 'x' on it.
Went to open it, it says 'access denied'. So I think 'okay, how do I undo that', go back to see if I can restore it back to 'read & write' with no sucess.
Seached the forums for a solution to this issue, most of solutions revolve around 'gksudo nautilus' which I attempted to open via command-line. Nothing seemed pop open after I entered my password in responce to entering said command-line, probably because I really don't know how to use Nautilus.

I've installed slax6 onto an ext3 partition and setup a users account, i've also just managed to mount some virtualbox shared folders which are working and i can access them fine. The problem is I cannot seem to give limited user accounts access to them. root can access them no problem! but right clicking and changing the permissions do nothing, because once I click apply, reopen the menu, the changes have reverted. I've tried chmod'ing them.. chmod o=rwx /mnt/folder I used 'o' because I can't seem to change the group permission for the folder. The shared folder I am mounting is formatted in NTFS and the other in ext3, I can't change the permissions of either.

i use virtual hosts to develop several web applications. These are located in my home folder under /home/user/projects/project After a fresh installation, i always get a 403 forbidden error. After googling and reading on this forum, several solutions are mentioned for this problem. But i can hardly believe putting using a chmod 755 on my home folder is a correct solution. What is the correct way of doing things in this situation?

I have a secondary disk which holds a /home directory structure from a previous install of Linux. I installed a new version on a new primary drive and mounted this secondary drive as the new /home. Problem is, even though the users are the same names and I can access the home directories for the users, I cannot login directly to their home directories, as I get the following error: -
Code:
login as: [me]
[me]@[machine]'s password:
Last login: Wed Jan 6 18:34:33 2010 from [machine]
Could not chdir to home directory /home/[me]: Permission denied
[[me]@[machine] /]$
Now, since the usernames are correct and the users are in the passwd file with the correct home directory paths, could it be user ID's that are different or something else? It's not as though I cannot access the home directories for the users, simply that I cannot log directly into them from a login prompt.

Having been converted to using "Linux" about 8 months ago, and gaining confidence to try different distros, and figuring out how to 'keep' my Home folder, I've had great fun trying them out and learning as I go. The latest distro I'm trying is Kubuntu, which I really like and will keep for a while. However, when I was partitioning in the set-up, I omitted to create my home folder. Instead I now have is a partition the size of my "old" home folder, and to which I have to sign into to gain access. The files are all there so that is no problem.
1. What i would like to know is if this set-up is OK, or should I change it so that it is actually in the home folder (if so how?( a re-install?))
2. If I should decide to try out another distro in the future will this be safe to change to "home"?.

As a precaution to protect my home folder contents when I reninstall ubuntu if need arises I intend to change my home folder location to a mounted ntfs partition in my HDD. How can I do it the GUI way? Like in windows the "My Documents" location can be changed by going to "My Document" properties and entering the new location.

Just did a new netbook install of Lucid. Went through the setup, putting in my usual username etc. But I thought as it's a portable, I'd better select the encrypted home folder option. All went OK.
I have a home network with a NAS and I needed to change the UID to 1004 to match the rest of the network.
That's when it all when wrong. If I do that, I end up with no permissions on the user folder. A bit of a paradox, you can't change UID if logged in, but unless you're logged in, can't access the files.
My attempts to get around it by changing UID's back chowning, changing back etc. have screwed things up completely.
I have managed to open the encrypted folder and chown, but after a reboot it's all back to the original UIDs, but now I can't get in at all.

When I installed Lucid and first switched language/locale settings, a window popped up asking me if I wanted to change the name of the Documents, Music, Video etc folders into the new language.
Originally I was worried that this might be some irreversible operation and said no and ticked the don't ask me again box.
It seems though that this is just a cosmetic operation and I'd quite like to use this function now. Does anyone know where I can change the setting to accomplish this?
