Ubuntu :: Accidental Permission Change To 'none' On Folder?
Mar 13, 2010
A rather new user here, was messing with the preferences on a user folder of mine on Karmic, looking for a way to make the folder invisible to users (like the old windows option). Set it to 'none', then closed it, returned to the directory finding the folder with a box with an 'x' on it.
Went to open it, it says 'access denied'. So I think 'okay, how do I undo that', go back to see if I can restore it back to 'read & write' with no sucess.
Seached the forums for a solution to this issue, most of solutions revolve around 'gksudo nautilus' which I attempted to open via command-line. Nothing seemed pop open after I entered my password in responce to entering said command-line, probably because I really don't know how to use Nautilus.
I'm trying to move a file to opt folder. But I cant do it because I dont have the permission to do it. In folder preferences it says " you are not the owner"How can I move a file to opt folder? or How can I change the folder permission settings?
Im trying to run Wow with Wine , But its telling me i need to give to the wow folder write access , so im right clicking on the folder , then Permissions , And it has create or delete folder already on , but right below im selecting Read and Write but it doesnt let me do it :/ just goes back to blank .
How do I permission a folder?I have a group called serveradmin..I want to add and give the group server admin write permissions to folder /logs.I know how to permission a file.. but changing the folder permissions isn't coming to me.I must add that I don't want to remove any of the current permission on the folder/directory.
I've installed slax6 onto an ext3 partition and setup a users account, i've also just managed to mount some virtualbox shared folders which are working and i can access them fine. The problem is I cannot seem to give limited user accounts access to them. root can access them no problem! but right clicking and changing the permissions do nothing, because once I click apply, reopen the menu, the changes have reverted. I've tried chmod'ing them.. chmod o=rwx /mnt/folder I used 'o' because I can't seem to change the group permission for the folder. The shared folder I am mounting is formatted in NTFS and the other in ext3, I can't change the permissions of either.
My first post. I've been using Ubuntu Server edition (Hardy) happily for some time now.
I use sudo regularly during configuration of new services. It always works/authorises within seconds, however, it recently became very slow, to the point of being nearly unusable.
In /var/log/auth.log I noticed a regular working pattern like this code...
I cannot change directory to a more than three folder tree destination folder from ~ in terminal. I've checked everything. No Typos or misspell. The destination folder was recognized by "ls" command but when I went to it, the terminal said, "no such file or directory."
I'm using ubuntu 11.04, I'm having some problem of ownership while sharing folder/files. to share i change the folder share option:1. Share this folder, then followed by 2.allow others to create and delete files in this folder3. guest access. Now if someone in my local network edit any file and save it, it gets locked. if some one copy their file in this folder the permission is marked as "no group" "no owner". and they get unaccessible to me. i tried doing chown <user> <folder> but it says Operation not permitted. Now how i can possibly share my folder on local network so that they can be edited by others without getting locked down , if they copy files i can able to modify them.
I have setup sharing on my macbook and my desktop pc. The sharing folder has all my music on my mac in it. It comes up on my desktop (ubuntu) as 'my name's public folder on my names's macbook' and i can go into it as get as far as the music folder but when i try to access it i get the folder contents can not be displayed you do not have permission to access this folder. How can i access it?
Im trying to change permissions so i can upload to my proftp server. i can download ok but i want to access most folders via ftp so i can upload to them, at the moment i get permission denied message.
I have a strange problem I ssh to a remote server using the username "madel" and it gives me a strange error:
Last login: Wed Sep 8 18:17:51 2010 from greece.doe.carleton.ca Could not chdir to home directory /home/madel: Permission denied grep: /home/madel/.bashrc: Permission denied Preparing your .bashrc for Linux
I have samba allowing only known users, and on the ubuntu side, I have the folder permission 777. I have the same exact samba smb.conf file(locations of course matching new server), but I can't get it to authenticate with the new server(Old server is up and running too) and I'm lost. I thought I had it figured out when I did my last server, but I seem to be missing something on this one.
I was happily running Ubuntu Netbook Version 10.04 on my Dell Mini 10v, until I began having trouble booting up. I tried to upgrade to Ubuntu Netbook Version 11.04 to fix the problem. However, now I can not boot up unless it's to a USB drive with Netbook Version 11.04. I'd like to copy my files to an external hard drive so I can copy them to a new Macbook. However, when I boot to the USB and try to view my files in my HOME folder and other folders, they are X-ed out. They say that I don't have permission to view the files since I did not create them. Again, I only want to get the files onto an external hard drive and onto my Macbook. How can I gain access to my files?
I have a folder with the following permissions: drwx--S--- 10 user group 4096 2010-08-30 17:27 FolderName....Could someone kindly explain to me what the --S is? I would like to change the permissions of FolderName to either chmod 770 or 750.I was just wondering if changing the permissions will affect the --S?
I got ssh passwordless login to work. If /var/www permissions are set to 750 it works, but when trying to access the server from a browser it shows permission denied. When I set /var/www to 777, users can access the files through a browser but then ssh passwordless login doesn't work. Anyway around this, so both will work?
I'm running WoW through wine. In order to install addons I need to give all the files in the program permission to execute as a program. the problem is I can't (dont know how) just right click the folder and give everything inside permission i have to open each one and give them all permission, which can quickly turn into hundreds depending on the addon. how to give permission to execute as a program to all the files in a folder at once it would save me a lot of clicking and time.
I'm having an odd problem (although I'm probably missing something obvious to a non-semi-newbie):I have a directory used for samba shares which is owned by user fred, a system user which the windows clients on my network authenticate with to access the shares. I, roger, want to access the directories without having to put my 'sudo boots' on every time, so I made the directory group users and added roger to that group, and changed the file/folder modes from 0755 to 0775.However I still do not have write permissions inside the directory; I still seem to be considered 'other' and hence only have read and execute.
I have a folder name is /home/kemal. I want to give a permission to an user name is kaplan. I want to see this user name is kaplan that must see kemal folder's contents.
i have the one help. i will creata one samba server.access this samba file windows system. also domain user access this samba folder. but problem is how can set permissions AD User( Windows 2008 Server).
I have setup a NFS server and this the content of /etc/exports at the server with IP A.B.C.D1 is:/home/shared A.B.C.D2(rw,no_root_squash)Problem is, only the root at A.B.C.D1 and A.B.C.D2 can write to that folder.
I have a system in which I do not have root access to. On that system, I have my own directory which I share with other users. I am trying to clean it up when I noticed that there was a subdirectory created by another users in my group that I cannot delete. It has all the permissions set besides global write. How can I delete this folder without root permission? I can't even chmod or chown it.
I wanted to create an encrypted volume that was accessible from F12 and WinXP. Using RealCrypt, I created a volume on a NTFS partition and formatted it as NTFS.
mount point: /home/user1/safe user dir: /home/user1/safe/folder
The permissions for "/home/user1/safe" change from 755 to 700 and I am unable to access "/home/user1/safe/folder". Also "home/user1/safe/folder" changes owner and group to root with permissions of 700. My guess is that this is being caused by ntfs-3g, but how to pass on uid options in this example. Is this even doable?
