View 1 RepliesExperienced sys admin with over 20 years experience of Solaris and HP-UX, but limited Red Hat knowledge.
I dont want to do the basic linux courses and spend days learning how to use vi etc.
I was thinking of jumping straight in and doign the RHCSA Rapid track course or even the RHCE Rapid Track course.
Of course, if I ask Red Hat they'd tell me I had to do the courses before this.
Unfortunately, funds are limited (personal training grant) so its one course only.
I have been using VMware Player for some time to host Fedora VMware images on Windows XP. I have been using Fedora 11 and 12 (both 32 and 64 bit) and recently started to use Fedora 13.
I use as a base the images provided by thoughtpolice. http://www.thoughtpolice.co.uk/
I usually install VMware tools and also keep the images updated (yum update) which sometimes changes the kernel.
I have recently had problems with the snapshots not having a network when I restore them. So far I don't have the problem with Fedora 11 and do have it with Fedora 12 (but used not to). I do have it with Fedora 13.
In each case the problem goes away when I uninstall the VMware tools and comes back when I install them again.
One of the symptoms is that SElinux complains about not being able to do something with /var/run/vmware-active-nics.
It looks to me that something is incorrect in the actions being taken when the snapshot is being restored. It does not happen every time and sometimes the network restores itself.
The network can be restored by rebooting the image.
I'm trying to access the VMWare console from firefox using the VMWare plugin. The problem is that it doesn't work on Firefox version 3.6.8. So how can I access the console?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI keep training SpamAssassin with the spam that slips through, but don't see any improvement is spam detection. The details are these: Using ssh I trained SpamAssassin with examples of spam and ham I had saved for that purpose, perhaps 500 of each. I set up email recipes such that spam@example.com would go through sa-learn --spam --mbox, and ham@example.com would go through sa-learn --ham --mbox. Since then I have forwarded (as an attachment) any spam that slips through to spam@... and an equal amount of fresh ham to ham@...
That worked well for about a year. Spam in the inbox went from 150 per day to less than one per week on average, with no false positives. Naturally, spam blooms sometimes appeared, but training dealt with them.
I wrote up my spam setup in greater detail in these notes to myself:.. For the past month or so, however, a steady stream of nearly identical spam has been getting through and despite training it all I see no change in spam scores on it. Here are relevant headers from a typical message:
(snip)
X-Spam-Status: No, hits=-6.6 required=3.5
tests=BAYES_00,RCVD_IN_DNSWL_MED,STOX_REPLY_TYPE autolearn=ham
version=3.002005
(snip)
X-AVES-Antispam: Maybe spam, 17.32 >= 4.00 [as:15.30 cc:0.00 hc:2.02
sa:17.32]
(snip)
Notice that a spam filter on an upstream server correctly flagged it, but my SpamAssassin. Nor does the score on these nearly identical messages seem to change with training. Another clue: previously my spam folder was receiving fresh spam every hour. Since this problem began the spam folder receives almost nothing.
Sure, it would be easy to cook up a procmail recipe to filter on the upstream server's "maybe spam" header, but I'd rather fix the underlying problem with SpamAssassin, not cover it up. Prior to coming here I searched the web, consulted my web host's knowledge base's articles on SpamAssassin, and read everything relevant at spamassassin.apache.org, but I remain stumped.
The issue is i am using the RHEL server as my webserver and database centre. Now its a brand new formatted server with good amount of RAM and the usage is not much. Its being accessed locally over the LAN. But still i can see speed deficiency. Some of the pages do not get loaded and some times i can see the delays in loading the new pages. Any idea y is it so? Or is there anything i can do to increase the speed?

The installation of VMware Server 2.0.2 for Linux completed successfully. You can decide to remove this software from your system at any time by invoking the following command: "rpm -e VMware-server".
Before running VMware Server for the first time, you need to configure it for your running kernel by invoking the following command: "/usr/bin/vmware-config.pl".
I tried this command and find the this message
[Akram@localhost Downloads]$ su -c "/usr/bin/vmware-config.pl" Password: Making sure services for VMware Server are stopped.
None of the pre-built vmmon modules for VMware Server is suitable for your running kernel. Do you want this program to try to build the vmmon module for your system (you need to have a C compiler installed on your system)? [yes] yes
Using compiler "/usr/bin/gcc". Use environment variable CC to override.
Your kernel was built with "gcc" version "4.4.2", while you are trying to use "/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.4.3". This configuration is not recommended and VMware Server may crash if you'll continue. Please try to use exactly same compiler as one used for building your kernel. Do you want to go with compiler
"/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.4.3" anyway? [no] yes
What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel?[/usr/src/linux/include]
Now it asks me in last lines that "What is the location of Directory of C header files that match your running kernal?"
Is it possible to install Snow Leopard 10.6.6 VMware AMD edition (which I downloaded) on VMware linux? It is under Windows 7 so I just need to know if everything of VMware linux (like Hardware Virtualization) is the same under linux as for Windows.

I have installed the latest version of Ubuntu Linux (11.04) into latest VMware workstation (7.1.4 build-385536). I have tried to install the VMware tools ISO that came with VMware workstation but It didn't work and the installation seemed real sloppy anyways.
I installed the open VMware tools from synaptic within the guest linux and restarted, everything seemed to have been installed just fine but VMware Workstation doesn't detect it. I'm not sure if the tools are outdated, silent errors happened, or if any manual post installation steps need to be taken.

I completed the installation of VMWare Server 2.0.2 onto a CentOS 5.4 64-bit distribution. There is a VMware virtual machine file on the server in question, and I want to activate it through the application console.
I did not see anything readily apparent that would facilitate the importing of the virtual machine file. Does anyone have a procedure that can accomplish this task?
I am trying to download programs from the Ubuntu software Centre and keep being asked for an authentication password.The only passwords I have are for this site, default keyring and the terminal. How do I set up this password and where?
I have found the answer. It is my Terminal Password that is required to enter the Ubuntu Software centre.
I am running an up to date Debian Lenny system with vmware 1.08 server installed.
When I run vmware, it appears to start normally. However, when I try to open a previously created image (from a different machine), everything is fine until I hit browse, which causes a screen to pop up that syas "The folder contents could not be displayed VFS error: Invlalid paramteres." and the following shows up on the command line:

The advice is to add

to the apt sources. (replacing cz as required for several other servers of choice). I tried this (using several different servers) from within Ubuntu Software Centre, but the usb_modeswitch never appeared. In fact (oddly) the source never appeared in the list! (Although I did have a look in the etc/apt/sources.list and it had added a line each time - there were several - I'd tried quite a few!!!) I did try downloading it but when it starts gdebi to install, a message pops up saying it is available (and better supported!) in a software channel.
I searched round a bit and found another reference to the package at

This time the sources were totally different and the apt line recommended was
deb
When I add this it does add the line to the list of sources, but sadly I still cannot see usb_modeswitch after Software Centre has updated. In fact the number of packages available seems to go down from 2186 to 2179!
I suppose I could force the debian package to install, but I don't see why I can't get it to appear in Software Centre!
I should perhaps add that I have added other sources using the "apt sources" and that worked OK so I know I am doing the right thing.
I have been looking at the docs in the KDE help centre, but I prefer to store some reading on paper to refer to when away from the computer. So. I don't seem to be able to print from the KDE Help Center, since it's greyed out. Anyone know how to somehow get the docbook files out to my printer instead?
