General :: At Command Doesn't Start Firefox
May 18, 2011
why firefox is not started if I use scheduler command 'at'. I can start firefox from terminal. But when I use 'at hours:min' it doesn't start. I tried 'firefox &' but it doesn't start too. If instead of 'firefox' I use 'mv fileName1 fileName2' the file is renamed as expected.
Code: at now
warning: commands will be executed using /bin/sh
at> firefox &
at> <EOT> (it works with other commands)

this morning I got a bad surprise: Firefox doesn't start upon my click on its icon.
Tried to uninstall and reinstall Firefox.... Even its icon disappeared from menus after reinstallation (no way to see it in the menu editor). I tried to start it from command line:
code
firefox %u
and got this reply from Ubuntu:
GLib-WARNING **: g_set_prgname() called multiple times
I am using Chrome now but I had some useful add-ons on Firefox and wouldn't like to loose them...

I installed CentOS 5.3 without major problems, and customized the installation to my heart's content, but I still do not have flash plugin active when I first open firefox. I have to close the first firefox window and from the second instance of firefox, the flash plugin works without any problem.
Here is my setup:
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.0.10) Gecko/2009042718 CentOS/3.0.10-1.el5.centos Firefox/3.0.10
Kernel: 2.6.18-128.1.10.el5.centos.plus, x86_64.

i am wanting to use Firefox to connect to my smb shares. However, i keep getting this error message: Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocol (smb) isn't associated with any program. My client configuration is as follows: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-GB; rv:1.9.1.8pre) Gecko/20100106 Ubuntu/9.10 (karmic) Shiretoko/3.5.8preI tried the instructions below to try and fix the problem with no success: Quote: From [URL]
Linux with Firefox In order to connect to a network share directly from you browser under Linux, you must configure Firefox to handle URL's starting with "smb://". This is done by typing "about:config" in the address line and hitting return. After that you must right-click the list of settings and choose "New -> Boolean" as shown below.
As name you must type: "network.protocol-handler.external.smb" with a value of "true". After that you must do the same thing over again, but this time choose "New -> String", type the name: "network.protocol-handler.app.smb" with a value of the path to the application you wish to use for browsing network shares. If you use KDE, this will typically be "/usr/bin/konqueror".

I have been given an Acer 1 ZG5, All I know about it is that It's running Linux with Gnome on top. The Issue I have is that it will not start the Browser (Firefox). If I click the Browser icon on the screenm the cursor shows the spinning ball, then nothing. I try and kick it off again and I get a message to say a browser is already running, shutdown program or restart to continue.
Just tried it again, with Right Click and selecting Run and now I've got Failed to Start default web browser. Input/Output Error. It's been 15 years since I last used Linux in anger and we didn't have all this WYSIWYG stuff way back, so any pointers would be appreciated. BTY Network both wired and wireless, fine

I just installed KDE under Arch Linux. Problem is, nothing is starting up right with it - no window manager, no panels, nothing. All I get is a small terminal window in the bottom right corner of the screen, which I'm assuming is konsole. From that single window I can do things like start kwin or launch programs whose names I happen to know (like chromium or firefox), but I don't have a panel for starting programs or switching between programs. Even Alt+F2 doesn't bring up the normal dialog.
It doesn't matter whether I start kdm through inittab or manually by typing # /etc/rc.d/kdm start. KDM looks great, but once I log in as my normal user I just get a console window with no decoration. Is there a startup script for KDE somewhere that needs to run, and usually has a bunch of programs by default - like a window manager, panels, widgets, and all the normal background programs that run in an ordinary GUI? If so, can someone show me the default script so I can work from there with a window manager, decorator, launchers, etc.?

How can I have multiple independent instances of Mozilla Firefox 3.5 on the same X server, but started from different user accounts (consequently, different profiles)?
Limited success was only with Xephyr :1, DISPLAY=:1 /usr/local/bin/firefox, but Xephyr has no Cygwin/X's "rootless" mode so it's not comfortable (see other question).
The idea is to have one Firefox instance for various "Serious Business" things and the other for regular browsing with dozens of add-ons securely isolated.

How do I figure out what's wrong? I downloaded the Firefox update from [URL] and installed it with the command
Code: su -c "upgradepkg mozilla-firefox-3.6.4-x86_64-1_slack13.0.txz" The result was as follows:

I've used this approach to install Firefox 3.0.1 on my stock EEE PC, which has worked very well. I've since downloaded and installed version 3.6.12 for Linux, and I can start it up through the terminal with the command ~/firefox/firefox However, I can't start up 3.6.12 using the desktop icon; instead, it reverts back to version 3.0.1. How can I get the desktop icon to start 3.6.12?

In an attempt to set up wireless so I could connect to the university network, which I think I probably should have just downloaded network manager or something but I didn't, I tried to put things in /etc/conf.d/net and some other places and I am afraid I'm not sure exactly what (and I have learned my lesson! I will pay attention to what I am doing so I can undo it next time I mess around with stuff!)
Anyway, the long and the short of it is now, when the computer is starting up and its doing the init stuff net.lo doesn't start. Later try and start net.lo or net.eth0 you get told "not enough arguments"

What could be the reason?

I did a clean install of Ubuntu 11.04 64bit and the start up time is abnormally slow. If I start up the computer and don't press anything, the start up time is 30 minutes but it usually doesn't start up at all. It just boots into a purple screen, no splash, then it sits there and the computer doesn't have any loading lights flashing.
I had a similar problem with 10.10, but I assumed it would go away when I did a clean install of 11.04.
I can't get a read out of what's going wrong because when I press Esc it doesn't display anything, though weirdly it can sometimes get the start up process moving. I have also found that pressing enter really fast can sometimes help and something that seems completely oxymoronic, if I press the power button while it's starting up that can make it work, but nothing works every time.

I'm configuring a new Centos 5.5 server in replacement of an old W2K server. The topology of our network is simple : one file/dhcp/dns relay server and workstations (PC's and some MAC's) plus network printers and scanners. All the workstations have dynamic IP addresses (easier because a lot of 'dynamic' changes : new persons with their own laptop, ...) and the server and printers/scanners have fixed IP addresses.I edited the dhcpd.conf (see here underneath), I have the file dhcpd.leases but it doesn't start !

In Windows, if I have a console window open, type winmine, and press enter, Minesweeper will appear, completely separate from the cmd program. The Minesweeper instance is not tied to the command prompt in any way that I know of, with the exception of Minesweeper's parent being set to that instance of the command prompt. It's different in Linux, however.
In Linux, if I have a console window open, type emacs and press enter, Emacs will open, but it seems tied to the command line. Specifically, it appears that I can't use the command line anymore until that instance of Emacs is closed. Is there a way to replicate the Windows behavior in Linux?
