my Dell OptiPlex 990 running Ubuntu 10.10 64bit is freezing irregulary after using firefox.The screen and the keyboard are frozen, all i can do is moving the mouse cursor, but i can't click at anything.The System monitor applet didn't show anything before the crash. I couldn't find the logs for the time before the freeze startetd.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've really borked up my Gimp. I'm running 10.04 64-bit and had at some point installed gimp but don't recall how or where I got it from. The strange part is that neither Synaptic or Ubuntu Software Center showed it as being installed.
Anyway, it started misbehaving (locking up) so I figured I'd uninstall and reinstall. That's when I discovered that the system didn't show it as being installed at all. Needless to say, I couldn't uninstall it so I decided to just reinstall over the top through Ubuntu Software Center. The installation seemed to complete normally but when I tried running it I got an error stating that there was a version mismatch for libgimp and suggesting that maybe I had gimp installed in both /usr and /usr/local. Not knowing what else to do, I uninstalled via Ubuntu Software Center and then removed all gimp related files from both /usr and /usr/local. Lastly, I reinstalled again via the Software Center.
Now when I try to launch gimp I get a box in the panel's Window List titled "Starting Gimp Image Editor" but shortly thereafter it disappears and I'm back to the desktop. I've even tried it all over again but utilizing Synaptic for the final install (as well as apt-get) with the same result - it tries to load and then... nothing. I must have deleted something essential when rooting around in /usr and /usr/local that is not replaced by reinstalling gimp but I have no idea what or where. So now what do I do? I really need gimp installed on this machine. I do have a full system backup but it's a couple of weeks old and I don't want to lose all of the changes that I've made to the system since then.
i have recently installed ubntu 9.10 and u wanted to dual boot it with xp that i already got installed i have installed it and than i didnt know how to get two my windows back becuse the grub menu didnt show and it had bugs . so i formted the ubunttu partion (to ntfs) with the live cd of it and now wiil now boot windows it showes me "grub recovery>" commend line somthing like that what to do to boot my windows back i am now with the live cd of ubuntu wrting you this.

I have a netgear wg11v2 wirless card and when i try typing in airmon-ng no wireless cards show up. I made sure the my wireless card was connected to VMware but for some reason it does not show up. I've look around on many post and still have not found a solution I downloaded rtl8187_linux_26.1010.0622.2006 but not sure how to or where to install it or if I really even need it please someone been at this for about two weeks.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have gotten Debian working quite well on my Sony Vaio laptop for the past 6 months or so, and it's a very rewarding experience. I however have a small amount of problems that I could not find the answer to through googling or reading Debian instructions.
1) I have an Atheros-based wireless chipset in my laptop that didn't work with the default wireless drivers in Debian. So I replaced them with madwifi drivers and it works great now. However, every time I restart the computer, it defaults back to 1mb/s wireless speed; making me go into root terminal and change the speed with "iwconfig ath0 rate 54M". Obviously this gets a little bit annoying to enter every time, so I am looking for a way to make it automatic. I have looked on Google and gotten some hits but none of them have been successful.
2) Whenever I put the computer on stand-by then return, the wifi refuses to connect. Networkmanager tries to connect then crashes. I have found no hits on this issue with my configuration. Very odd.
I use FC9. Yesterday after system update I turned of the computer, but today when it booted the wireless didn't work, ndiswrapper device wlan0:1 does not seem to be present, delaying initialization.I have removed and again installed the wireless driver and looks like it is ok,

i installed suse (KDE) on my old notebook and now I'm trying to get the wlan to connect to our router and can't figure out how to get it to work. My card seems to work, the network manager even finds the router, but i just cant get a connection. I followed the steps of the "Getting Your Wireless to Work" thread and these are the results:

I am a linux newbie, I spent more than 3 days trying to set up the drivers for my Intersil Prism 2 Wi-Fi adapter on CentOS 5.5. While trying to Make the driver source I receive errors of missing libraries. Is the hostap driver included in the Centos Kernel? I tried with insmod hostap but it didn't work..? Is there a kernel patch with the hostap drivers? I will be glad if someone can give me ideas or directions for setting up the driver properly.

My wireless card doesn't have linux drivers installed. I found the correct drivers, but I am unsure of the correct way to install them in Windows so they work in Ubuntu. I am currently dual booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu.

I configured it to use IMAP to access our exchange 2010 server front end on a LAN connection. Our webmail connection is segregated behind Forefront, so it was not connecting/authing that way. Even though smartphones have no problem. (sidenote, is there an activesync linux mail client ?)
I have many root folders and several folders underneath my inbox. total mailsize in inbox is 3.5 GB without subfolders. The sent is likewise as large. And is likewise empty.

In order to try debian 6, I started by using debian 6 live, I burnt the following file ((debian-live-6.0.0-i386-kde-desktop.img ) as iso via cdbernerxp (from windosw xp), I tried to use with my old pc pentium 4, 512 mb ram,120 gb of hard dsk space, but it didn't start, it just stuck at menu (live, failsafe etc...).

View 5 Replies View RelatedI installed Fedora 10 few days back in my laptop (dell inspiron15) and i had problems with wireless connection and webcam. I have a WLAN (UTSTARCOM) Had no problems connecting to net using lan cable.But wireless was a problem.I tried changing the settings in the Network Connection window using the settings wit my ISP. Still no luck. And with my webcam like i updated wit "yum update". and i got some software application named "digikam" but tat did not detect either my lap webcam or the usb (logitech) webcam that i had.
Sorry that i could not give more details about Wireless Driver. I also would request to know the command that i should use to actually know what driver is in my laptop and also for the video driver.
So decided to try a fresh install as ubuntu was having issues every update for me. Regardless i can't seem to get my wireless working and i'd really appreciate some help as i have no idea what i'm doing.
Using a hp pavilion dv5 1235dx.So my network card does show up it's a broadcom 4312 pci id 4315.Installed the b43 & wl drivers but it didn't help. The hardware switch is stuck at orange but in ubuntu it would function despite this(sometimes ).
So it snatched up this old Dell Inspiron 5100 with a WN511B wifi card. When I plug the card into the slot nothing happens and no wireless connections show up. Can someone walk me through on getting the wifi card to work?

I've read the sticky post about getting my wireless to work. Here's what I know:
Wireless LAN doesn't show up in my hardware list. But the wireless usb adapter I have (D-Link DWA-160) does show up under USB devices, with the following UDI info:

When I look at the boot.msg log I see nothing about a firmware failing to load. Does that mean I already have it?
When I try the /usr/sbin/iwconfig command I get:
lo no wireless extensions

When I try the /usr/sbin/iwlist scan command I get:
lo Interface doesn't support scanning.
eth0 Interface doesn't support scanning.
There's a page (ar9170 - Linux Wireless) where I can supposedly download the ar9170.fw firmware that supports this device. But when I try to download it it doesn't show up in the /lib/firmware directory and I don't know why.
The system sees the USB adapter, but it doesn't appear to be working. Do I need the firmware? And if so, how do I download it-

It uses build in wireless but I just tried to connect using an ethernet cable and nothing happened. Still couldn't get on the internet. My wireless monitor won't even show up on the panel and I've tried to readd it and it doesn't work. I have no need for a computer without internet.

I run 9.10 desktop i386 or w/e and I have a wireless connection. The network does not show up when I go the network manager to select a network. No networks show up and all it lets me do is create a new network connection which I have no idea how to do. I think it might have to do with my device recognition, but the network is fine it is just Ubuntu.
View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter cleaning up my son's Vista desktop and backing it up, I installed 11.04 alongside Vista.
Issue #1:
Using the Ubuntu Requirements Guide, which says a minimum of 5GB is needed, I went ahead and allocated 15GB, to be safe and allow for future growth. But when it boots, I get this message:
This Computer has only 244.6 MB of disk space remaining
Ubuntu confirms that the installation took up 13+GB of space. Why is this, and how do I correct it? I would be fine with deleting the partition and starting over, but do not want to damage his Vista installation.
I don't understand why these space requirements aren't explained better or even consistent between different official Ubuntu sources. Here's one for 11.04 that specifies that "You must have at least 44MB of memory and 500MB of hard disk space to perform a normal installation." Now, 'normal installation' implies to me that everything is installed, so I don't get it.
Issue #2:
When I turn on the computer or reboot, I get this floating box:

This does not disappear until it has booted Ubuntu, so I do not get any menu to choose between Ubuntu and Vista. Why is this and what's the fix?
Issue #3:
When I plug in his USB Wireless device, the device does not light up, there is no popup box in Ubuntu, and the device does not show up in the Wireless Settings box. How do I get Ubuntu to see this device (or any newly plugged in device) so that it can look for the appropriate driver?
I am having problems with with a Satellite Pro L500 and FC13. The laptop has a Realtek RTL8192SE wireless adapter, which runs under Win 7 that it came with, but refuses to show itself under FC13.

I looked on the web and this forum for clues and someone suggested installing kmod-ndiswrapper. So I installed the yum rpm-fusion repository and an ndiswrapper for my kernel ------ and nothing's changed.

I've been a Fedora Core bunny since FC3 but I've only recently discovered the wonders of wireless networking and this one has me stumped. I don't fancy being reduced to Windoze when I work from home!
