What is the correct way to copy a file or directory to another directory? In the past I was able to use press the mouse left and right button, it didn't work all the time hard to press the two buttons at the same time. With the Fedora 14 it does not work at all.

2. Pick the first file from every sub and copy that to the main directory and also rename that file to the same name as the subdirectory's name

I'd like to copy a file, say widgets/water.txt, to all subfolders in the folder widgets using a single command. So if the folder widgets has 10 subfolders like widgets/blue, widgets/green, etc. I'd like to copy water.txt to all of them with one command.

However these don't seem to work. The latter gives 'cp: omitting directory' errors.
I have the following content on the source directory:
source/foo.txt
source/bar/another_file.txt
source/bar2/and_another.txt
I want copy those files to a destination directory which, after copy, shall look like this:
destination/foo.txt
destination/another_file.txt
destination/and_another.txt

Anyone have any ideas what he's talking about? Can I copy a file and rename it at the same time while copying it to the same exact directory again? Now sure what the two lines things means either. I downloaded a mouse theme form gnome look and installed it in the themes. But it has not appeared in the pointer themes section in custimation even though it said that it is installed correctly.When I drag the file to install it again it says something along the lines of it cannot copy a directory over a directory.Where can I find where the mouse/pointer theme is located and delete it. I have searched filesystem, google and these forums and not had any luck yet.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI want to copy all files with the name XYZ* into one folder. The problem is that the files are in different subfolders and that not even the depth of the folder structure is the same for all files. Luckily, at least each file has a unique name.
Of course, I thought about the cp command but I guess the depth of the folder structure needs to be the same for this to work.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have ubuntu 9.10 & windows 7 on my laptop. I have one 40GB Primary partition (C & 60 GB logical partition on my windows. I have given another 20GB for ubuntu.
I hibernated my windows7 & then started ubuntu 9.10. Then I copied a folder containing some PDF files from my ubuntu to that 60GB (D on windows. Then I rebooted the machine & choose windows from GRUB. the windows came up from hibernation but nowhere I was able to see that folder which I copied.
Since ubuntu supports (understands) NTFS file system it means when I copied that folder it should have updated the Directory Tree of NTFS on that 60GB (D but that folder is not shown.
When I restart the windows the folder appears (ofcourse because windows checks the file system again for consistency while in hibernation it does not).
Why do I always need to write "su" then my password to extract or copy any file in fedora 11. How to configure so that I always be in my root directory.

When I copied in nautilus file explorer and paste into a terminal or text editor, I got the exact path (eg. /home/user/abc.txt), but when coming the Ubuntu 10.04, it added some "file://" prefix to the actual path (eg. file:///home/user/abc.txt), and I always had to manually delete the "file://" prefix. I don't see clearly that we need to place "file://" in front of the actual path (maybe just in the case we want to put the path in an Internet browser?). Wish this reversed back.

More details: I have to import a repository from GIT to Perforce. I want that all Perforce depot files are Read-Only (that is how Perforce was designed), while all other files that were derived/copied from depot files are writable. Currently if a Makefile tries to copy a Read-Only file then the derived file will also be Read-only. This leads to build-errors when cp tries to overwrite Read-Only file second time. Of course the --force is a workaround here but then the derived file is also Read-Only. Also I do not want to mess with "chmod" after each "cp" command - I will do that only as the last resort.

So, in that configuration file I input the IP addresses of the tunneled interfaces. Both IPs are static in the tunnel.
Then, I've heard somewhere that I can assign a dynamic configuration IP for the client. I do this registering a range.
Well, when I tried to change static IP to dynamic IP (changing '192.168.0.2' to '192.168.0.0/24') in the configuration file, the OpenVPN didn't work.
Obviously I don't know what I'm doing, and I really, don't believe that simply changing the IP will make it work, but I tried.
I hope I explained my problem as well.

In client I execute the 'openvpn' without the '--daemon' parameter.Then I want that my client uses a IP in a range (192.168.0.0/24, for example), instead of a static IP (192.168.0.2).I also thought to use a DHCP server, but I'm not sure that will work.
I restarted a server yesterday for the first time in 2 years, but a shell script that send out an email every night via a mutt command line didn't work last night.
I don't know anything about mutt. do i have to start something in order for it to be able to work? is there a log i can look at to see what did or didn't happen making it not work?

I am in the process of learning the ins and outs of NFS so i can mount a NFS directory and transfer my podcasts from server to player. For now i am using scp to transfer podcasts from server to desktop then to player. The problem is the path to the directory of one of the podcasts is /home/user/gpodder-downloads/The BILL&TIMMY Show Podcast.
whenever i try and run my scp command it fails because it thinks that TIMMY is a script i want to run in the background. I have tried to back-slash escape the character, i've tried single quoting and double quoting the character and i still get the same problem. as it sits now i have to move all podcasts to another directory and then transfer them to my desktop...but i would like to transfer the podcasts without un-necessary steps.
I moved to Mac OS X recently and bumped into the "feature" of Mac where copying files from an external drive resets the file modification/update date/timestamp to the current date (which Windows does not), causing a disaster for my 10+ years of backup work files where date is important. So, before I learned how to avoid that (e.g. using the -p "preserve" flag in the "cp" copy command) I have in the meantime added to my new Mac hard drive many more files as well as updating existing old files.

I would like to copy the contents of a directory into another. I don't want to copy the directory and all files and directories under it, but just the contents of the directory just as if it were a regular file. Doing cp -r target dest copies the directory and the entire hierarchy rooted in it. I get error if I do not include the -r option. (I am calling cp from within a C program.)

Basically, I'm trying write a script to copy 200 GB of files over a network to a new server, and I'd like to do it by generating a list with the find command. That way, I can migrate large chunks of the files over the course of a week, and on the day of the migration generate a new list of files that changed in the last week and then copy just the chagned files over minimizing the down time. However, the list will contain directories that I can't just use the 'cp' command on because it will copy all the contents of the directory.
I installed a new music application. It reads covers.jpg as the cover of the album, however, my covers files where named album. I dont want to rename, I want to make a copy of album.jpg and if possible as well rename it to covers.jpg. The file has to be in the same folder that it currently is. I have looked around to see how I can do this but have not been able to.
