General :: Windows Syslog Daemon Disabled / Only Client Is Active
May 20, 2010
I set up rsyslog for the first time on my sole Linux server (Debian Lenny), and I am using one PC to test it over the next few days. I currently have the Windows syslog daemon disabled so only the client is active. Before I recommend using it to collect logs from our production servers, has anyone heard of or had any problems with Syslog for Windows (URL...) running on XP/2003/etc? From what I've read is that since it sends the data over the network using UDP instead of TCP or an NFS mount, there should be no potential for problems.

I have a 60GB partition with / and home on it. I logged on yesterday and it gave me a warning saying that I had only 1.9 GB of disk space left. I ignored it for a day and assumed that i had too many videos and pics. But the next day i had not added any files or downloaded any software but i had 0B left. I used the disk usage analyser and found that 33GBs came from /var/log. It was from two log files. syslog and daemon.log 16.5GB each!! I opened them up and i found that this line of text was repeated hnundreds of thousands of times.
Code:
Jul 22 19:32:36 aulenback-desktop ntfs-3g[5315]: Failed to decompress file: Value too large for defined data type

If i were to build an sftp client which launched with logon details, and could then controlled by sending commands to that daemon; would that be ideal way to create an sftp client with disposable credentials?

The config file is ambiguous, and keeps getting overwritten when you restart the daemon in Debian, anyway.
In /etc/transmission-daemon/settings.json, there are these options:
rpc-username
rpc-password
proxy-auth-username
proxy-auth-password
Every time I restart the daemon with:
/etc/init.d/transmission-daemon restart
It overwrites rpc-password, and the password it prints doesn't work anyway.
Does anyone know how to set the password properly? I don't want to disable it.

I've added httpd to runlevels 2-5 using chkconfig, and also double checked it using ntsysv, but it still won't run on startup, even though it works just fine when started manually (using "sudo service httpd start").The results of "chkconfig --list httpd" show it is on for levels 2-5, and I've confirmed the current runlevel to be 3. I've found no errors in the logs (neither Apache's nor the system's), but maybe I'm looking at them wrong...My machine is a VPS (on VMWare) running CentOS 5.5 32bit. For additional information, see the output of getinfo.sh: http://pastebin.centos.org/35570I would greatly appreciate help on this, as it is delaying our NGO from moving servers.

I was thinking about getting a kiosk or two I thought since monitors are facing potential customers and we'll be behind a table I'd be hard to see if something gone wrong/needs our attention. How might I capture all the machines screen on my own? I'd need some kind of daemon in the background. I may have VMs so I'd either need it to work on the OS capturing what is shown in the VM or have it installed on each VM. My machine would likely be windows. I don't need to take over and control the screen but that may be nice since I wouldn't need to walk around to fix something.

I want to use FTP client (for example ncftp) to connect in active mode. I have firewall (iptables) on my laptop and most of time I am behind rooter. With outgoing packets and with passive mode all is working fine. But some sites accept only active mode.I could open some port range in firewall and in rooter for active data packets, but I don't know how to solve security issues. So how should I correctly manage active ftp connection?
How can I set data port range when opening active connection with ncftp (or maybe another ftp client)? How can I limit that incoming connections to that ports range is accepted only by ncftp or else dropped?

I want to use LDAP on SUSE 10 to authorize the use of certain objects within IBM's MQ Series via the setmqaut command. I do not want to authenticate these users to the Linux server itself via LDAP. Users that actually log onto the Linux server will be authenticated through a product from Quest formly known as VAS. My question is, does LDAP require the use of PAM or can I utilize the facilities within LDAP to communicate with a Windows Active Directory so that I can authorize the use of MQ Series objects and not authenticate actual users that would log onto the server.

(This was posted at the end of another thread, where it probably didn't belong, so reposting here)I have Active Directory set up on one machine (and I can't really adjust the settings very much) and Ubuntu Server 10.04, which I would like to use as a client.I followed the directions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LD...Authentication, but when I get to
Code:
getent passwd
I don't see anything from the LDAP, and ssh'ing into the box from an LDAP/AD username certainly doesn't work.
In addition, I've attempted to use Webmin's LDAP Configuration module to configure it. I can connect to the server and can browse it with the LDAP browser with my settings, but the Webmin package doesn't recognize the users (which are organized in one of four Organizational Units (OUs) within the OU that I have as my Search Base) as users,

Quote:
# This is the main Samba configuration file. You should read the
# smb.conf(5) manual page in order to understand the options listed
# here. Samba has a huge number of configurable options (perhaps too
# many!) most of which are not shown in this example

I've worked exclusively in Windows. I can handle that.I've worked exclusively in DOS (a long time ago!). I can handle that.I've worked exclusively in Unix.I can handle that.Right now, I am developing a command-line (python) application on a Windows machine, testing it in a DOS box (i.e. Windows' Command prompt), and then deploying it to Linux, and running it with PuTTY.
I cannot handle that. My productivity drops dramatically when CTRL-C cuts in one window (Windows) and kills the process in another (DOS, Linux). My productivity drops dramatically when Enter copies the selection in one window (DOS), and deletes the selection in another (Windows), and runs the current half-edited command in the third (PuTTY).My productivity drops dramatically when I cannot hit Undo, Home or End.The Solution I am Seeking
An SSH/Bash command-line client that runs on Windows and, to the extent possible, uses all the standard Windows shortcuts (Cut, Copy, Paste, Undo, Home, End, Insert, Shift-Arrows, etc.) work on a bash command line. Bonus points if it puts the cursor between letters, rather than on them.Plus, an equivalent DOS command-line drop-in that runs on Windows, and provides the same interface.need to be special buttons to actually transfer CTRL codes (like CTRL-C) through in the cases I need them.I suspect the SSH client will need to be specific to a shell (so it knows when it is at the command prompt, and when it is inside a running app.)I know there are many SSH clients, but I am looking for advice for a particular need.PuTTY feels like an escape route for Unix programmers stuck on Windows. I am the opposite. Can anyone recommend one (or maybe a combination of an SSH client and an Command-Line replacement)?
Update: After seeing the early answers here, I turned my requirements into a blog article, which may give more background in the direction I am looking.

Until today I have never encountered problems taking over my old Windows-machine. But now it doesn't work anymore... Could it be that something changed with an update of my Ubuntu (10.04) which caused this?
The Windows machine does not update or change, and I cannot imagine that I changed something myself at that machine...
I can still reach it using "smb://192.168.1.33/"
But when I try Remotedesktop Client with that IP it gives the message;
Error (grdesktop)
Autoselected keyboard map en-us
ERROR: 192.168.1.33: unable to connect
When I try using Terminal Server Client (I read in another thread that could solve the problem) I get the same response...
Where can I find out what the problem is?

Since last few weeks i am struggling to setup printer connected to print server.
Here is the setup that i have:
I have Red Hat Linux machine from which i want to issue print jobs.
I have Windows Print Server having multiple printers connected to it.
I am able to print jobs from Windows client to any of these printers. But i am not able to print from Red Hat Linux. (i have verified that i can print using smbclient utility, but based on my reading, CUPS API could be used from application to discover, print and issue print jobs.)
I am not able to get the correct configuration for setting up CUPS client.

The scenario is I have a Windows Server 2003 Domain Controller which runs ADUC. I have created some security groups which I would like to apply to my network shares. The problem is, the majority of my network shares are based on Open Suse machines which, although are part of the domain, when trying to configure the shares using SMB, do not allow me to select the Active Directory groups. Any solution which will allow me to use ADUC security groups?
