Ubuntu Servers :: Running Php Files Without Setting Read / Write Permission?

Jun 26, 2010

On an Apache2 server someone else setup, I have a folder with drwx--x--x permission and the php file can still write in the folder. But on my own setup, I need to set the same folder to drwx--x-wx. Inside the folder, I have a index.php that runs just by setting rwx--x--x but on my own setup, I need to allow read permission for others/group before it can run: rwxr-xr-x (or else I get a blank page). I tried changing the folder and files to root but it's the same.

Ubuntu Servers :: Cannot Write To Samba Shares From Mac?

Nov 5, 2010

This is (I suspect) a Mac OS issue but they've given no help (or replies!) on Mac forums so I'll ask here.I've just got a Mac and I can connect to shares on my Ubuntu (10.04) server, read files and create directories but I cannot write. I get this error:"The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items."I can connect from the command line with smbclinet and write fine. I have tried several different users on both the Mac (cannot write) and Ubuntu clients (can write).Is this something to do with the ._filename files that finder creates? Or is there something wrong with the way I've set up my server? This is the first time I've used it with a Mac client.

Ubuntu Servers :: Samba Users Able To Browse Folders With No Permission

Feb 11, 2011

I've set up smbd 3.4.7 on 10.04x64 LTS server. I've set up a couple shares and I'm having problems blocking access to certain directories using native file permissions. There is one directory that has folders for each sales rep to store their current list of quoted clients, I only want sales people to be able to browse the directories owned by themselves. Everything seems to be set up correctly in terms of user groups and permissions on the filesystem.

Below is marina, a sales rep, and brian, a super user of sorts.
id marina:
Code:
uid=1011(marina) gid=1006(office) groups=1006(office),1005(sales)
id nick:
Code:
uid=1000(brian) gid=1006(office) groups=1006(office),118(admin),1001(full),1002(processing),1003(management),1004(it),1005(sales)

Below is the directory with all the sales reps folders.
ls -la:
Code:
total 60
drwxrwxr-x 15 root it 4096 2011-02-10 20:06 .
drwxr-x--- 9 root office 4096 2010-11-19 12:40 ..
drwxrwx--- 13 katya full 4096 2010-12-07 12:36 Katya
drwxrwx--- 18 lana full 4096 2011-02-08 17:09 Lana
drwxrwx--- 23 marina full 4096 2011-02-10 18:09 Marina
drwxrwx--- 4 mike full 4096 2011-02-01 12:42 Mike

With this setup marina only be able to browse her folder, but she can browse all folders and has full write access to all folders. This leads me to believe something is up with the smbd.conf file, which is below.

Code:
[global]
workgroup = COMTREAD
null passwords = no
server string = Root Server
dns proxy = no
log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m
max log size = 1000
syslog = 0 .....

In this case the valid users directive would not work cause I am not making a share for each user. I had this on other shares like the db2 share. My windows box lagged heavily when I tried to access that share with an invalid user. How to deny users the ability to modify permissions I would also like to do that.

Ubuntu Servers :: Write Acces In Win7 Folder Via Samba?

Nov 22, 2010

Not sure if this is the correct forum for this but I run ubuntu 10.04 server in virtualbox, and have samba running. I can see the files and read them in win7, but I want write access aswell!

I need to do this in terminal only, and Im not that well versed in Linux or the terminal. Anyways here is my smb.conf:

[global]
security = share
workgroup = myworkgroupname
load printers = no

[Code]...

Since "read only = no" I think i should have write permissions... and since I can read the files Im guessing the smb.conf is the problem?

Fedora Servers :: Samba Messages In Syslog - Allow Logging To The Standard Samba Logfiles

Mar 18, 2010

I wish to prevent the samba messages (mainly nmbd and winbindd) from appearing in the system log (/var/log/messages). I want to allow samba logging to the standard samba logfiles, but prevent the syslog getting clogged up by samba. I added syslog = 0 to smb.conf and reloaded the config but the messages were still appearing. I also tried the following (and restarted the syslog via /sbin/service syslog restart) # Suppress messages from samba.

nmbd.* /dev/null
smbd.* /dev/null
winbindd.* /dev/null

For interests sake the messages I'm getting are below (I'm not concerned about the messages themselves, I can chase them up at my leisure via the samba logs) Mar 18 09:58:29 SERVER nmbd[3808]: query_name_response: Multiple (2) responses received for a query on subnet xx.yy.z.zz for name DOMAIN<1d>. Fedora Networking :: Samba Not Working On 15 - Read / Write Privileges

Jun 19, 2011

i have a windows xp machine with filesharing enabled and the shares set up and ready to go i have a laptop on which i did a fresh install of fedora 15 with samba and all the necessary packages to make the fedora machine a samba client to the windows machine.

my problem is that when i go into nautilus and click on the network tab it shows nothing not one single computer...the fedora machine doesnt even show up.....i have done all the tests i can think of and confirmed that the smb service is running, the nmb service is running, samba is allowed thru the firewall and all the computers are in the same workgroup..yet neither one can see each other even more frustrating is when i go to mount a windows share thru the terminal it shows a successful mount (as i type in the command hit enter and recieve no errors) BUT when i go into the mount directory and open the new directory i made for the samba share it shows nothing there not even when i go into the windows machine and add a file to the shared folder...PLUS for some strange reason the /mnt directory already had two empty files called "home" and "boot" already in it i have no clue what thats about but ok, then on the windows side i go into "network places" and click on "show workgroup computers" and the windows machine will show up but not the fedora machine.

these are the commands i have used to install and get samba working- "yum install samba system-config-samba samba-client cifs-utils" "service smb start" anyway until i can figure this out i have decided to start from scratch and erase samba from the machine completely and i am hoping that maybe some one can read all this and come up with some ideas...maybe there is just something i forgot when i was setting this up yesterday its possible i just went to fast and skipped a step again all i want is the fedora 15 machine to just be a samba client with read/write priviledeges

Fedora Networking :: F14 Samba Server With Slow Write Speed

Aug 4, 2011

I had a F14 samba server working flawlessly now for a quite time. Unexpectedly about a month ago the write speed slowed down around 64kbit/s and that's really slow. I haven't changed any configs, only updated the server. I've troubleshooted this from many angles:
-It is not a network issue because sftp writes are good.
-It is not a RAID1 issue because write speed from another directory (locally) are good.
So basically samba is the only thing left.

Here's example from smb.conf:
[MyShare]
comment = My share
path = /mnt/RAID_share
writeable = yes
browseable = yes
writelist = +smbuser

Here's a snip from logs today:
[2011/08/04 09:04:27.509273, 1] smbd/server.c:267(remove_child_pid)
Scheduled cleanup of brl and lock database after unclean shutdown
[2011/08/04 09:04:47.526336, 1] smbd/server.c:240(cleanup_timeout_fn)
Cleaning up brl and lock database after unclean shutdown
[2011/08/04 09:17:57.634660, 1] smbd/server.c:267(remove_child_pid)
Scheduled cleanup of brl and lock database after unclean shutdown
[2011/08/04 09:18:17.635196, 1] smbd/server.c:240(cleanup_timeout_fn)
Cleaning up brl and lock database after unclean shutdown .....

There's a restart that is not software related.
