I am having an issue with Windows 7 changing the boot order everytime I start up.I have 4 partitions:bootlinuxwindows.Grub is installed on the boot, and boots up both operating systems fine, however when I boot to Windows the bootable partition is changed to Windows and the MBR is rewritten.How do I stop this? Its rather annoying to have to boot, chroot and fix this problem everytime.

It originally comes with Windows 7 installed on it.Everything works nice however every time i boot into Windows7 the grub menu doesn't work any more. i can't boot into windows or ubuntu any more. After consulting forum posts here and elsewhere, I have tried to alter my grub boot order by editing my menu.lst file found in /boot/grub. I don't seem to be having any luck. Changing the default [value] doesn't seem to work, nor does the savedefault. Below is a copy of my file.

I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 from earlier versions. I have a dual boot system with Windows 7. Grub was set to boot Windows by default Things were working fine. I decided to upgrade to Grub2. It seemed like a good idea at the time. Now when booting up,the name at the top of the Grub menu is 1.98, which is Grub 2. When I run grub-install -v, it comes back grub-install (GNU GRUB 0.97) which is not Grub2. Now when I boot up, Ubuntu 10.04 is the default. I have to manually choose Windows if I want to use that system. I have been unable to change the boot order following instructions from this site. Any Way changing the boot order to make Windows 7 the default. I am using a Toshiba Satellite.

I am trying to streamline my boot screen/GRUB Menu. I know what I want it to look like (grub_wanted.jpg), and I think I know how to get it by uninstalling a couple of things, (synaptic.jpg). Now I have too many items on the screen, and it looks cluttered to me (grub.jpg).

Disk 0 (500GB): Windows Vista
Disk 1 (1TB): Windows 7
Disk 2 (160GB): Ubuntu
My boot disk is Disk 0. Currently when I turn on the PC, GRUB loads from Disk 0. I can then choose either Ubuntu or Windows Loader. If I choose Windows Loader (also located on Disk 0), I can choose to load Windows Vista or Windows 7. I like this setup, but I would like to move the loaders (exactly as they are) to Disk 1 so that I can format Disk 0.
A colleague of mine was studying at the University of Vienna and saw an application which was based on linux whereby other pc's booted from it and if on the server they had set it to force a clean install on that PC it would download and install a windows image. Does anyone know of the app or could point me in the direction of a similar app.
View 5 Replies View RelatedHaving a major issue with my laptop. I am unable to boot into my Vista installation.I am currently posting this through my Fedora 11 installation which I had already. If anyone is interested, the BSOD error is:

As far as I know, a '7B' BSOD is usually a hard disk error but I am 100% sure the HDD is fine as I can read and write from both Fedora and Knoppix without issue. Steps taken so far: Obviously, I have tried the usual steps of trying to start windows in safe mode, last good config, and all of the F8 options. When they failed, I used fedora to check for some solutions online (Mostly useless answers from MS) and I found one successful case when a person flashed his BIOS back to an earlier time. Unfortunately, I cant get the BIOS update I got from the Dell website to boot from a USB drive (Says invalid boot disc - the BIOS on it is in the .exe format which I can't use in linux) and I do not have a floppy drive on the laptop.
So, I put in my Dell drivers and utilities CD hoping that it would give me some option to update (Or roll back) the BIOS but there was no such option. However, it did give me a load of diagnostic options including repair options by symptom so went with the "Unable to boot from BIOS". Unfortunately, that didnt help me at all. So, I got my Vista installation disc (OEM supplied) and managed to get to the repair menu (Which I had among my F8 options anyway) but this also has the option to reinstall. Unfortunately, it states that "Upgrade is unavailable" and that a clean install is the only thing I can select (At the expense of my files and settings).
As for the repair options, the automatic recovery doesn't seem to find any errors, asks to reset and see if all is well (It isn't). For some reason, system restore doesn't detect any restore points. There are no windows memory errors detected and I have no backups. So, i'm left with a command prompt that, by default, is asking for a file in this folder: X:/WINDOWS/System32/ I have no idea where it is getting the X: drive from - I have C and D drives for windows only. The problem is this: I have a 320gb HDD splitted in 4 partitions. When I first installed Windows XP I formatted the HDD in 3 (Windows system partition, Media partition and another one I left for Linux). However Linux requires another partition for swap. Everything was just fine. One day Windows stopped working and I tried re-installing it. After the system was ready to start, Windows failed to boot with "NTLDR is missing" message. I tried to recover the Master boot record, even replaced NTLDR manually - nothing worked. I read that in order a HDD to be partitioned in more than 3 parts the so called "extended" partitions must be created. I think this may cause the problem but I don't want to wipe out everything (I have more than 100 GB of books most of which are not available anymore in the same locations I have downloaded them)

There seems to be only one X- or Y coordinate on the screen where I can pick the side of the window, it seems to be only one pixel wide. This makes it hard to get hold of the side to change the size of the window. Is there a way to enlarge this location to a few pixels so it is easier to point the mouse to the right location?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI previously had an install of Windows 7 on one drive, and an install of Fedora on the other hard drive. I have a partition on the second drive for GRUB, and the normal Windows bootloader partition on the first drive. I previously had it set up with EasyBCD to be able to chainload the bootloader on the second hard drive, however now with Windows 8 installed in addition to Windows 7 and Linux, it only shows the menu options for Windows (It only shows Windows 7/8 in the boot menu).
Is it still possible to boot Linux from the Windows bootloader?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to change some of the icons in my system. I first tried the GUI. This changed the icon in the start menu, on the panel, and on the desktop, but it doesn't change the icon in the left-hand corner of open windows or in the task bar in the panel. I then went in and did it manually by editing the .desktop files in /usr/share/applications. Same thing...the icons in Openbox windows are the old ones. My guess is that Openbox is looking elsewhere for icons, but I dont really know.

I've just rolled out about 60 ubuntu 10.04 desktops. All of them are joined to our windows domain using likewiseopen.
At the gnome login screen, the users have to click "other" and type in their windows username and password.
Is there any way to bypass this and just have the username displayed?
I installed ubuntu using wubi and then I tried installing grub 2 but it failed. I need a way to reinstall the mbr sp it will load the windows 7 loader from the first partition.

Few days ago windows got corrupt and I have to reinstall it. I put windows 7 now and as usual it erased grub. So to reinstall I put the fedora 12 installation CD on and followed some usual setup steps. When I got the command line I issued the command "grub-install /dev/sda" (sda not hda because It showed bunch of sda, sda1..) but surprisingly it said grub command not found. I remember doing it before while it worked fine.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have recently been trying to change the boot screen (not the Grub screen). I came across a way to change it, however it need to install a .deb file called Zorin Splash Screen Manager.
Zorin is currently unavailable for download, the website seems to be down, as well as the majority of the links I have found to it.
Is there a way to manually switch the default boot screen/animation to the custom ones I've installed? Or, if anyone has a link to the .deb file that would be great too.
I've edited /etc/fstab to auto-mount two partitions on a new disk drive that have been formatted as ext3, by appending the following two lines:
/dev/sdb1 /bak1 ext3 defaults 1 1
/dev/sdb2 /bak2 ext3 defaults 1 1
On reboot, the system complains there is some problem (I can't advise what the problem is, because the display scrolls up too fast to read!), and I'm left with a root command prompt.
Its a /etc/fstab problem, presumably. I've used vi to edit /etc/fstab to remove the two lines mentioned above, but on quit and save, I'm told I have a read-only file system!
1. How can I mount a read-write file system so I can edit /etc/fstab?
2. What's wrong with my two new entries in /etc/fstab? After formatting /dev/sdb1 and /dev/sdb2, I checked the they were mountable with # mount /dev/sdbn /bakn (n = 1, 2) before editing fstab.
