General :: Split A Directory Based On The Filename Prefix?

Mar 5, 2010

I have a very large directory with probably millions of small files in it. It's taking forever to run ls on the directory.

Is there an easy script that I can run to split the directory into smaller ones, based on the prefixes of the filenames. My goal is to wind up with something similar to what the Debian archives' pool directory looks like.

code: for f in /path/to/*; do echo mv "$f" "PRE_$f"; done

gives you this: mv /path/to/file1 PRE_/path/to/file1

instead I want this: mv /path/to/file1 /path/to/PRE_file1

General :: OS Acting Weird

Jan 7, 2010

Recently I had (and am still having) a lot of trouble with my Fedora 12 installation.First, 3D acceleration and sound stopped working. This was solver by adding my account to the "video" and "audio" groups (I wonder howcome it worked before?).Then, my keyboard stopped working in X. It would work fine in CLI mode, but as soon as I start X not even the Num Lock LED worked! I think I glimpsed that it might be due to a missing keymap or something, but I don't know. I got my computer back by making Xfce's keyboard settings override X, but it still isn't right, and I can't use anything other than Xfce.Recently I tried to burn a CD/DVD but neither Brasero, K3B, nor cdrecord could detect the DVD burner.

CentOS 5 :: PHP Not Working - Blank Page - Get This Warning: Unknown: Failed To Open Stream : Permission Denied In Unknown On Line 0?

May 5, 2010

I tried posting this before and I'm not sure what happened but I don't think it worked, so if it did please forgive the double post.am very very new to centOS and linux in general. I just want to setup a test web server that more closely mirrors our actual web server that is hosted by rackspace. I've installed centOS and tried to setup Apache, PHP and MySQL from a guide on the web using Yum. When I go to localhost in the web browser I'm able to see the default apache page. However when I create a php page it's just blank. When I look at the apache error logs I get this: PHP Warning: Unknown: failed to open stream: Permission denied in Unknown on line 0

I've been searching alot on the internet and I know the issue is permission related, but I don't know how to fix it. I've seen some forum posts that say you need to use the chmod 775 command on the /var/www/html folder.Currently when I do ls -l /var/www/html it returns

-rw------- 1 root root 19 May 5 13:16 index.php
-rw------- 1 root root 19 May 5 13:15 index.php~

I'm sure that this isn't correct but like I said I don't know much about how to set permissions or who the owner needs to be. I've done alot of searching and seen similar posts, but no one seems to explain it clearly.

Sometimes I can't record anything using the sound recorder and the immediate muting of the loud speaker when i plugged in my headphone doesn't work, but then all of sudden it worked and then the problem might occur again. It's like, in some period the audio works perfectly well as if there's not bug, and then it goes wrong. What I noticed is that the problem reoccur when I shutdown/restart my PC and after few minutes/hours/days it works fine again. Does anyone know why this happens and help me solve this problem?

Software :: Make Uses Wrong Prefix Searching For .la Files?

Jul 19, 2010

I have rebuilded some packages from source to enable some features not in place by default. I usually use /usr/local as prefix for rebuilded packages. Now I have a problem building some other applications. Make exits with error saying that there is no .la file for some libraries from rebuilded packages - and it tries to find this file with /usr prefix, not /usr/local.Of course, I can place link to .la file I need under /usr prefix, but this is not good. Is there any way to make system search for .la files under right prefix (which is right in .pc files for packages too, of course)?
