General :: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" R20110207 Install Hangs - Detecting Network Devices

May 3, 2011

I was wondering if anyone had any issues with this. I recently tried installing CrunchBang and it got stuck while detecting the network device. (Would not recover)I had the same issue when attempting to install the Debian Testing release. I finally got Testing up and going but I had to start with Squeeze and then upgrade. Unfortunately I don't see how I could do that with Crunch Bang.

I tried the live cd of CrunchBang and found it to be a great minimalistic approach to a desktop.

Debian Installation :: Installing Stretch Stops At Detecting Network Devices

Oct 11, 2015

Installing stretch stops at detecting network devices. This is an attempt to install stretch over the top of Windows 10 on a Toshiba Radius 15 with 2 each USB2 ports and 2 each USB3 ports, and no RJ-45. Its wireless is based upon the Intel 7265. Just before the presentation of the wireless list, the system reports the need to install non-free:

iwlwifi-7265D-9
iwlwifi-7265D-10
iwlwifi-7265D-11
iwlwifi-7265D-12

and asks for media. Whether I respond yes or no, the driver selection screen comes up. [I have not been able to find those four specific files on the Internet.The network card screen comes up, I select the Intel recommended firmware iwlsifi, but the page just recreates itself and waits for a new selection. If I select either 'none' or 'not listed', the installation fails saying there is no network card.I have obtained from Intel their suggestion as of Aug 2015: iwlwifi-7265-ucode-25.30.14.0.tgz.I placed this on a USB stick in a subdirectory labeled 'firmware'. This was built from Windows 7 on a FAT32 file system.

There is also a Dynadock docking station that connects to the Toshiba via a USB3 cable. Besides video, USB,and audio, this has an Ethernet port. I have tried this connected to the laptop but it also requires a driver. I have placed that driver on the firmware directory of the USB also.

Are the four files listed above somehow inside the iwlwifi driver tgz?Is there a way to get the docking station drive to load so I can use its Ethernet port?

I have used Rufus to build the stretch USB from Windows. I do have a a Linux box I built with the same USB. I would use it but so far, I only have a command line on it and I have not figured out how to access debian.org to download the installation files nor how to put that on the stick.

General :: Using A Live CD Of CrunchBang To Install Chkdsk To USB Drive?

Jan 17, 2011

My PC has been blue screening since yesterday, and I can't boot into Windows, which the rest of my family needs. I tried to repair from this live CD, but to no avail. If I had a XP Install disk, I'd be OK, but... I don't. I've read around, and it seems that I just need to run chkdsk, but that doesn't run under Linux, and there is no program to do the same under Linux. install and run chkdsk from a USB flash drive?

Fedora Installation :: F11 Not Detecting Storage Devices

Jun 14, 2009

I've been running F10 with a four disk RAID5 setup that has been working fine, however when I tried to do a fresh install of F11 I can't get past the "Select Country" and "Select Keyboard" screen of the GUI as a message will say "Detecting Storage Devices" and then throw up an error. I can't give you the full error, because when I click Save The Detecting Storage Devices box appears and I can not select anything under it or enter my Bugzilla account.However, when I plug just the hard drive that has XP on it then the installer continues swimmingly.I've backed up everything, so if I have to I could zero out the drives however they're all rather large so it'd take an inordinate amount of time.

Fedora :: Detecting USB Devices On Virtual Machine

May 21, 2010

I am running federa 12 and just recently installed virtual Machine Manager. I've created Virtual machine and installed Windows XP on it. Everything is running OK, as far as I can see. I've installed software to manage and download pictures from Cannon camera, but I am not able to make USB port available to this Virtual machine. I tried to add hardware in VM, but not sure if I should go for STORAGE option, or PHYSICAL HOST DEVICE. I tried second option, and selected USB device. Now I've got UB hub available, but still cannot see anything attached to it (camera in my case, or USB stick with pictures).

Fedora Installation :: Consistent Crashes At Detecting Storage Devices

Apr 30, 2010

Getting very frustrated trying to install F12 to my work PC. Its a dell precision 670 with a 3ware 9550sxu raid controller running raid 5. Its consistently crashing at the point when it says 'finding storage devices' with a message about : Mismatched Sizes. What I could try? I had no problem on this machine with fedora 11, so whats changed? Just for info by the way, theres two raid volumes on this system a 750Gb that contains my windows vista installation in a 500 Gb partition (NTFS) and the free space I'm using for fedora. The second volume is a 2TB data volume with a single data partition (NTFS).

OpenSUSE Network :: No Network Devices Recognized On New Install

Feb 24, 2011

Just installed 11.3 kde. When running the live cd both wireless and ethernet devices appeared in the network connections manager utility. I even connected to a wireless AP.I just booted up for the first time and none of these devices are available. There is no network manager icon in the system tray, and when the network manager utility is maually opened the only connection type i can select is vpn.I know that opensuse should be able to recognize these devices since they were available and working via the live cd, so can anyone help me restore them?

One extra piece of info, is that I am sharing a home directory with a gnome ubuntu install. there were a few minor issues i dealt with initially, but i didnt need to change this user's UID like I have had to do in the past so that's good. Each time i open a terminal I get two pieces of output assuming from the bash startup saying something like.URL...I highly doubt that these problems are related, but figured I'd post. Also if someone knows the solution to that as well, that would save me a bit of googling.

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Install Card Driver / "Detecting Your Network Controller?

Feb 13, 2010

I recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 on an old family laptop. It is a Compaq Presario V2000. Everything works perfectly except no wireless networks are recognized, even though I know there are available networks. My network controller is detected but is not doing it's job, which is finding available wireless networks! Using "system testing" I found this out about my network controller:

"Detecting your network controller(s):

Hardware :: BIOS Hangs/locks After Detecting Hard Disks/CD-ROM?

Jul 6, 2010

I wanted to use an older computer again, so I tried to fire it up, but alas. I don't recall when the last time was that it was running, but I don't think it didn't run back then. I just had a new computer

[HARDWARE]
- MOBO: ALiveNF6G-DVI
- BIOS: BIOS P1.30
- CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+

[code].....

[PROBLEM] What happens is this:

1. The computer starts up. No POST-beeps.

2. CPU is ok.

3. RAM is ok.

4. Disks are auto-detected and listed.

5. Then the computer halts. No message, no warning. I am not even able to hit control+alt+delete (I say this, cuz I noticed this. I am able to run and alter the BIOS in an earlier state of booting up, with the keyboard, obviously). It just completely hangs/locks.

[WHAT I HAVE TRIED SO FAR]

1. Removing all hardware but monitor, RAM, keyboard. - Result: comp stops doing stuff after checking RAM, without any message whatsoever.

2. Cleared the CMOS (with the jumper, also by removing the battery). - Result: no changes.

3. There are two pieces of RAM. I removed them all. Result: POST-beeps. I put one back: loaded till after disks. See above. Exchanged the RAM-piece with the other RAM-piece (so: still one piece of RAM): same thing.

Ubuntu :: Could Not Get Actual CrunchBang Install Files

Apr 10, 2011

I had the problem: "could not download all repository indexes". On Cruncheee (An EEEPC specific Crunchbang distro), which I managed to "fix" by changing the /etc/apt/sources.list file by replacing it with stuff I found in a guide. (Shown at end). Now when I press the Reload button on Synaptic no more errors come up! But when I search for "audacious" (music player) I can only find "crunchbang-audacious-theme", and no actual crunchbang installing things.

What have I actually done to my my sources.list file, did I tell it to look elsewhere for servers with lists of dependencies? Is a "repository" just a place on the internet which has lots of dependencies in it? If I were to just add more and more stuff to my sources.list file and kept pressing "reload" on Synaptic, would I eventually find some packages to install Audacious? What does "sudo apt-get" do? Is that exactly the same as finding something on synaptic and clicking it?

My new sources.list:
## Add comments (##) in front of any line to remove it from being checked.
## Use the following sources.list at your own risk.
deb [URL] dapper main restricted universe multiverse
deb-src [URL] dapper main restricted universe multiverse

General :: Add Devices To Computers /dev Folder Over A Network?

May 24, 2011

I was wondering if it were possible to add devices to my computers /dev folder over a network. In linux philosophy, everything is treated as a file, and if I can have my /home/user1 and /home/user2 folders located somewhere on the network, why not the devices in /dev? The idea is that I might control, say, a cd drive in another computer or, a monitor on another computer. Can anyone give me some thoughts on adding devices to my /dev folder over a network? The aim is to make something evil of course! (like a 10 monitor PC)

Fedora Installation :: F12 Hangs - Finding Storage Devices

Dec 9, 2009

I'm installing F12 on a new HP ML-350 G6. The machine has 4 Gb memory, and a Smart Array P410i SAS controller. There are two 72 Gb disks set up as a RAID 1. I'm using a full install DVD. There are no other storage devices other than the RAID, a USB tape drive, and the DVD drive. When I try to install F12 it hangs after setting the keyboard type with "Finding Storage Devices". I've let it sit for an hour or more and it doesn't get beyond that.

F11 installs on the machine with no problem. I've used the F12 DVD on other machines with no problem (but not any other ML-350s). If I switch to a console session, dmesg shows the driver for the controller (HP CISS) has loaded and the RAID drive recognized. The appropriate devices (/dev/cciss/c0d0, /dev/ccss/c0d0p0, etc.) are all present in /dev.

Security :: ClamAV Hangs On Reaching Virtual Devices?

Any workaround? I had to terminate the scan after it stayed hung for over 5 minutes on pan0.

General :: Bridging Network Interfaces Hangs On Getting IP

Aug 14, 2011

I have two physical NICs (eth2 & eth3) with eth2 connecting to the home router/dhcp server and eth3 connecting to another machine which needs access to the internet. I'm trying to create a bridge so that the second machine on eth3 can be connected on the lan. I've tried the following, however it hangs when attempting to get an IP address from the router. Likewise, attempting to give it a static route doesn't seem to work either.

$ sudo aptitude install bridge-utils
$ sudo ifconfig eth2 down
$ sudo ifconfig eth3 down
$ sudo brctl addbr br0
$ sudo brctl addif br0 eth2 eth3
$ sudo dhclient br0 # this hangs and fails to get a dhcp address

I've tried to ensure my routing table mimics what it looks like when using eth2 normally, I cannot hit the gateway at all.

$ route -n
Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
192.168.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 2 0 0 br0
0.0.0.0 192.168.0.1 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 br0

I attempted an 'arping' to the MAC address of the router while I had eth2/3 bridged, but it failed to obtain it's IP address as well. One interesting thing I noticed was that attempting to bring down the bridge & reactivate my internet on eth2, I was having trouble pinging the gateway. It turned out 'ipmasq' had been installed and was running causing odd problems. When I stopped the ipmasq service, my internet started working properly again. I removed the 'ipmasq' package entirely and tried bridging the NICs again thinking it may have been causing problems, but it still failed.

Ubuntu Networking :: Not Detecting Network With 9.04

Mar 11, 2010

I'm trying to get my friend's laptop(acer travelmate 2200) to connect to his wireless network. I just installed a new hard drive and installed a dual boot windows xp/ Ubuntu 9.04 setup.

His laptop still connects fine with the old hard drive with windows XP installed, so I know the hardware is working.

When I click on the network manager , however, I don't see anything. Normally , I'd just hit the network manager and I'd see the available connections , but on this laptop I'm not detecting any.

The only thing I can think of , is that Ubuntu doesn't have the proper drivers needed for the wireless card in the laptop. But I don't know how to go about checking this since whenever I've done this before it's always just worked automatically.
