I've got an Antec Fusion V2 chassis with a built in ir receiver.I've setup lirc on my system, and I can get irrecord to see my remote input and build a config file.I cannot get irw to work, and subsequently no activity on my HTPC.I'm running XBMC Live Further Reading:I've asked two questions on the Live community forum, however it's a slow process and the helpful responses have only taken me so far. These threads include some debug logs and troubleshooting steps.Question 1Question 2I'm wondering if this is something really basic that might simply be missing. The biggest problem here is that Linux changes so fast that information that was valid a year ago is completely obsolete now.

I was trying to create a shell script which will automatically login to the server 192.168.1.7 and checks if a user exists there or not, if it doesn't exist then it should create the user.I have very little idea about shell scriptThis is what I tried:Quote:
#!/bin/bash
pass="sacharje"
ssh 192.168.1.7
Now, how to pass that password automatically to the ssh when it asks for the password? (I can't use public key authentication here)

I am working on a program lets say programX which must run when the computer is not in use. I want to develop a monitoring program to monitor if there is user activity on the system so that it can stop the programX from running when the user is using the system and start programX when there is no user activity. Is there a way to determine this in linux?

I have a network set up that has been working for around a year with no problems but has now developed a login problem. The system was set up with a main server with all users on it and another PC located elsewhere that people could log onto using there personal login and password that then gained access to the account on the main server. This remote PC has now got the problem. When you try to log onto an account it comes up with the message "your session has lasted less than 10 seconds. If you have not logged out yourself this could mean there is a installation problem or that you are out of disk space."
Error message says that no profile for the user can be found and it couldnt create per-user gnome configuration directory. I can log on as root onto the remote PC as it is obviously a local account but all the account on the main server are not accessible. From the root account I can see that the connection to the server is OK and I can actually log into the accounts on the server using the failsafe session so the physical network is OK.
I never built or designed this set up and to be honest I normally work with windows so its all a bit strange to me. Both PC's run Centos 5. I have checked the messages log and there doesnt seem to be any indication of a problem. Just that it stopped connecting from the remote PC. The accounts are all active on the main server itself and have no problems being accessed.

I need to write a script to report useful information on disk utilization for each user's home directory.For each directory I need to show: 1. the long listing of that directory entry (but not the files in the directory), so that I can see the rights and owners of the directory.2. The amount of disk used by that directory, in human-readable format, including subdirectories. I need to have two lines for each user one after the other. For example:
/home/user1 directory info
/home/user1 disk usage
/home/user2 directory info
/home/user2 disk usage
The script will assume that all users, except user root, have their home directories in the /home directory (no need to do anything with the /etc/passwd file). And if the administrator adds or removes users, the script should still work correctly (so the script shows the information for all current users).
Here's what I do know. The command "ls -ld /home/user's_name" will give me the info I need for #1. And the command "du -hs" will give me the info I need for #2. What I don't know is how to grab each individual directory in order to apply the above commands to each of them in order. ???

I want to add 50 new users, not on the server yet I want to add them all to group Accounting - with 1 option, not user by user I want to setup a default password for them all, and have it say something like 'You must now change password or no access will be permitted' Any other options I also want to do once, not for each user?

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on an Acer Aspire 5530G. On a fresh install, the HDD is silent after logging in and the desktop is immediately ready for use. A few days and updates later, after every login, there's heavy HDD activity that lasts about 20/30 seconds and makes it almost impossible to perform any other task. The entire desktop is visible during said event.
Not a big issue, however it bothers me a little. I've observed this behavior since Ubuntu 9.10. Anyone else experiencing similar problem?

I can start/stop it with origami, but I need to know how to run the start/stop commands when the user becomes idle or active.Or, if I can tell if any user logged in with KDM (since I don't want ssh to stop f@h) is active from a script, I can write one that will do all I need.I can edit sudoers if the commands have to be run as the user. There's only one user I'm worried about making happy (it's the one everyone in the family shares)

I am using the sudo command to log on locally as another user by the following command:
sudo -u theotheruser -s
or
sudo -u theotheruser sh
As I see it, this initiates a new shell with the mentioned other user.However, this doesn't load that users profile from his home directory.Is there a way to automatically read the users profile when login in with selected command? I am mostely interested in getting a working prompt when logged in.

For about 15 minutes or so after login on my FreeBSD 8.1 (yes, I know its not Linux) the hard drive goes absolutely crazy with activity. So much so that it takes a while for the ls command to read the contents of the directory. But after the 15 minutes or so the disk activity calms down and returns to normal.
Im thinking it is some sort of fsck command, but I am unsure where or how to disable it. The hard drive is connected via sata to the mobo. Im not quite sure what other info I can post to find out what is going on. Just tell me what other info is needed and Ill post it up.

I know this will sound stupid, but we've been tasked with standing up a professional Linux server to run a vendor tool and product on. And my team has never administered a Linux or Unix box before. I know the concepts, but can't find the tools!
How do I create a user-ID? And is there a GUI tool I can fire up from the command line to make some of this easier? We can get to the box, manipulate files, etc. But to this point we're exclusively usint 'root', and I know I need to stop that, and prevent that happening in the future.

I've got a remote server running CentOS and I require a new user account who would have access to sftp & ssh functions.I've got a bit of a problem creating the user since whenever I try to login with the new account through ssh (putty) I keep getting access denied.I've made different accounts with userids above /below 500; even though I'm a complete noob so no idea how I'm supposed to go about this.

Long story short, someone repaired my brother's computer and set a password on his account, now we can't get in and can't contact the person who set the password. Is it possible to create a Windows XP user if I have access to the windows partition, from a linux partition or pendrive, for example TinyCore?

I have a Virtual Private Server which I can connect to using SSH with my root account, being able to execute any linux command and access all the disk area, obviously.
I would like to create another user account, which would be able to access this server using SSH too, but only to a certain directory, for example /var/www/example.com/
For example, imagine this user has a HUGE error.log file (500 MB) located in /var/www/example.com/logs/error.log
When accessing this file using FTP, this user needs to download 500 MB to view the last lines of the log, but I'd like him to be able to execute something like this:
Therefore I need him to be able to access the server using SSH, but I don't want to grant him access to all server areas.
