General :: Svn User With Very Restricted Possibilities?

Mar 15, 2010

I would like an svn user which is able to check in/out to/from my svn repository by using vn+ssh://svn@blah... but without being able to just log in using ssh or use scp or anything else.s that possible? If I understand, system user accounts have no way to log in (even if we set a home folder, a shell and a password for them ?). But then I did not manage to set things up so that it can use my repositories.

Ubuntu :: Randomly Logged In As Restricted User?

Jul 19, 2010

I have a very annoying problem with my Lucid (installed with ubuntustudio's alternate dvd). Two out of four times when I log in my account has some restrictions. I can't mount devices on nautilus and the shutdown button won't be displayed. If I log out and log in I see the restrictions again. Only restarting (with "sudo shutdown -r now" or so) may give me a normal session. On the console works everything normal. I mean i can sudo with my password.

Debian :: Create Own Self-signed SSL Certificate To Ensure The Basket Area Remains Secure?

Dec 27, 2010

Things beyond my control are causing me to rush a bit in getting the website moved. I'm working hard to try and get it done, but something else has come up that SSL Certificate.I know that our website's "basket" area is protected by an SSL certificate to ensure customer information, especially credit info, is secure. With the move to Amazon's service, it looks like I may need to create our own self-signed SSL certificate to ensure the basket area remains secure.

I have found guides that walk through how to make one yourself and configuring apache to allow it, but something else has come to mind. The guides I found don't really indicate where the SSL certificate goes afterwards, and also doesn't suggest which sections should be governed by the certificate (as only the basket section uses it, not anything else). How would I find out that information?

Programming :: Bash Scripting - Taking User Input And Adding It To A Particular Area Of A File?

Jan 12, 2010

in bash scripting...say I want to take the input from a user via a question...I would do this:

Quote:

#!/bin/bash

echo "How large do you want this partition to be in GB (enter only the number)?" read PART_SIZE echo "You want your partition to be $PART_SIZE GB" But I don't want to echo it back to the screen, I want to add it to the content of /etc/fstab. I have been mucking around with sed to find the tmpfs partition in /etc/fstab and add the partition size attribute (this is to use the onboard RAM as a volatile partition)...but am not having any luck...

The portion of /etc/fstab that uses /dev/shm for the tmpfs partition is:

tmpfs /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0

So, if a user says "24" GB to the answer (from above), how do I get it to automatically add that value to the tmpfs partition line in /etc/fstab? So it would look like:

tmpfs /dev/shm tmpfs size=24g,defaults 0 0

I understand that I would also have to come up with a way to put "size=XXg", which I could do with a copied over generic file before this action...then the script would have to find "XX" and replace it with the user's figure...

General :: How To Create Another User

Aug 11, 2009

I know this will sound stupid, but we've been tasked with standing up a professional Linux server to run a vendor tool and product on. And my team has never administered a Linux or Unix box before. I know the concepts, but can't find the tools!

How do I create a user-ID? And is there a GUI tool I can fire up from the command line to make some of this easier? We can get to the box, manipulate files, etc. But to this point we're exclusively usint 'root', and I know I need to stop that, and prevent that happening in the future.

General :: Create An SSH User Which Can Access Only Certain Directory ?

Jun 18, 2011

I have a Virtual Private Server which I can connect to using SSH with my root account, being able to execute any linux command and access all the disk area, obviously.

I would like to create another user account, which would be able to access this server using SSH too, but only to a certain directory, for example /var/www/example.com/

For example, imagine this user has a HUGE error.log file (500 MB) located in /var/www/example.com/logs/error.log

When accessing this file using FTP, this user needs to download 500 MB to view the last lines of the log, but I'd like him to be able to execute something like this:

Therefore I need him to be able to access the server using SSH, but I don't want to grant him access to all server areas.

General :: Create A SSH User Account On Laptop?

Apr 30, 2010

I never considered I would want to remote access my laptop, or that I would be able to figure out how (I know....). In any case, my (only) username and password are not all that complicated - just there for deterence more than anything else (I have a barely functioning battery and a FDE hard drive, so if you're going to unplug and transport this baby, it'll shut off; my hard drive PW is solid).

In any case, I wanted to create another account that I could use to log into with SSH to be able to access files. I've started by disabling SSH login to my current user account (DenyUsers myusername). I know I could add a new user to my system with its own home directory and all, but I want it as least 'present' or invasive as possible. So in sum, is there a way to create an SSH only user, and if so, how?

I thought I would check here to get some pointers, to be sure I don't mess up my system!

General :: Create A User Account For A Child In Mint?

Apr 21, 2010

Recently I have renovated an old computer which once belonged to my dad (the old HDD crashed, and I just bought a new one to replace it). My parents want me to fix this computer for my 5-year-old sister to use. I decided to use Linux Mint as the OS because everything (flash, mp3, etc.) is already configured.

How do I create a user account in Linux Mint with limited access for my sister, so that it won't mess up the entire system?

All she does is surf the web, so I'm just worried that she might accidentally mess up a system setting that I eventually will have to fix it.

General :: Create A User List In Alphabetical Order?

Oct 22, 2010

I have a server with what appears to have 352 home directories (350 actually if you omit '.' & '..') & I am being asked to basically tally a list of whom all 350 users are in alphabetical order. Now I could sit here for days doing the 'finger' command to obtain their full name commented in '/etc/passwd' file but I would assume there is a script or way I could have Linux quirry the '/etc/passwd' file & take all the user 'comment' entries and export them to a list in alphabetical order. Does anyone know if this could happen and if so, how would I do something like this? I can't write bash / shell scripts to save my life

Code:
cmennens@mail]:/$ ls -l
total 160
drwxr-xr-x 352 root root 12288 Oct 21 13:41 home
