General :: Unable To Connect To Apache At Home From Outside

Feb 4, 2010

I'm running Slackware 13. Apache has been configured and running. That is to say, I can access the server pages on my machine locally using the current DHCP IP address.

However I'm unable to access it from outside (say from a friends's house) using the same DHCP IP address. I read on the internet somewhere that some DSL providers disable port 80 to prevent individuals from hosting. I don't know if that's the case but I did try specifying different ports in httpd.conf and added the port number to the IP address URL but still didn't work.

Code:

I saw some LQ threads which said that the problem could be in the firewall. I don't think I have a firewall but I'm not sure. How do I know that?

I'm just trying some stuff without much concern for security at this point. I understand that a DHCP address can change but for now I don't mind entering the IP address explicitly.

Ubuntu Networking :: Unable To Connect To WPA Home

Apr 20, 2010

First off, I should state that I am still using Hardy. I realize that it is many versions from the current release, but my schedule is full and provides little time to ring out a new distro and considering the nature of my problem I don't see much need.

The problem is that I cannot connect to my WPA home network. The wireless card is working because I can connect to any WEP network and before upgrading to Hardy I could connect, although not at first.

Have recently installed WICD which has not helped. WICD tries to connect but reports that it cannot obtain and IP address. Network Manager did not report anything but did seem to translate the password into an encrypted key (saw posts relating to this before but no obvious fix) Since switching to WICD I have not had the opportunity to test connection to a WEP network.

I do not wish to change the security of my home network to accommodate the operating system.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Connect With Home Network?

Jun 21, 2010

IWithout having made any configuration changes (that I am conscious of), for the past few days I have been unable to connect to my home network - and hence to the internet.My 64-bit Kubuntu (10.4) is on a dual boot machine.If I boot XP then things work as they have done for the past year or so - no network connection problems at all. So I know it's not hardware, LAN or router/cable-modem related. In addition none of the other systems on the network have a problem.

I tried to check if there are some firewall settings that might have changed - but cannot seem to find anything about the firewall in my Kubuntu set-up. Indeed I cannot figure out how to do any problem source identification.

Ubuntu Servers :: Apache Virtual Host Unable To Connect

Jan 18, 2011

I've set up a server running Ubuntu 10.10 (desktop) with apache. Problem is: When I try to configure multiple virtual hosts I can only access the first one. I'm sure that I'm missing something basic in my setup, but I cannot seem to figure out what.

What I want is simply two virtual hosts, one only available on the LAN where I can test my php files and one "live" available from the outside.

Heres what I've done:

Installed Apache2.2
Copy /etc/apache2/sites-available/default -> /etc/apache2/sites-available/dev
Modified "dev" config DocumentRoot and Document to point to /var/www/dev
Modified "dev" config VirtualHost to <VirtualHost *:1337> (port change right?)
Modified "default" config DocumentRoot and Document to point to /var/www/live

[Code].....

Live works fine, but dev cannot connect (as if there is no server there).

CentOS 5 Networking :: Unable To Connect To Home Computer?

Sep 3, 2009

I just moved into a new apartment and now connect via DHCP. Everything seems fine network-wise, except that when I'm at work I can't connect to the home box. (CentOS 5.3 x86_64) One thing I noticed is that I can't really determine my "true" IP address. What I mean is that it looks like my IP is 192.168.0.190, but when I use linuxdcpp, and enter a hub, I'm told my IP addr is actually something like 71.192.163.206. Here's some info:

[root@localhost cwatson]$ cat /var/lib/dhclient/dhclient-eth0.leases
option dhcp-server-identifier 192.168.0.1;
option domain-name-servers 192.168.0.1;

Fedora Servers :: Unable To Connect Apache / Postfix And Php Mail Script

Aug 12, 2009

I installed FC10, and configured everything to work with my static IP address [URL]. As far as email goes everything works except for the php script on my website. This script worked fine on my previous install, and it appears to actually submit the email as shown in the maillog:

Aug 12 14:21:02 myhome postfix/pickup[27581]: 37406BFDD9: uid=48 from=<apache>
Aug 12 14:21:02 myhome postfix/cleanup[27783]: 37406BFDD9: message-id=<20090812192102.37406BFDD9@www.myhome.com>

[code]....

I also created the following php script to test

<?
(mail ("test@myhome","Test message","this is a test"))
?>

And I was able to send successfully with this script with the only difference being it was sent by root rather than apache. This leads me to believe it's some sort of rights issue with the apache user. I wouldn't be surprised is SELinux was behind it all. I spent days and days after installing wordpress trying to get it to connect to mysql, and that turned out to be a SELinux issue.

Ubuntu Networking :: Connected To WiFi At Home - Unable To Connect At Work?

Sep 7, 2010

I have a Dell Mini 10v with a fresh install of latest Ubuntu Netbook Edition. I have enabled proprietary drivers in order to get the WiFi card to work and managed to connect at home, starbucks etc. Good stuff.

For some reason I can detect but not connect to the WiFi at work - I get prompted for the pword and after entering it the WiFi indicater will pulse for a while only to return to the pword prompt. yes, I have the right pword and can connect my iPhone and other laptops. I am really puzzled by this and really need to get on the WiFi at work - wired connection works.

my colleague has the same dell model with windows 7 installed and is able to connect fine - I really don't want that @@@@ installed just to get WiFi. I know password entry error is the obvious solution but I connect new windows devices to it routinely and had other people try too.

General :: Unable To Change - Edit Html Files In New Ubuntu 9.04 - Apache Server

Oct 20, 2009

I suspect that this has come up numerous times, but I am new to Linux and I am setting up a new in-house server using Ubuntu 9.04 and Apache, etc. I can see the welcoming "It Works!" message when I log in via Firefox. I can see "index.html" when I FTP the server with the site name and password at /var/www. I can also see the -rw-r-r-- attributes, but I can't edit the HTML file or replace it. When I try to rename the "index.html" file.

I get the following message: "Request denied. Verify that the file or folder exists and that you have the necessary permissions on the server to perform the requested operation."

I haven't been able to determine where to enter the password or what changes I need to make to be able to work with the /var/www directory via FTP.

General :: Unable To Own Previously Saved /home Files On New External USB Drive

Nov 2, 2010

I have just had to reinstall my OS (Sabayon) onto a new and larger hard drive (dying old disk). I quickly saved all my old docs in /home on an external USB drive (formatted and then created an ext4 file system) before the swap and installation.

After getting the new disk running I connected the USB external disk. First I could not access the drive at all, but that seems to be fixed. Now I want to bring all my files back to my new /home folder but apparently they (especially the former MS Office .doc, .xls, etc files, not so much the OpenOffice files) are read only and I don't have permissions anymore. I am able to create directories on the external, and can move files back and forth, but don't seem to own many of them.Sabayon automatically mounted my external disk in /media/disk, rather than /mnt, so I've left that alone for now. After searching here and elsewhere for info, I tried a few things (below): For access I added a line to /etc/fstab:

Code:

/dev/sdb1 /media/disk ext4 noauto,rw 0 0

Here's what I've done to try and fix ownership already:

in /media I:

Code:

# chmod 775 disk

which gives output of:

Code:

media # ls -l
total 4
drwxrwxr-x 2 root root 4096 Nov 1 21:30 disk

[code]....

I'm not sure what the total 4 refers to since there is only the one directory disk inside /media but I assume that's not part of this issue... Does adding umask=0 have anything to do with this, and if so where does that go?

Code:
Alias /home/ "/home/"
<Directory "/home/">
Options Indexes
AllowOverride All

The system tries to process the alias, but always get a 403 permissions denied error. How do I get around this? I already tried:

Code:
chown myuser:users /home -R

Server :: Accessing Apache/HTTPD In Home Network?

Feb 7, 2010

I am trying to setup Fedira 12 Linux Apache in my home network. I am able to access the hosted website from inside my home network without any problem. I am facing the problem to access it from outside. At the moment i have connected the Apache directly to DSL modem for testing purpose. I was reading "The ISP may have blocked the HTTP port 80. So check it by connecting the Apache directly to DSL modem." The temporary network connections for testing purpose are as follows..

DSL modem (SIEMENS Speed Stream 4200)-->Fedora 12/Linux Apache Server

I am even unable to PING the real ip (IP for DSL modem).(Firefox gave me error message "Connection Timed out) I have tried to ping it from the internet.I can PING the DSL from Apache without any problem.

1. Why i am even unable to PING the real IP of DSL modem at my home.?

2. Is it possible to run/setup Apache by using this type of DSL modem?

3. DSL modem has real IP. DSL MODEM assigns private IP (192.168.x.x) to Apache. So when a http request form the internet came to DSL modem on port 80, will it forward to Apache automatically.? or i have to made any changes.(I can not see anything in DSL modem to change/modify), OR do I have to use another DSL MODEM/Equipment (router)? This setup is just temporary. The actual design is as follows

DSL MODEM(Speed Stream 4200)-->Fedora 12 Linux ROUTER--->Internal network with DNS/Apache Server

Server :: How To Get Apache Running In User Home Directory

Dec 10, 2010

I'm trying to get Apache to run in a user's home directory. I changed the conf file so that Apache runs under the user and group "kiosk" and changed the DocumentRoot and Directory from the default to "/home/kiosk". Then I set Apache to start at boot (chkconfig --level 235 httpd on) and rebooted. When I checked, httpd is running as kiosk like it should (ps aux | grep httpd). However, when I try wget localhost, I get a 403 response back. If as root I call "httpd -k stop" and then "httpd -k start", then everything works exactly as it should (curiously, if I try using "-k restart", it still doesn't work). After this, httpd still shows as running as kiosk and if I check before calling start, it shows no httpd processes running as expected.

This only happens when I use httpd to stop and then start the web server. If I try to restart using apachectl I still get a 403 error. As an interesting aside, after I've used httpd, if I try using "apachectl restart" I get a "(13)Permission denied: Error retrieving pid file run/httpd.pid" error. This is all on a freshly installed CentOS 5.5 server. Why I'm seeing this very different behaviour from what I thought were just equivalent ways of starting Apache? And then what I could do to get it to start up and run properly on boot? One last item to mention is this isn't a permissions problem. I set the permissions to 777 to both the home and kiosk directories (and 666 to the web files) just to be sure that's not the problem.

General :: Unable To Connect To The Internet

Mar 21, 2010

I am unable to connect to the internet. I have Motorola Netopia DSL (NO router) and can't connect to the internet in ANY linux distro (openSUSE, fedora, slax, mandriva, simplymepis, mint, dreamlinux, ubuntu, ubuntu studio, artist linux). The only linux distro that works right away is backtrack linux 3. All other distro do not work including new back track linux 4 because in version 4 they switched to debian. My ISP is Bellsouth and they do not want to cooperate. I was told they do not support linux.

DSL shows internet and activity lights green but it does not connect.It seems to me problem is in eth0 because when I go to terminal and ifup eth0 it gives me can't assign requested address. I have dynamic DHCP and can't assign static address.I have 2 questions:

1.- How to connect to the internet?

2.- As I said above backtracklinux 3 works out of the box but doesn't have flash.How to install flash in backtrack linux 3 so I can play chess on Yahoo games and [URL]?

I run all linux distros from live CD/DVD from external DVD drive except fedora which is on C: drive.I did try to run already network devices, dsl configuration without any results If I can go to my modem thru browser address 192.168.1.254 I would be able to solve the problem but I always get message can't connect to server.
