General :: Ubuntu Really Freaking Slow On HP Dv6113 / What To Do?

Apr 7, 2009

I've been battling this problem for months. Ubuntu on my HP laptop is really slow. I had FC8 before installing Ubuntu and had no problems with speed. Any ideas on where I could start looking to fix this? I'm using Nvidia's graphics driver configured for dual monitors. Could this be a problem with my configuration? Could it be some kernel parameter that I'm not passing? a bios setting?

Ubuntu :: Keyboard Settings Freaking Out?

Oct 7, 2010

I recently changed my keyboard layout to US International so I could learn to type in French, but after that, I wanted to switch it back to plain old US default (or whatever it's called...) I went back in and changed it the same way I did the first time, and it works fine until I shut down the computer. When I log back in after booting up the computer, the keyboard layout resets itself to US Int. again. I've tried deleting it from the list, moving it down, applying normal US to the entire system, and resetting the keyboard layout to it's default state, and yet it still resets itself. Anyone know what's up? I'm running Lucid on an HP Pavilion notebook.

Ubuntu :: Screen Brightness Twitching And Freaking Out?

Jan 22, 2010

My laptop with Ubuntu 9.10 just randomly while adjusting the brightness using the shortcut key commands on my laptop the brightness started to glitch between two brightness levels. If I don't use the shortcut keys it doesn't glitch unless I shut the screen or restart the computer. So I've had to put up with this for the past couple months now and I think that it might even drive me to reinstall but then I lose all my data.

Ubuntu :: Slow Startup, Plymouth Not Showing, Slow Desktop Load?

May 3, 2010

I'm an Ubuntu user since Jaunty, and I've always upgraded my system (NOT fresh install). Everything went fine, but yesterday I upgraded to Lucid. My only concern -for now- deals with startup time. I'm a desktop user (Core2@3GHz) so I think I should boot in less than 10 seconds. Anyway, boot time is 30 seconds - not too much, but there is definetly something wrong with tools I don't know (ureadahead, plymouth, etc.). Attached is my bootchart: can anyone explain me what's wrong?

Also, I don't even see a plymouth Ubuntu themed bootsplash: I only see a blank (black) screen standing for seconds, then I see the bootsplash for less then half a second, then GDM appears :S Not crucial -I know- but how can I fix it? (I don't know if it's related, but I can see the animation at shutdown)Finally, GNOME desktop takes too long to load. I don't know why, but there are 15/30 seconds in between login sound and a usable desktop (with panels and icons, I mean). Please help me, I don't want to do a fresh install. Boot speed is not a dial with desktops - I know - but it can be a symptom that my system is a bit a messy (and I don't like it, since I installed Jaunty less then 1 year ago). (!Forgot! I also installed grub2 by hand

Ubuntu :: USB Disk - Slow Transfer Speeds And Slow System?

Apr 17, 2011

Whenever I transfer a movie into my 16GB USB flash disk, my whole system becomes windows-like and unusable!

When i drag the file(s) into the USB disk folder, it starts out fine and pretty darn fast (25mb/sec) then slowly decreases until it's unbearably slow (3m/sec) and as a side effect my whole system starts deteriorating. I basically have to wait for the file to finish transferring before i can use my desktop again!

This has been happening with every version since Karmic (all 64bit)- I put up with it because I don't use the USB stick that much.. but lately it's been my go to source for transfering large files to/from work.

General :: Slow Pppoe Connection Using Ubuntu 9.10?

Feb 4, 2010

I have a Compaq Presario CQ61, instaled Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows 7 on it.

It works great except the PPPoE connection in Ubuntu, when i dial in Windows my download speed reach up to 91 Mb, rebooted in Ubuntu, downloaded same file from the same server with a speed of maximum 3 Mb, cheked in Windows again 80 - 90 Mb constant. I can't figure what slow's the internet connection in Ubuntu.

(NO iptables configured, NO HTB, CBQ ...etc configured) .

EDIT: I don't have any modem or router. I am using PPPoE directly from my PC. I didn't mentioned that I instaled Ubuntu two times but didn't figured out what was causing the problem, so I instaled Fedora 12 (64), this works fine and the speed reached 85 Mb. I instaled latest Ubuntu 10.4 on the same Laptop, the problem is not solved, the speed reaches up to 3Mb, when in Windows or Fedora reaches up to 95 Mb (yesterday).

General :: Slow Running Ubuntu 10.10 Laptop?

Oct 31, 2010

I have a slow computer. When I click on an icon say Firefox it can take 10 seconds to load. when I minimize and maximize windows you can see it happening. I get "ghost" screens where you see the window outline of the box but nothing in it or it may be white. The laptop is two years old and has these specs:

Intel core two duo 2.8GHZ CPU
4GB RAM
500GB HDD
512MB Nvidia 8600GT video
Realtek HD audio

What is going on and where should I start looking for issues? Ubuntu 10.10 was upgraded from 10.04LTS following the instructions from the Ubuntu Wiki and it was done through the update manager GUI, not the CLI.

General :: Installed Ubuntu 10.10 - Slow Download Speed

Feb 13, 2011

I have just installed ubuntu 10.10 and i have noticed that my download speed is quite slow. i have an excellent connection to the internet and i didn't have any speed problems when i used windows vista. (i'm using a friend's windows 7 os right now and everything is fine.) how do i modify the download/bandwidth feature that is naturally a part of the ubuntu package so that it's not a problem anymore? the most i think i saw it download packages and files was 37 kb/s.

Basically, the kind of downloads i'm doing are for installing new packages to ubuntu, and that took ages. i even tried to download ubuntu 10.04 from ubuntu.com and it would have taken almost 3 hours to complete!

I dual boot my machine with windows 7, and I have no wireless problems at all when I am running windows. I disabled IPV6 and that did not do anything.I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 hoping that this may fix the problem however my wireless internet is still very slow. When I plug my computer directly to my modem, I have no problems at all.I was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to what might be making my wireless Internet so slow when I run Ubuntu?

General :: Top Causes Of Slow Ssh Logins

Jul 22, 2010

there are 2 spots where I see a range from instantaneous to multi-second delays.Between issuing the ssh command and getting a login prompt and between entering the passphrase and having the shell load. Now, specifically I'm looking at ssh details only here. Obviously network latency, speed of the hardware and OSes involved, complex login scripts, etc can cause delays. For context I ssh to a vast multitude of linux distributions and some Solaris hosts using mostly Ubuntu, CentOS, and MacOS X as my client systems. Almost all of the time, the ssh server configuration is unchanged from the OS's default settings.

What ssh server configurations should I be interested in? Are there OS/kernel parameters that can be tuned? Login shell tricks? Etc?

General :: Which Distro To Run On A Slow SSD?

Aug 7, 2010

I bought an Eee PC 1000, the Linux SSD model, a couple years ago. I ended up putting Easy Peasy (then called Ubuntu Eee) onto it, only to be dissatisfied with the speed. Then I put Windows XP on it, and with a LOT of tweaking it ran sort of okay. Now I pulled it out and dusted it off but I want it to run Linux.

It has the Intel Atom 1.6ghz processor and 2gb of RAM (I upgraded it) so there's no lack of power there, but the SSD is extremely slow; it has a small write buffer, but when you do anything slightly significant you can feel the system stutter every second or two as the SSD halts everything while it dumps its full cache to disk. I'm talking serious stutters, and the cache isn't very big; to get Firefox to not stutter I had to move all caching into RAM and disable history (even just writing the history log to disk froze the system with every webpage).

Anyway, I hope I've given you a decent idea of just how slow this SSD is. With that said, is there a Linux distro that is optimized for an extremely slow hard drive but decent powered system? I'm not looking for something underpowered because the processor and RAM are plenty powerful, I just want something that perhaps is optimized for not writing to disk often.

General :: NFS FS Mounted With 'noac' Is Too Slow?

Sep 27, 2010

This may be to specific of a scenario, but it is real.- I use an NFS mounted FS as a destination for my backups from multiple clients. - If the FS is mounted with 'noac' which in effect disables write caching, backup performance is horrible 40kb/sec.- If I remove this mount option, backup performance is fine 12mb/sec. However, because of write caching, my cpu io wait time increases (up to 40%) and performancen the entire host suffers unacceptably. My initial impression/solution is to find a way to enabling write caching e.g. do not specify 'noac' and limit OS write cache size

General :: Whole System Very Slow And Keeps Crashing?

Jun 27, 2010

Not really sure I'd call myself a newbie with Linux, I've been using a few different distros for a little over a year now.. maybe longer.Though, I'm not very good with terminal just yet. I don't know all the code stuff.I put this system together about 6 months ago. It's comprised of about 50/50 new and used parts. Everything should be listed in my signature file. All was running just fine when the build was complete. But now it seems every day its getting slower, crashes almost every 30 mins.. USB 2.0 runs very slow and lags to the point it just stops altogether.

I really wish that I could test on Windows, or any other OS for that matter. But I'm down to my last hard drive, a very slow (4k RPM?) tiny (40GB) Maxtor IDE. I don't even want to waste any more of my time trying to install/reinstall any OS to the thing. Don't think my mobo allows for booting from USB flash drives, and still yet with it running USB so slow what would be the point?I've tried Ubuntu 10.04 and was very satisfied... except that it won't allow any usage of my Azio PCI wireless N card. The light goes on and it flashes as if its trying to connect, but it won't connect to any secure connection.

So here I am back to 9.10 and wondering if my hdd and/or RAM could be causing some sort of problem? Is RAM being a bottle neck? It's DDR333 but CPU clocks it320 because of something to do with the 800FSB and whatever stupid Intel chipset is on mobo. Can someone please give me a suggestion as to where to start? I have no other computer and really need it for school and work. I have no money for new system or even any more parts. It's getting me so peed that I'm about ready to take a 4 pound sledge to it
