I have been casually using Unix for about 20 years, but I've never really done anything beyond basic user things unless I had instructions/help.
I've set up an Ubuntu 10.04 system and it works great except for one thing. It doesn't resolve local names.
I can ping or access other systems by IP Address and I can resolve internet names with no problems, but it won't recognize any of the other systems on my home network.
The system is set up for dhcp and everything is defaulted from the installation. There is no DNS suffix or domain set up on my router.
I'm on 11.04 on VMware 4.1, trying to get name resolution working. I can ping by IP other systems including on the internet. The network manager Icon on top shows a wireless icon, but the 'Wired Network' is grayed out and below that says 'device not managed'. What can I do to fix this? The interfaces file has the auto lo, then below that iface eth0 inet static stuff... It doesn't work with or without the auto eth0 entries.
I have the nic set to DHCP and on my dhcp server gave it the mac address of the box to assign it an address, that is working.
I have also used external DNS servers just to eliminate there being a problem with 192.168.1.67 (which many other computers are using successfully).
When I attempt to ping Google just to see if it works I receive this:

I had thought that host and the name lookup routine would use the same DNS server and it should fail on the host command as well as the ping, but evidently not.
At work we run DHCP. hostnames have the format: computername.city.mycompany.com
I have a laptop runing Fedora 13 and a desktop I use for backups, etc. My laptop is named copernicus. Desktop is named galileo. If ping either hostname from itself I get back the localhost IP address. If I ping the fully resolved hostname it tells me unknown host. The desktop is exporting an NFS share I use for backing up work data. I need the laptop to be able to resolve host names to mount the share since we use DHCP. The desktop is dual boot and if it is booted into windows my laptop can resolve the hostname properly. What do I need to do in Fedora to get it to register a hostname with the DNS and/or DHCP server? Should the domain and the search path below both say the same thing?
Here is resolv.conf on the laptop (I am at home). The desktop looks the same, except for a different nameserver. Both computers can resolve other hostnames, just not each other.
I just set up my first ever bind9 DNS server running on ubuntu server 10.04. This server is also my gateway/dhcp server.
Here is what is weird: If I do a dig @8.8.8.8 dschuett-lmtl.scs.local from any of my clients it resolves?!?! Dig shows that it got the answer from MY Bind9 DNS server (and NOT Google's of course), but why is it still resolving when I'm telling it to use and external DNS server?
The other weird thing is that the SAME EXACT dig command above does NOT resolve internal host names if I do it from the Bind9 DNS server. - Which is what i would expect SHOULD be happening if done from the client machines...
In my network my proxy / firewall (iptables + squid) works as dns forwarder. I needed to configure an url at my /etc/hosts in my linux boxes which are behind the firewall into the lan. I want my machine to look at its local /etc/hosts file before querying the dns to the firewall.
Despite I configured my /etc/host.conf this way:
My machine keeps resolving the name through the dns forwarder (firewall) and not from the /etc/hosts file first.
Is there any action needed after configuring /etc/host.conf? Any service to restart?
here are the steps that i have taken already to resolve and troubleshoot the issue. i can ping Google. i can browse the Internet i can browser the repo Index of / through my browser. i have insured that ipv6 is disabled through network configuration through yast.
I have change my mail server previous when i open my domain [url] it goes to [url].Now i have change my Mail server from openwebmail to Zimbra Server .so when i again open to it mail.mydomain.com ,proxy server takes to [url].
If i bypass proxy server then it open mail.mydomain.com(My zimbra Page).i have also updated internal DNS addresss But Squid not updating it

I'll apologize in advance for I'm sure this has been covered already, but I'm not sure of the search terms to even use to begin solving this problem. I don't know what I don't know.
I have three computers on my home network and want to reach them by their name instead of IP address since their ip is dynamically assigned. I'm using a Linksys WRT54GL router and have noticed that there exists a "DHCP Clients Table" in the router that seems to hold all the necessary information - host names and ip addresses.
How can I get my computers to use that as the lookup table to resolve the host names? And is this even an optimal way of being able to resolve local names?
I have three Debian systems running, along with several XP laptops, PS3 and two DirecTV systems. I use two of the three Debian systems as media servers, and the third is an older system mostly for playing around with. My home network is running fine with the following nuisance. The two newer Debian (Lenny) systems are <barney> and <mitzi>, the older is named <oscar>, running Debian Sarge 3.1. From either locally or remote login to <barney> and <mitzi> I can ssh into either of the other two systems, however when logged into <oscar> I cannot ssh by name to either of the other systems. e.g. ssh: mitzi: Temporary failure in name resolution..However, from <oscar> I can ping outside my network (e.g. ping www.google.com) with no problems.I can also ssh to the other systems via IP address, just not by name.
I've compared the /etc/ssh/ssh_config, /etc/resolv.conf, /etc/ssh/sshd_config and other files between the two systems and not seeing anything peculiar. arp, route, etc., don't show different behavior between the systems either.
I recently installed bind9 on mandriva 2008.1, after having done the necessary configuration.. I still can't find my domain I configured cant ping on other machines on the LAN but can actually ping on any other website on the internet even though name server is configured to point to local machine..... I dont understand what I'm doing wrong.
I want to use single label host names on my local LAN, without using any domain (at least no registered one). My machines should be named in a fashion similar to 'myserver', 'mydesktop' etc. so that i from a browser on any LAN machine may write 'http://myserver', and get the webserver on 'myserver' (so NO domain part, e.g. myserver.domain).
Do i need to create a DNS zone for each host or is there a way to put all host in a single zone, if so; which? Would such a name be considered a root domain?
We are in the process for Integration Network with our Government Network. Let say that our network are 192.168.0.0/24 And the Government network are 10.0.0.0/8 I want to know if the local network can resolve the internet names in Government Network. I am using Bind for DNS.
I have an internal domain (dev.lan) for which my Ubuntu server is authoritative. We have a number of subdomains under that domain (test.dev.lan, svn.dev.lan, etc.). The server also acts as the primary DNS server for my office. It was originally set up under Ubuntu 8 and worked great.
However, ever since we upgraded to Ubuntu 10, our Windows clients periodically lose the ability to resolve domains on the dev.lan domain. Internal IP addresses can still be pinged from the Windows machines so it does not appear to be a network-connectivity issue. External domain names continue to resolve without any problems. The only workaround is to restart networking on the Windows clients. It's frustrating because it happens several times a day.

Ok, I have a couple of SMTP servers for our infrastructure. They are running Postfix. I have them configured so that specific email addresses such as support@mydomain.com and billing@mydomain.com all go to a new support server that I am building with osTicket. Lets call that server SUPP1.
SUPP1 runs sendmail from the default install of CentOS 5 i386. At this point everything runs great. New emails get added into the osTicket system via a pipe in sendmail. Here's where the problem comes in. In order to accept mail, sendmail has to have the domain listed in local-host-names and the addresses in virtusertable. That works just dandy. But in doing so, sendmail believes it is the destination SMTP server for "mydomain.com". That means that I can't send mail from that server back into my normal SMTP servers. So things like the LogWatch, cron jobs, etc can't send notifications. Is there a way to work around that? For sendmail to ignore local-host-names for outbound email or something?
Setup:Two Fedora machines in a large network, with a Win2003 server in the epicentre.Goal:To share files through the Public folder.Results so far:I put files in the public folder, I enable anything I can find related to networks in the Firewall (samba, nfs, and even www (http). In the public folder preferences, I set 'Share over a network' and never to ask a password. I do all this on both machines.Then I open Nautilus, and click on the network link. After a little while I get three links:Windoze network, public files on computer 1, public files on computer 2. Let's say I'm on computer 1, if I click on the public files on computer 2, I get the following error:

I have a mac and an openSUSE box connected wirelessly to a router. From my mac, if I ping the Linux machine by both ip address and hostname "elmo.local", I get a response. If I ping my mac from the Linux machine using its ip address, I get a response. However, if I ping the mac from the Linux box using its name "kermit.local" - nothing!
This means in order to share files between them via the network, I have to use the ip address rather than name, but I'd rather not. When I had Ubuntu installed instead of openSUSE this all worked fine out of the box, so I'm assuming it's a problem with the setup of openSUSE rather than the router or the mac.
I installed fedora core 10 on my pc & now i have been trying to install samba. I dont have a network so i mount and use my dvd for installation. I lack exotic package management tools like apt or yum yet the system-config-packages tool does not make sense either. so am stuck with the rpm -ivh [package] command.
The issue however is that this command returns querries about missing dependencies when I attempt to install. So is there a way (switch) i can add to tell the rpm command to automatically check and solve these dependecies using the Packages folder on my mounted dvd? - because i believe all these dependencies are on the dvd.
I set a variable before entering the FTP session (vDate). Then it does not seem to resolve when I try to use it in the session as part of an mput command. $vDate resolves as an empty value. Can you point me in the right direction?
I have a version of slackware installed as a virtual machine and am not able to ping hosts or otherwise receive data from any IP addresses external to the LAN. I think this problem is due to the hostname of the vm not being recognized by the gateway (ddwrt); the vm receives an IP via dhcp but the gateway does not seem to recognize its hostname (registers as *).
Will readily respond with whatever conf file is needed.
I have a samba mount in Windows, mounted from a local Linux devbox. The projects on this mount contain a lot of symlinked directories. They all work fine and look like normal directories to Windows. What I'd like to do is figure out for a given file what its real UNIX path is.The context is: in my editor I have a script that runs the Perforce open command, to which I pass the file location.p4.exe edit FILE_LOCATION
However, perforce will not understand this FILE_LOCATION, if on the Linux side part of the path is a symlink. It needs to know the real path.What I need is something along the lines of the Linux readlink command, which resolves symlinks in paths.
One of Konqueror's unique features is that i can name a local process as the action in a form. When i submit that form, the local process is executed. Very helpful for certain offline tasks. What would make it even better is if i could find a way to pass some data to that local process from the html page. This could be the content of a hidden input item, etc. Alternatively, if there is a way for Konqueror to create or update a local file with data from the html page, that would acheive the same end.
What command would you use to read about the sync system call (not the sync command)? How would you read a local man page for sync that was kept in the /usr/local/share/man?
I am trying to install tilp, a program for the link between a computer and a Texas Instruments calculator. I have downloaded all the packages to a local directory. I tried telling yum to install all the packages at the same time, though, the dependencies still fail to resolve (though they are all in the directory). I don't know if it would be safe to force install without the dependencies (even though I would install them later).
The lpr man page says a destination printer can be specified with the -P flag -P destination[/instance] Prints files to the named printer I have 'added' various printers on local Samba shares using the GUI in Ubuntu/Gnome. How can I get a list of these available printers in the format that the -P flag expects (preferably from a bash shell)?
I use the command line frequently to navigate my files so I try not to have spaces in file names. Typically I have used an underscore to connect words but it was recently suggested that I should use a dash. Are there any disadvantages to using an underscore in file names?Should I switch to a dash? My system is running Xubuntu and I almost exclusively use the bash shell.
