I am looking for a terminal app that will allow me to save my password and maybe set up some sessions since I often log into multiple machines each day. Also is there something out there that will allow me to save common commands to a hot key?
View 1 RepliesI was trying to navigate by terminal and tried to change directories by typing- cd ./documents and terminal states no such directory. I can only navigate folders that I created with mkdir. Do I need to set permissions somewhere? Yes documents does exist in my home folder and I tried to open others with no luck.

The reason being, is I was reading a thread where someone was stating about how they had to do all this and all that from a terminal and what not and that there should be a GUI Tool.
Well I'm going to make a GUI tool that allows them to obtain all the necessary information (and fixes are possible too) to help with their issue that they're currently having. For example: I know we run lsmod for sound issues, but what other commands do you have them run to check sound, video, network, etc. It will be made in wxPython so that it can be easily sent to others. If it becomes quite useful, then maybe we could get it in the repos.
I long while ago (when I was in collage) I used VIM a bit. I have not used it since and would like to get back into using it. I remember there being a way to split the screen within VIM to show common commands on the bottom portion of the screen. I've searched a while and cannot find how to set this up.

Do I need to do a re-installation of bash? Or how do I install a selection of bash commands which I need? (for example a subset of [URL])

I've recently lost my window options, had to somehow manipulate my way to Xchat and ask some people how do I get it back (it was metacity --replace, and after I decided to stop the command and run it in background the X was completely useless so I had to do killall -u user). And that was after the internet connection stopped working for some reason (might've been the ISP).
The thing is, after using linux a long time, I still get the feeling that on dire situations, I don't know the good tricks (stuff like metacity --replace). I feel like a really need like a "rescue" cheatsheet for things like: how to save the X no matter what without pressing reset how to reset the system to "normal state" how to connect to the internet through the command line how to monitor what the X is doing (using ubuntu linux 10.04 btw)
This question may be silly and super easy for linux connaisseurs, but I was just wondering, for instance, I want to use the >find command to search for a file and send the results to a text file

View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to get a script to open a gnome-terminal and input commands into it, just as you would typing them in. That way, I can automate commands using bash, even if the terminal is running a non-bash program like telnet, mysql, vim, etc.
So, for instance..
I would like to open telnet to connect to a mud (I'm aware of the security concerns) and input commands through a script.
This way, I can log in, enter name/password, and do some start-game stuff automatically.
This isn't just for a mud, though. I'd like to be able to script inputs for any terminal application... maybe automate vim, mysql, or whatever.
I am using:
user@unknown:~$ sudo command -option > log
to save the results of "command" to the file "log", but I'd like to also get the result on the terminal, is this possible?

View 2 Replies View Relatedi started using computer when it was all dos driven so thought i was going to be fine using the terminal in ubuntu the problem i am facing is i can not quite get my head round why is it if i load the terminal. and the first this i type is dir or ls it gives me a list off directories. So why is it if i type cd /pictures i get no such file or directory ? Confused

In a couple days I plan on changing to opensuse from kubuntu. Anyway in the Kpackagemanager I removed the pulseaudio client (and its dependencies) and it messed up my system a bit. I don't really mind but all I need is to get my files from my home folder off my hdd to an external through usb 2.0. When Kubuntu 9.10 boots now all it is is a command terminal basically and I don't know the specific commands to get the files. Or if I need to reinstall something so that it boots up with a graphical looking UI again.

(i.e. after logging in remotely) I tried "echoing" to "/dev/pts/X" (X = number) but that doesn't seem to work. It just displays whatever is echoed there -- it is not accepted as input.
