General :: Storing Data To An External Device From Aspire One?

Aug 14, 2010

I have an Aspire One with Linux operating system.

I have an external hard drive that I want to save data to from my Aspire One however when I try I get a message that the external hard drive is full.

I know it isn't full and when I use the external hard drive on my other pc with Window 7 it is fine.

I am assuming my problem is something to do with the ACER Aspire One

Hardware :: RAID 5 And Storing The Boot Data On The 1st Hard Drive?

Apr 13, 2009

how to set up a boot partition on the first hard drive separate from two RAID 5 configurations on a Supermicro server with 1-750GB hard drive for the boot partition, and 15-1TB hard drives for data. The 15 hard drives are split into two RAID 5 configurations (7 -TB drives and 8 1-TB drives). I will be installing CentOS 5.2, and the 15 Terabytes of data will store data, and the 750GB hard drive(on port 0) will only have the 100MB boot file. I am using 3ware BIOS Manager to configure the first array of 7 hard drives, and the second array of 8 hard drives (1 drive with boot information will not be included in the array).

to recap, picture this: I want to load CentOS on this server. /dev/sda1 (on the bottom left drive) needs to house the boot partition set for 100MB. The remaining 7 drives (the left half, not counting the boot drive) need to be set up as a RAID 5 array. The eight drives on the right (right half) also need to be setup as a RAID 5 array. After I configure this in BIOS, I run the CentOS setup disk in graphical mode. I get to the portion after the Language and keyboard setup where it says "Installation requires partitioning of your hard drive. By default, a partitoning layout is chosen which is reasonable for most users. You can either choose to use this or create your own. Select the drive(s) to use for this installation". The drives listed are:

"sda 5721980 MB AMCC 9650-SE-8LP DISK"
"sdb 1020 MB AMCC 9650-SE-8LP DISK"
"sdc 714218 MB AMCC 9650-SE-8LP DISK"
"sdd" 6675643 MB AMCC 9650-SE-8LP DISK"

When I choose "Remove Linux partitions on the selected drives and create default layout." or any other option, I get different errors. I notice when configuring via text mode I get better options to install. I can't install the boot drive separate from the two RAID configurations?

I'm looking for a tool similar to synctoy in linux. For those who dont know what synctoy does is... its a simple syncing application that allows you to copy your data between multiple hard drives and keeps all copies in sync with the latest data. I'm specifically looking for KDE based tool if KDE based is not available then my second preference will be for gtk based app.

General :: Data Recovery From External NTFS Disc?

Mar 19, 2011

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 and am trying to use it to recover data from a failed External HDD (NTFS).

The drive failed with an accompanying smell of electric burning and subsequently was not recognised by Windows. It would recognice the enclosure, but told me that the drive had to be reformatted.

I removed the drive from the external enclosure and hooked it up to my PC with a power cable and USB to SATA connector. I can mount the drive in Ubuntu (eventually) and I've learned enough about BASH to navigate through the files on the drive.

Those that I can access I am able to copy across to my internal drive (VERY slowly, but it does do it) but a lot of the directories show up with an Input/output Error when I run the ls -l command.

Is there any way for me to be able to access these files or to recover them? Should I be trying a different technique rather than just attempting to access and copy the files?

General :: Multiple Distros - One Data Partition - External Drive

Apr 8, 2010

I've got an external hard drive with one large data partition on it. I also have four computers to connect it to (individually, not at the same time). Three machines are running Slackware and one is running Ubuntu 9.10. I need to be able to just plug the drive into whichever machine, mount it (preferably to the same location each time) and not have to worry about user permissions and such. Do I just chmod 777 all the files and folders or is there a better method for different 'users' to access the same partition? And how about mounting to the same location each time?

Now the second part of my question I'm pretty sure I'm not able to do but just in case..... is there any way to encrypt the information safely and make it compatible with a Windows XP machine?

Ubuntu Networking :: Acer Aspire One 1551: Wi-fi Device Not Found

Oct 31, 2010

I have an Acer Aspire One 1551 netbook. After I installed Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Remix (my first Ubuntu, though), I discovered that wi-fi device isn't being recognized - ifconfig says that I only have ethernet device present.Somehow rfkill list indicates, that acer-wireless is always blocked. How to unblock it? rfkill unblock 0 doesn't resolve the issue - device is still blocked.somehow 'Fn+WiFi' combination on keyboard activates/deactivates Bluetooth instead of WiFi. Can I alter the behavior of the combination to turn on/off wireless networking? I googled for a while but fruitlessly. Is it a known problem? Is there a workaround for it already? Is there any additional information (clues) I can provide to speedup the process a bit?

This is what lspci returned:

General :: Usb/external Drive Problems Redux - Read-only - Does This Suggest Device Failure

May 22, 2010

I initially thought the problem had to do with the Lucid Lynx upgrade, a lot of people have been reporting similar issues with drive mapping and things along those line. My issue is that an external drive, formatted in FAT32 appears to be corrupted, and overtime begins to read or mounts as 'read-only.'

What I've read, and deduced, is that this is ultimately and issue with the drive. I've backed it up, reformatted, and been able to write to the drive successfully, but I've been moving a lot of files (backing up) and the system has been reporting input/output errors in transferring some files (through the GUI).

The only thing I can think of, is that the device itself is corrupted or damaged, and that I need to be thinking of other back-up options for the future. Any suggestions on disk-doctoring? I'm hoping to do a clean-install of the OS once I back up my files manually.

General :: Smartcards For Storing Gpg/ssh Keys?

Apr 14, 2010

I'm interested in storing my SSH keys and gpg keys on a smartcard for added security. However, I'm a bit uncertain on a few points, which are as follows:

How many keys can I get on a card? I assume both SSH and GPG can store keys on the card. Is there a limit to key size? I see a lot of cards saying they support 2048-bit keys, what about larger sizes? Hardware: can anyone recommend a card/reader combination that works well? I've done a fair amount of research and it seems PC/SC readers can be a bit iffy - is this your experience? Have I missed anything I should be asking? Are there any other hurdles?

I'm aware fsf europe give away cards with membership - I'm not sure I want to join, but... are these cards any good?

General :: Where Does ITunes Store Its Stuff - Copy Its Data Store To An External Drive

Dec 8, 2009

I have two students whose windows laptops are riddled with malware and not working properly. They want me to help them install Linux (which we use in school), but they are concerned about their iTunes.

Having avoided iPods as "defective by design", I know nothing about iTunes whatsoever. However I remember reading about DRM locking and such problems that have me concerned that I won't be able to do it.

Where does iTunes store its stuff?

Can I copy its data store to an external drive, and then into a linux home?

Then will it work on wine, or can another manager (rhythmbox etc) access the itunes data?

Alternatively, if I partition the drive and install linux, can rythmbox/wine/something access itunes data on the win partition?

Supposing they are buying music through iTunes, what will happen to that account?

Finally, one of them has an iphone. Does that work with linux?

Ironic that an apple application is blocking migration away from windows.
