View 3 RepliesI've had two hd's in my box forever. for more space and backup reasons. Well I have started running the Debian Squeeze distro since December. I've had many issues, some are still unresolved. but now I'm running into major headaches with the fstab. Specifically dealing with/wondering why UUID's are used instead of the old /dev/hd? I was a little annoyed when I tried Kubuntu to find /dev/sd? used instead of /dev/hd? but that was workable. But the UUID's are a nightmare. Here's my problem.
My main box is finally giving up the ghost. The mobo is dying. So in order to do some tests I took my hd bundle (my two hard drives with their cables) physically out of the box and temp installed them in a test box. I wanted to do some benchmark and other tests. I got all kinds of errors. I found that the system wasn't recognizing the UUID's listed in fstab. My concern is when the new mobo gets here next week I won't simply be able to plug the hd's in like I always have been and just let Linux reconfigure itself (Debian used to be good about this). I really don't want to have to clean reinstall if it's not needed.
So for this I have two questions. WHY developers decided to drop using /dev/hd? or even /dev/sd? ?
And is it possible to revert fstab's listings back to the old /dev/hd? settings. In debian fstab had lines commented out showing how each partition was listed in it's /dev/hd? status during install.
I'm getting really sick of all these archane changes in ALL aspects of linux that don't seem to have any good explaination or need.
After installing 11.4 my fstab entries for CD and DVD drives as well as floppy generate errors when I try to mount them automatically or via Nautilus when inserting CD or DVD. The icons and CD/DVD name show up ok but will not mount. Manually mounting via terminal command works. Here are the relevant lines from fstab
[Code]...
In /dev scd0 and scd1 are symlinks pointing to sr0 and sr1 respectively. The above error message was generated after attempting to load a CD in scd0 i.e. my laptop internal CD/DVD drive. Lines 10,11 and 12 are the fstab lines quoted above.
I'm trying to get fstab to auto-mount a removable device when its plugged in? Is this possible and if not what is the easiest way to auto-mount a removable device?

Also am using RHEL 5, I can create the driver floppy, but when I type "mount /dev/fd0 /media/floppy" I get error: "mount: mount point /media/floppy does not exist".Can I get the files in a format other than the ext2 floppy image, so that we do not need to use a floppy drive? There is a readme file inside the driver archive & you can use that as a reference.

View 1 Replies View RelatedBeen using Ubuntu to extend the life of my hard drive. I'm not very familiar with the inner workings of Linux, but I know computers well.
My System:
- Ubuntu 10.04, gnome environment. Dual boot XP.
Problem:
- my external drive, WD essentials 2.2 TB, stopped working recently, about 6 months after installation of dual boot.
Facts:
- still detected, though SMART does not detect it.
- XP still detects it - cant access files though. *
- Ubuntu now detects a floppy drive, which I do not have.
- power still working.
- have tried a few different USB cables.
- happened around the time of several software updates. Maybe paranoia.
- had trouble with music playback.
Hypothesis:
- Drive is dying, cuz XP wont allow me in. *
- Something happened and it rolled back the drivers on the External HD.
- Somehow losing Voltage, though I dont know how. **
Have attempted:
- Disabling Floppy from bios.
- In Windows: disabling XP service pack 3, disabling Firewire 1394.
- Different USB cables. **
- Disconnecting all USB devices, except External HD. **
/dev/fd0 does not exist. I have floppy disks I wish to use.m using debian unstable.Nautilus doesn't recognize it, nor does dolphin. I have no clue if the floppies are formatted or not.fdisk -l only sees sda, my hard drive.Floppies are so neat! I want to use them in linux.

I am using gpointing-device-settings as a program to get the scroll bar on my touch pad working. unfortunately, I can't get the settings to stick after i shutdown and turn on. I have to go into the program and unclick then reclick the button. i'm using version 1.3.2 (ive tried both deb and source versions). does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? and if there is any configure files that I could configure instead of having to use the gui program.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have UUID entries for USB devices in fstab in my Ubuntu 10.10. I assume this is because I have upgraded my Ubuntu's since 8.04. Each time I boot, I get a message saying it cannot mount the devices even though they are present. I have to skip mounting in order to complete the boot process. I also have two filesystems mounted at Root ( /). See later post in this thread.can I safely remove these entries from fstab and have Ubuntu automount the devices? If I do so, will this get rid of the messages at boot time?

I have an Aspire One with Linux operating system.
I have an external hard drive that I want to save data to from my Aspire One however when I try I get a message that the external hard drive is full.

I am assuming my problem is something to do with the ACER Aspire One

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have set up two external hard drives to automount in fstab with the following lines:
/dev/sdb1 /media/DownstairsBackup ntfs-3g rw,auto,user,exec,sync 0 0
/dev/sda1 /media/UpstairsBackup ntfs-3g rw,auto,user,exec,sync 0 0
And right after I restart, all users have permission to read and write, and everything is fine. However, I have an automated backup utility (BackinTime) installed to back up particular (mounted network) directories every night, but whenever I check up on it the next day, I get the error "Unable to mount ..... Authorization required". (These network directories are mounted into the local filesystem in fstab as well.) Oddly enough, if I run BackinTime by hand as the users, it works fine. I'm running 10.04 LTS.
I am trying to write a script to modify /etc/fstab that will add entries for a number of partitions on different disks.
The only thing that I do not know how to do is to obtain a unique id such as the ones in /dev/disk/by-id/ to address by from a given partition (ie /dev/sdb1). In my fstab I noticed that in installation the system added fstab entries that are unique (in /dev/disk/by-id/)
I could simply do /dev/sdb1 and so on, but I would prefer a unique identifier so that each mount point is tied to a partition on a specific and unique physical drive.
i need this to be script-able if possible, if not I would still like to know.
I have centos 5.3 installed. I plugged in a WD usb external HD, Icon is showing up on desktop everything is working formatted with ext3. I would like to have an entry for this in my /etc/fstab file, and I need to know how to enable Quotas on some files on it.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI initially thought the problem had to do with the Lucid Lynx upgrade, a lot of people have been reporting similar issues with drive mapping and things along those line. My issue is that an external drive, formatted in FAT32 appears to be corrupted, and overtime begins to read or mounts as 'read-only.'
What I've read, and deduced, is that this is ultimately and issue with the drive. I've backed it up, reformatted, and been able to write to the drive successfully, but I've been moving a lot of files (backing up) and the system has been reporting input/output errors in transferring some files (through the GUI).
The only thing I can think of, is that the device itself is corrupted or damaged, and that I need to be thinking of other back-up options for the future. Any suggestions on disk-doctoring? I'm hoping to do a clean-install of the OS once I back up my files manually.
Is there something weird about the FLOPPY DRIVE on F12? Nothing associated with it works & I can't get an icon for it. Also the FLOPPY FORMATTER no longer works. (mine is an internal drive)- I had some really miner quirks with it in 10 but it worked. I had some workaround launchers that I used until an upgrade semi-fixed it. (It would give a false error that it couldn't run but did. I just ignored it.)
I tried to edit FSTAB to cure a problem of my BACKUP drive showing up twice*** so while I was in there I added the stuff for the floppy & it still doesn't work. If I try to mount it manually, I get the error that /dev/fd0 doesn't exist.I tried to find some info on it & it SEEMS that there MAY be a bug but I'm not sure as the info is a bit confusing as to just what version & such they are talking about. And there was also the problem that all the stuff seemed to be OLD or not related to my problem.I why I quite hacking at my system, is that all my workaround launchers & the formatter say that there are GNOME things missing & they can't run. So I figure that there is something missing or screwy already & that I'd better ask BEFORE I make things worse or actually break something. With the fact that floppies are about gone, it's getting to be not that big of a deal but I still find myself having to use them for repair purposes (albeit, not as much) & it gets to be a bit of a pain to fire up M$ just to do something like this.
*** It appears that the one in FSTAB was the one I needed, so where would the OTHER one be so I can get rid of it? Or at least make it auto mount.

I am trying to view my pc on my new flat screen but am unsure of the settings. I am using ubuntu 10.10. I have been trying (and on ocassion succesfully, but never really understood what I have done) to view my pc through the monitor option under preferences. Selecting the different monitor size but always find my external monitor (ie TV) is to the left, right above or under the screen I see on my PC. Also I am unable to hear my PC through the TV. I should say this is a good quality flat screen and all I am unsure of are the correct settings to use my TV as an external monitor.
