My university has a system set up where each class has its own directory for the professors to publish and receive files. These directories reside under a directory in /home which happens to be a mounted disk and are accessible anywhere in the system by referencing ~csXXX where csXXX is a sub-directory within that home directory. How are they doing this and how can I do it on my own systems?
View 2 RepliesI have a 3ware controller that has a RAID 1 of two SATA disks.After an outage, the linux box (which is running ubuntu), restarted and the partition is now mounted read only. I only have the "/" mount point (this is a test server).Now, if I go to the 3ware controller by pressing ALT-3 while booting, I don't see any indication that there is something wrong with the disks.If I let the computer boot, I'm asked by fdisk if I want to fix/ignore/etc the inconsistencies found.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI work on machines with different architectures, all of which share the same home directory(what is the technical term for it -- network mounting ?). Since I don't have admin privileges on these systems, I have installed programs in /home/<my_id>/bin. A program compiled for one architecture doesn't work when I login into another system. I'm thinking of creating architecture specific directories which would contain inaries/libraries specific to that architecture and creating a softlink to it t /home/<my_id>/bin. The only problem with this solution is that I can't work on two systems at the same time.

I know it's considered stupidity, but I deleted my home directory.
Is there an easy way to restore a working home directory? I tried copying /etc/skel under root, but I'm not sure what a home directory should look like once it has been restored. Besides . & .., there were .screenrc & .xsession in my home directory when I copied /etc/skel. Are these files suppose to be in "/home" or "/home/~" or both?
For some reason we have some network storage not mounted properly after an unexpected restart (ie OS or memory issue) and the subsequent reboot. Has anyone come across this before? It's a bit strange that certain disks are not mounted.Anyway, to detect this, can we insert an extra line into the /etc/inittab to perform post start checks. For example, I have inserted an extra line before the runlevel scripts in /etc/inittab file.
The line will call /usr/local/fstab-check.sh to perform a check on the disks mounted via /etc/fstab. Am thinking of comparing the output from the command "df" versus the content of /etc/fstab.
I'm having a problem where the hidden directories in my home directory show up as disks on the desktop.
These also show up as disks in the Nautilus browser. The attached screenshot shows this.
Does anyone know how to disable this behavior?
I go to places-acces server-ssh and connect to a remote server with Nautilus.All ok.But I prefer to use vifm as my main file manager: I try to find the ssh-mounted devices in /mnt or /media but cannot fin them.Does anybody know where they are?

Let's say /1 and /2I also have an NFS client running Fedora 9.I am able to NFS mount /1 and /2 from NFS server under /mnt/1 and /mnt/2 on the client.If I do a df command on the aix server,I see that /1 is 2Gb total and 1.7Gb is usedand /2 is 2Gb total and 1.4Gb is usedI see the same if I do a df command on the NFS client (Linux)Now, the confusing part is here: in the GUI of Fedora, if I go under /mnt and right click on /1 and check folder properties, it tells me that there is ~ 54 000 files (which i assume is the correct number) for a total of 5.3Gb! And for /2, properties indicate 1.2Gb. Where do these extra 3.6 Gb come from on /1...? and even the smaller difference for /2 confuses me (but this might be just the way different systems round off large numbers)?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a PC with 4 harddisks and one ssd drive, presently PC boots from the 1st harddisk and other harddisks (sometimes 1, 2 or 3, depends upon the requirement) are used for the storage. Now i want to boot the PC from SSD and use the other harddisks for the storage only. My problem is that when system boots it takes 1st harddisk as sda and SSD as sdb, if i am using only one harddisk, and if i use 2 harddisk it takes sdc as SSD. So i am not able to give fix boot point in menu.lst file, if i wish to use root filesystem from SSD.I am using 2.6.33.7 kernel and grub bootloader. I have tried using initrd with udev but not able to include and start udev properly in initrd. I am trying to boot from UUID or LABEL, but no success. Am i missing something in kernel to get the UUID or LABEL.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've got a couple of commercial NAS boxes and I'm wondering if they (ReadyNas duo, DLink DNS-323) or any other NAS is suitable for having their RAIDed disks moved to a software-based NAS. To be specific, I'm a big fan of the (largely) Debian-based Ubuntu. Can the aforementioned NAS drives be migrated to Ubuntu (e.g. using the mdadm Linux command)?
Secondly, is there any commercial NAS that can be migrated over? Incidentally, here is a link to somebody who succeeded in a migration:URL...My specific scenario I'd like to prepare for, is the eventual (sudden) death of one of the NAS motherboards.
I am searching for any system call similar to "ls" command we use in shell. My requirement is knowing the files and directories in curent working directory and process them based on there type. Here as of now I spawn another procees with system command like system
("sh ls -l | grep ^d | awk '{print $9}'").
Instead of this I want to use any system command where I can capture this information directly into my local character buffer. My opinion is that system calls will not spawn another process as a result less time it takes, another reason is once I use the system command again I need to capture the information to a local file then again read it into local buffer. I want to avoid the file manipulation here.
I am using Gentoo Linux and for a while now, the root file system is mounted read-only on booting. For obvious reasons, this is quite annoying as most services do not start up correctly (I do not use a separate file system for /var). After the system is up, I have to log in, remount the root file system read-write, fix /etc/mtab, mount all other file systems in from /etc/fstab and then start up all the missing daemons. I know that there are ways to make a system run properly with a read-only file system, but I would rather restore the old behaviour of a writable root file system.
The strange thing is that after running mount / -o remount,rw, the file system is mounted in writable mode without any errors. I suspected some problem with fsck, but now I have disabled automatic file system checks on the partition (tune2fs -c0 -i0).When I run dmesg, only these lines mention the partition at all, although I am not sure if not something gets lost because /var/log is not writable:

I have mounted a iomega file system on a cetos os machine using
mount.cifs //filserver-ip/directory /home/my-home/mounted-file -o

(** mounted as root) The mounting works fine.
The problem arises when I try to create a sub-directory inside the mounted directory. All the newly created sub directories become write protected.
I am accessing this file system from R software and it needs to write/create directories in side this mounted directory.
how can newly created sub-directories will become automatically writable, so that R can create new sub-directories and write data inside those directories.
I tried setting up sftp for my users. Each of my user have their home directory at "/var/www/public_html/$USER". When my users are using sftp, they can only see their own directories and unable to move to other locations of the system. I followed through the following tutorials: [URL]
The users are able to sftp into the system successfully. However, they are able to see the whole system. Somehow, it appears that the users are not jailed in their home directory although in the tutorial it states otherwise. The difference of my system against the tutorial is that I am using Dropbear for SSH server while it is using Openssh server. Although dropbear does not support sftp, I am able to login through sftp through the use of sftp-server. For the internal mechanics, I am not sure how though.
Assuming that when I tried to SFTP, the sftp-server is ran with the sshd_config, then everything should be working fine right? Do i need to run chroot command at all? The following is the procedure I used to attempt the objective:
1) Add a new user to the group: SFTPonly
2) Chown user:SFTPonly user/home/directory
2) Modify the sshd_config to what is reflected in the tutorial and other paths.
I recently started having unusual directories appear on one of my mounted arrays. I did not create them (intentionally) and I have no clue what they are. They all have the this in the name of the folder "samba_symlink_dir_traversal.nasl-<10-digit number>" they all have the same time-stamp for the date modified column (see pic).
What are these folders? Why are they appearing? And how can I make it stop? It doesn't do this on my other mounted arrays and disks. I recently grew my two attached arrays, this started right after that, but only on one of them. Connection? Also, it may be relevant, the folders are different today in their modified date(reflecting today's date) and the numbers in the name of the folder are different too.
i am in need of linux help. iam at college and i need this back/restore script to pass this final part of an assessment. i require a backup script that will not only backup but also restore files to the relevent directories. e.g. users are instructed to store all wordprocessor files in a directory named wp. so i am needing to create a backup directory and 3 directories within that and some files within the 3 directories and then back them up ot restore them. l know i should/have to do this myself by been trying to get/understand info for the last few days and came up with zero.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI want to make a webserver with multiple users allowed to login through SFTP to a specific folder, www.Multiple users are added, lets say user1 and user2, and all of them belonging to the www-data group. The www directory has an owner www-data and a group www-data.
I have used chmod -R 775 on the www folder, but after I try to create a folder test through my SFTP server (using Filezilla) the group of the directory created has only r and x permissions, and I am not able to log in with the second user user2 and create a directory within www/test due to a lack of w permission to the group.
I also tried using chmod 2775 on www directory, but without luck. Can somebody explain to me, how can I make it so that a newly created directory inherits the root directory group permissions?
I am writing a script, in that my requirement is, if all the fill types stored in one directory from that we need to separate different different directories based on the file types.
for example in a directory(anish). 5 different types files
1- directory
2- .txt files
2- .sh files

I have an ntfs partition that I wish to access as a normal user(non-root). For this I did the following. As root I created a folder /windows and did a chmod 777 -R on /windows. Then I added the following line to /etc/fstab

Now, the partition is mounted alright but the problem is that when any other user (non-root) creates a files in /windows (say by executing touch newfile) the newly created file has the owner and group set as root. The non-root user can create the file and he can also delete the file, however, he cannot change the permissions of the file and also the owner:group is always set as root:root. How do I get across this problem, i.e. how do I mount a partition, so that a non-root user can also change the permissions and ownerships of the files he creates.
I'm going to buy a new system, and I have 2 SATA hard disks from my old system. One is installed with a Linux OS, the other with Windows Vista.For the Linux hard disk, will I be able to simply use these 2 hard disks on the new system and boot up, retaining all my data? If not, how do I transfer the data from my old hard disks to my new hard disks? My old system is faulty (no signal to monitor), so I can't just copy everything directly using, say, a portable hard disk.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have implemented LVM to expand the /home partition. I would like to add 2 more disks to the system and use raid 5 for those two disks plus the disk used for /home. Is this possible? If so, do I use type fd for the two new disks and use type 8e for the existing LVM /home disk? Or do I use type fd for all of the raid disks?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have never seen this one before (see below) - note how /dev/sda1 is mounted from the first disk listed by fdisk, but /dev/sda2 comes from the second disk; what is going on here? This is what I did: I installed the latest debian "Testing", which went well - it found the disks in the order show by fdisk -l here. When it booted up after installation, it failed because it couldn't find /, which I repaired by editing the grub menu (I told it to start from the other disk), and it came up. But now I had to mount /u01 by hand from /dev/sda1; strange. I suppose I could just go and change the physical disks around, but I'd like to understand this. Any ideas?

I would like to obtain the more efficient solution in order of speed (performance): as far as I can understand (not so far) .. it seems that the best choice is:

I thought to have understood that ubuntu use swap only for hibernation / suspend activities, and therefore it's recommendable to put the system at the beginning of one disk, and the home folder at the beginning of a second disk in order to have quickly two disk reading / writing on the right position without moving too much and spend time.
But now I'm confused because it seems that ubuntu DOES use swap for normal activity (and so it's better to put it) at the beginning of a second disk.
I always saw my swap next to zero during my activities .. is ubuntu using swap like windows with pagefile.sys?
I have a DVD-R made by a friend who has found no fault. It will not play in my Panasonic DVD-recorder, and when I put the disc into the computer optical drive it does not appear in the places list, though the drive is mounted. I can display the video using Gnome Mplayer (but no other application) and I can copy to ISO using Gnomebaker, but this creates another unreadable disc. Gnomebaker finds a bad sector 120832 at 41% of the disc. If I could read the VOB files on the disk I might be able to make a playable copy, but it baffles me that Nautilus cannot read the disc.

I am giving the below rates (values) which I took from my test (from my comparisons between SAS 10.000 and SATA 7200);

I have/had a PC with several hard drives, and a mix of ubuntu and windows on multi boot.The old boot drive died screaming, and I need to start again. (But my data is safe! yay!)
Is there anything special about which drive can be the main drive to start booting from? Or to put it another way, can I install to any of the other 3 and expect it to work, or do I need to switch them around so a different drive is on the connections for the recently dead one?
