And we are unable to restore the setting because the button to click on to do so is outside of the viewable screen! Also we have lost the start bar/dock at the bottom of the screen and cannot figure out how to get it back.
View 1 RepliesI feel really stupid posting this, but I can't find what I am looking for. I feel like I have a decent understanding what is going on, but I am missing something very elementary. I have several mpc clientpro machines that are all in one's with 17" monitors built in. I can't get any resolution to fill the screen. I have been playing around with settings in xrandr, to no avail.
In windows xp it is usually ran at 1024x768 resolution which is supported. However there will be about 2 1/2 inches of blank space on the right side of the scree. and then another 2 1/2 inches of blank space on the bottom followed by about 2" of what seems to be a mirror of the top 2". I can change to several different resolutions all taking up different sizes of the screen, but nothing will fill it.
I understand I can't just do anything I like, like it would be unreasonable to expect the card to output 1920x1080. But can't I get it to at least fit the screen? Whether it was 1024x768 or 1152x864 or 800x600.
I have been searching and searching, and I think I am just simply misunderstanding a key term that is not allowing me to find more information on this. Something like panning, overscan, etc.
I have a dual boot system with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10. I want to make my grub menu look good and have set a beautiful background image to it and set the resolution so it fits the screen. Is it any way to resize the actual menu to make it smaller without shrinking the background picture?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop of which a large part of the screen is broken (shows garbage). Fortunately the broken area is a clean rectangle, the bottom 1/3 of the screen or so.
The laptop is running Ubuntu 8.04, but I plan to reinstall it with 10.10. The graphics are provided by an Intel 915GM or something in that direction.
Knowing this, do you know of a way to tell the system about the broken part of the screen, so it will simply not use it? I don't really care whether it's done at the hardware, X or window manager level, though as low as possible is preferred.
I long while ago (when I was in collage) I used VIM a bit. I have not used it since and would like to get back into using it. I remember there being a way to split the screen within VIM to show common commands on the bottom portion of the screen. I've searched a while and cannot find how to set this up.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI was playing with Compiz on my netbook and installed Fusion. All was well until I rebooted it and now I am missing all effects and a portion of the screen. I am purged compiz and reinstalled it to no avail. I did mess around with the outputs and changed 640x480+0+0 to 1024x600+0+0 but have no changed it back attempting to fix my issue. I have attached an image of the current situation. Basically, I am trying to get my compiz running again with all its sexiness.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop with a cracked screen. the crack is not very serious, about an inch and a half on the right. I can still use my laptop but it is hard to see information in the cracked area.
My question is how can i set up ubuntu not to use that portion of the screen, sort of tricking it into thinking that the display is essentially 1.5 inches shorter on the right than it really is.Perhaps setup x11 differently?
Unfortunately my experience in the Unix* based world up to this point has only been using web servers and administrating them, no GUI experience of any kind so I am completely unfamiliar with the setup and entire usage of Xorg or any other Window manager at this point. The issue I am having is with the screen resolutions I am being allowed to chose for my Dell Studio 1535 running Fedora Core 13 and the KDE 4 desktop GUI, thus my issue since I am not really familiar with how to run a Unix* based GUI in the first place.
The basic information, if there is more needed just advise what and what command gathers that info (or what conf/log I should look into in order to find it). Laptop is a Dell Studio 1535 Video is the Mobile Intel GMA X3100 ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics. LCD interface is the LVDS.
So far it seems to give me modes for 1024x768 and on down, nothing above this. I believe I am supposed to use the radeon driver being that is the type of card it is but every time I change the xorg.conf file to use this instead of vesa the system wont get past the loading screen anymore upon reboot and nor can I seem to find a way to bring up a command line so I can hit up the Xorg.0.log to see what is wrong or change the xorg.conf file back to the original driver it had listed.
I am going to assume this is a missing driver or something else it hangs on but without being able to get access back to the system and having to rebuild it again (re-install via live CD) I am basically out of luck at this time. Sorry for the rather poor post but I do hope to receive some basic directions on where to go from here with this issue

Five months ago, there was about 3.9GB free space of root, but now it is only 1.6GB. I always run sudo apt-get autoremove and sudo apt-get autoclean every time the update is finished, and also use Bleachbit to clean the system, but both are useless.
I never faced such problem with older versions of Ubuntu, is there any measure to fix it?
Does anyone know of a way to make the hulu screen size smaller? The smallest that I can get it is still taking up about 1/4 of my screen.,
View 2 Replies View RelatedI was scrolling through some multi-monitor problem topics and I guess everywhere has been having all kinds of issues. Nevertheless, I'm going to try and get mine solved. I have a laptop and I can get my monitor up and running, switch between default and not, and move it above/right/left without an issue. But if I unplug it, or boot up unity without my laptop connected to the monitor, I cannot get any functionality. The screen is distorted (as if unity is trying to display my monitors 1080p on my laptops smaller screen, or maybe even the 3268x1080p format that my dual setup runs with).
Is this a known bug or are there fixes out there that allow unity to self-adjust depending on whether my monitor is attached or not?

1. There is not any .deb in the /var/cache/apt/archives.
2. The total content of /var/log is only 167.6 MB, that won't be a problem.
My ubuntu session will freeze and stop working. For example, the mouse and the keyboard will stop responding and the screen sometimes get divided into 4 smaller quadrants of the current screen.The only thing I can do after it freezes is reboot the machine.Would anyone know what is causing this?Also, I keep having to move my optical mouse from the usb slot into a ps/2 slot.And the same thing with my keyboard. I have 2 keyboards, so I can plug in the old ps/2 keyboard instead of the new usb keyboard. (the devices keep flipping)My machine is an AMD 3400 with an Epox mobo. Nothing like this has ever happened before, and I have been using ubuntu for more than 4 years without any problems.

I've tried Kubuntu, but I don't get any higher screen resolution than 640*480. The graphics adapter that seems to get me in trouble is an Intel based one.
I'm open to other OS'es that uses KDE -I just need to be able to use Kdenlive.

It didn't go as smoothly as I had hoped, one of the casualties being the proprietary nvidia driver I had previously installed. So I fixed that using the 'Debian way' rather than NVIDIA's installer, and that is now all fine. So far so good. However, when I boot up, pre starting X, my screen is a much lower resolution than it used to be (640x480, I think). Really chunky and ugly as it runs through the start up scripts. I assume that somewhere early in the startup scripts the nvidia driver is being loaded and set to a low resolution. Can someone advise me where this might be, and what to look for? Am I on the right track? I stress that this is before X is started. Once X has started the screen resolution is as I want.

View 14 Replies View Relatedi have been searching for the past few days on how to do this i have found many articles all telling me slightly different ways of doing so but none have worked. the monitor i am using displays at 1680x1050@60Hz however most access will be from a laptop running at 1366x768 through VNC i have the VNC working thats not a problem my current problem is that when i turn it on the screen defaults to 1600x1200@60Hz when i go to System>Preferences>Screen Resolution the options i get are 1600x1200, 1280x1200,1024x768, 800x600, 640x480 however when i change to something other than 1600x1200 the refresh rate changes to 85Hz and cannot be displayed by my monitor so i have to wait for it to default back, not that i want to change it to any of those in the long term /etc/X11/xorg.conf looks like this (i have only edited the Modes line)

I just installed 64 bit Debian 6 (Squeeze), and the O/S will not identify my monitor or allow me to set screen resolutions higher than 800 X 600.
I had the same problem in Debian 5, and remedied it by editing the xorg.conf file in the X11 folder in the /etc subdirectory. Worked like a charm.
Debian 6, however, has no such conf. file, and the Debian installation notes at Debian Wiki says Debian no longer uses Xorg as a video driver.
I am, therefore, completely lost.

I'm currently studying for my Linux+ test and I'm getting conflicting information regarding the rm -rf command. Yes, I know this a dangerous command, but my question is in regard to how the command functions. In one book I'm studying it says that rm -rf / home/myfolder (there's a space in there) will delete the entire root directory because there is a space between the root and home directory. It says that if there is a spacing such as this, it will ignore anything after the space, so in this case, it would delete the root directory and stop, not that there would be anything left anyway. Then in another book I have, it says that if you did a rm -rf folderName / (with the intention of adding the trailing slash to indicate it is a directory and not a folder) it will delete everything in folderName (assuming it's a child directory of your pwd) and then CONTINUE on and delete the root directory. Now, those two statements contradict each other. When you remove a directory, does the command line ignore anything after a space or not?
View 1 Replies View RelatedOn the boot up to the Grub loader screen my monitor (Acer X193w) displays a "screen resolution not supported" message in a floating window, even though the Grub screen itself is displayed. It appears as a flattened rectangle, like wide screen format films on a TV (black bar top and bottom), the floating message on top of it. Once Debian is selected and boots, obviously my xorg.conf takes over and sets the 1440X900 resolution and everything is fine. But the Grub start up bothers me. How do I set the resolution of the Grub loader screen?

I tried adjusting the resolution in Ubuntu so that it would fit better on my screen. The first one I tried worked ok, but when I tried a higher resolution the screen went black. Now I can't see anything on the screen so I can't change the resolution back to where it was. If I hit esc when booting up, is there anything I can do that will change it back to the default?
