Ubuntu :: Making Slight Progress On Banishing .IECauthority Demon

Jan 14, 2011

So, "unable to update .IECauthority hit me yesterday in a big way. After trying all sorts of suggested remedies in the [solved] and unsolved threads, it became quite evident that the chown and chmod would not work coz ubuntu cant find the "file or directory specified" by .IECauthority. {pardon the n00bspeak}

So i looked around for the "new user" option, i.e. creating a new user so i can log in. That worked. i got to terminal and used sudo adduser guest and now i can at least log in but, predictably i cant access the files of my home directory that was under my "owner" login.

How i can access these files as my new "guest" user alias?

I feel like im so close to beating this friggin .IECauthority error though i am well aware i brought all this misery upon myself coz i just had to have the extra skins for this particular screenlet...

Fedora :: Can't Open Terminal To Correct ICEauthority Error - Can't Update IECauthority File : /var/gdb/.IECauthority"

Mar 13, 2010

Whenever I boot my fedora 12, even before asking me for my login name, etc., there comes a message saying "Can't update IECauthority file : /var/gdb/.IECauthority" and hangs at the place. Even the mouse doesn't move. If I were able to open the terminal somehow, perhaps by changing the file permissions, I could get something. Also, when I boot from ubuntu 9.10 and try seeing what's in the /var directory of fedora, it doesn't show anything, even if I display the hidden files. If the directory gdb doesn't exist, why is it showing the error ?

Software :: Demon Process Aborting Randomly

Jul 20, 2010

I have written a demon/service listening to a socket to accept and process connecting clients. I've modelled the service on the multi-threaded example given by [url].

The service seems to work correctly, processing clients then at what appears to be random points, it will terminate and I don't seem to get any error messages or information.

I'm executing the demon script by using another script, attempting to catch any output.

Both scripts are attached.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Slight 720/1080 Video Lag In All Players?

all HD video lags. Slightly, but constantly. You can watch movies, but it's annoying.

My PC - intel i3, integrated 4500 vga and 4GB RAM, Ubuntu 11.04 64bit. CPU usage is around 30-70% and disk load is low.

Typical performance tweaks like "skip loops - all" and read buffer size doesn't affect current condition. In Ubuntu 10.10 everything worked flawlessly.

PS. whether 4500 gpu acceleration should work in Ubuntu 11.04 by default? I can't set it up...

Ubuntu :: Font Hinting Subpixel Smoothing On Slight Not Full?

Sep 28, 2010

Using Ubuntu 10.04.My fonts looked different today. Only slightly different. So I went into the appearance preferences to try to figure it out.In, Systems->Preferences->Appearance, click the "Fonts" tab and for "Rendering" select "Subpixel smoothing (LCDs)".Then click "Details". For hinting I choose "Full". Then I close the "Font Rendering Details" dialog box. And close the "Appearance Preferences" dialog box.

My problem is that my system won't keep my "Subpixel smoothing (LCDs)" font Hinting setting on "Full". It keeps changing it back to "Slight". When I go back into the settings one thing I notice that you can see in the picture is that for "Rendering" they all have the minus sign. Then when I re-click on "Subpixel smoothing (LCDs)" it shows up as "slight".

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Slight Stuttering In OpenGL Program If Using Compiz

Nov 15, 2010

I'm using currently ubuntu 10.10. Having a nvidia gt220 with the proprietary drivers. I used compiz for a while. It works quite well, with vsync on and so on. But one thing bothers me all the time: In any opengl program (like a game or the unigen benchmarks) or on video playback (no matter if its the default video player, xbmc or what ever) I see some kind of stutter. About every second or so it jumps one frame forward and then two back. Till the next second it plays fluid.

To be able to observe this easily you need a video (or a opengl scene) where the whole screen scrolls in a medium speed but smooth. Than you can observ how it "jumps" every second. If the scrolling is too slow you wont observe it. Now, if I turn composite off this disapears. All play fluid. Ofcourse I get tearing as long as I do not also disable the composite extension in the xorg.conf, but this is another story. Is there a possibility to fix this stuttering with compiz active? Cause I use this pc to watch movies quite often so this would render compiz unusable.

Debian :: Slight Delay In Root Terminal (inside X)

Jan 26, 2011

When I'm in OpenBox, I often have a termianl (lxterminal) open in the background. The terminals responds quickly when logged in as my standard user. If I, however, use su to switch to root, there's about a 2 or 3 second delay on the output for any command I type. This delay goes away if I type another character or tap the spacebar. That input is read as normal -- I've accidentally answered 'y' to prompts before.

My machine is an ASUS Eee PC 1001P (1GB of RAM, Atom 450) with an 40GB Intel SSD.

General :: Slight Delay When Switching Modes In Vim Using Tmux Or Screen

Mar 2, 2011

Switching to and from insert mode in Vim is no longer instantaneous since I use tmux. After pressing Esc in insert mode, it takes a noticeable amount of time to actually get out of insert mode. After pressing Esc and any other key afterwards the switch is immediate, and the command for the key pressed after Esc is executed. Any idea what might cause this?The Vim configuration is not the problem as the delay does not occur when I run Vim outside tmux, so this is probably related to tmux somehow. I use gnome-terminal btw.

Also worth noting, it seems I can not define key bindings in tmux for Esc, my plan was to bind Esc to:bind Escape send-keys.Alas, it seems binding anything to Esc for tmux does not work. The same problem occurs in screen as well.

Programming :: C - Copy File Line By Line With Some Slight Changes?

Mar 2, 2010

In C, I want to make a program that will take a file and replace it with a file that's nearly the same but with some minor changes. Also, I would like to point out that I'm still fairly much a beginner with C. As for an example of the file, I want to take something like this:

Code:

Random Crap
More Random Crap
Even More
Something That Changes XXXXX

[code]....

I figured the best way to go about doing this was to open the file and a blank file, read the original bit by bit and when it gets to the point that needs to be changed exchange the part that needs to be changed with what it should be changed to, delete the original file, and rename the new one to the correct name. So the first problem I've run into (and I'll probably have more) is that when I'm trying to read stuff from the original file, my program doesn't seem to be finding the original. I'm sure much of my problems will be just from not knowing how to use the C functions so bear with me. Right now I have the following:

Code:

#include <stdio.h>
#include <string.h>
#include <stdlib.h>

[code]...

And when I try to run it I get the following:

Code:

Died Here: No such file or directory
Segmentation fault

Right now the length of 50 was just a random test length. Pretty much I was just trying to get it to read anything from the file. In the end I'm going to want it to read the entire file bit by bit, but at the moment I can't seem to get it to read anything.

Ubuntu :: Display Progress Bar Using Cp (if Possible Mv Also)

May 16, 2010

A quick google search gave me a possible answer at this post: [URL] However, this isn't my question exactly. It sort of is, but the answer is not correct for me. I'm wondering how to show progress of a cp or mv command. The man page says -v should do it, but it seems it doesn't show any progress at all. Is it possible to show progress info with cp or mv? Or, is there a different command I could use that would show a progress bar. I know for example scp will show a progress bar, but that is for local-->remote or visa versa, but I'm trying to copy locally.

Ubuntu :: GParted Progress Bar Stuck?

Aug 19, 2010

I removed my Ubuntu 10.04 partition from my hard disk with GParted because it didn't install properly and there were no solutions available. After I removed it, I set it up to extend my Vista partition into the unallocated space. It's been going for three hours so far (which I expected) but the progress bar is now stuck. The timer's stopped and everything; it's not increasing infinitely like when your internet cuts out when downloading something, it's just stopped. Here's a screenshot:[URL]..

I know to resist the allure of the Cancel button, but I don't really know what to do here. It's been sitting here for about half an hour with no sign of budging.

Ubuntu Servers :: Allow Logins When There Is A Shutdown In Progress?

Jun 24, 2010

I've got a server that I just use for backing up and archiving files. Since I don't need access to it often I just keep it powered off. I set up wakeonlan and have port 9 and port 22 forwarded to it.

I travel fairly often, and how its set up now, I can send the magic packet to the connection its on and wakeonlan kicks in and powers up the server. Then I can sftp into and access the files I need and then shut it down again in ssh.

It all works good until there's a power outage. For some reason after a power outage wakeonlan doesn't work.

Here's a workaround for this: I can set the system to automatically power up after a power outage. Problem is, the computer could be on for a week or more, wasting power before I log in and turn it off. So the workaround for that is to put a "deadman's switch" where a script will run at startup that will run "shutdown -q -P +5" which will power off the system after five minutes.

After I run wakeonlan I can ssh in and run "shutdown -c" to cancel that shutdown and still use it. If there's a power outage, once power is restored, the system will start up and then automatically shutdown again and be ready for the next wakeonlan signal I send.

Everything is flawless, except one problem. When "shutdown -q -P +5" executes, it disables all new logins. If I'm fast enough I can ssh in before the shutdown program disables logins, but not always. What I want is a way I can run shutdown without disabling logins.

Ubuntu Installation :: Blinking Cursor During Boot - Can't Progress?

Feb 10, 2011

I am attempting to install Ubuntu 64Bit Server 10.04 on a new server.

Server Specs:
Xeon E5620
12GB RAM
2X 160GB 7200 RPM in RAID1 (Onboard Software RAID)
Super Micro X8DTI-8

I am doing a typical install with no special functions on a RAID1 onboard Intel array. I know the array works because I tested it by installing Windows Server 2003 which works fine. The RAID also shows as healthy in the BIOS.

This problem is very difficult to remedy because everything seems to install fine with Ubuntu but when you reboot after the install you get a blinking cursor _ and nothing else. It appears that something happened when loading the OS but it's impossible to get past the blinking cursor because you can't type anything or escape out of it. The only thing that it will register is Ctrl+Alt+Del which will restart the server.

The funny thing is it does not display the typical Sigkill and show processes shutting down. The screen goes black and it restarts only to return to the blinking cursor. I am on my 6th attempt at an install with ubuntu and I am seriously considering switching over to windows unless.

I am almost certain this is a RAID issue because I can load the Ubuntu on 1 drive without any issues but I always get the blinking cursor in the RAID.

Ubuntu :: Natty Update Manager GUI: Not Showing Progress

I don't recall switching these features off and there are no settings to restore them, available within the GUI. Is there another way of restoring this functionality?

If not, is a reinstall the way to go? If so what package(s) need re-installing? And in-case it is a configuration script, what files in my home directory need deleting to ensure a clean reinstall.

Fedora :: Recording Sound Progress

Nov 28, 2009

Well, I've made progress in getting my recording to work.I was running a piece of software called liveice, and this used to work, but now with the current versions of of Fedora I just get noise and other strange problems. I stopped using liveice, and switched to darkice, and now my recordings are working without noise. I hear correct sound and the volume controls are acting sensible.Liveice was broken in a very weird way.The recording meter worked correctly, but the audio it actually recorded was just noise.This program uses OSS, as does darkice.When I record on the SB live, which is dsp2,sometimes I hear sound on it from the other sound card? Is that weird? Why would the input from the sound cards come in mixed like this?I have two sound cards, /dev/dsp and /dev/dsp1. One shows as ICH5/AD1985, and the other is an SB Live 5.1.I currently have Pulseaudio installed and running. I did a yum update just now.This is all with Fedora 12.This system was upgraded from 10 to 11.And then again from 11 to 12.
