I've been working with my OpenVPN server for a while, and I have a rather interesting problem. I need to redirect all client traffic through the tunnel except for a couple IP's that need to be resolvable locally. The way I'm doing this is pushing these routes from the server:

I've hidden my server's IP beginning with 199 for security purposes.What I've gathered.I'm assuming that 0.0.0.0 is a kind of code for "everything," so I'm not sure how I could get this to work, but the general idea is that I need a specific IP range (172.16.*) to be resolvable on the LOCAL NETWORK (of the client) meaning it does not go through the VPN tunnel and the client can connect to 172.16.* locally.Is this possible? Routes can be executed through the command line, server "push" or client config options. Any way to get this to work while still routing other traffic through would do, really.
Additional Info: I have the server running on Debian 64-bit and the client running on Windows 7 (although Vista needs to work as well).Client/server configs can be provided if needed.

My idea is that I could run a sockd proxy internally that redirects traffic to the openvpn tunnel. I could use the *nix "proxifier" application "tsocks" to make it possible for rtorrent to connect through that proxy (as rtorrent doesn't support proxies). I have trouble configuring sockd as my IP inside the VPN changes every time I connect. This is a config file someone said would help:[URl].. As my IP changes at each connect I don't know what to put in that config file. I have no control over the host side config file.
I have two firewalls, one primary (fw1) and one fall-back/backup (fw2). On the LAN side the fw's reside in the same LAN segment. I have a client who wants VPN redundancy. So I configured two VPN tunnels for this client. One via fw1 and a backup via fw2. Since the default gateway on the VPN server points to fw1 only the tunnel via fw1 is established. OpenVPN can't establish a tunnel via fw2 because of the gateway and just sits there waiting...

I can get the VPN server running and everything connects fine from the client. I just don't know how to tunnel all the traffic through the VPS because it involves making the bridge which I'm having trouble with. What exactly am I supposed to put in /etc/network/interfaces?
I currently run openVPN on my Debian box that provides secure ipv4 routing from my laptop to my VPS in a different country (and from there the internet via this box). This works fine. However, id like to sort out ipv6 through this VPN as well as IPV4 and not overly sure how to do it. The remote server itself has native ipv6 configured on device eth0 and it works (ping6, traceroutes all fine,incoming to web servers etc) nicely on dual stack.
How would i go about modifying the config (both client and server if needed) to enable openVPN to act as a tunnel broker to enable the laptop to use the ipv6 through the server as well as the old v4? (the internet connection laptop end will not/does not have native ipv6 from the ISP. Currently im using he-net tunnel broker but id like to run myself through my existing openVPN). VPN config details: Its using UDP, port 1194, creates a TUN interface, redirect-gateway etc and the rest is normal config. Edit:- if it matters the clients are all running windows so i cant use sh scripts to set up stuff client end.
I've set up a Lan-to-Lan (routed) OpenVPN tunnel. For redundancy I want to set up a second VPN tunnel on a fallback gateway/firewall on the client side. Currently, both sides (server/client) know how to route packets across each others physical LAN. So no NAT is used. When the primary gateway (fw1) is connected to the VPN server all traffic runs via the fw1 tunnel. Than when the secondary gateway (fw2) connects to the VPN server and fw1 is still connected all traffic for fw1 will be delivered to fw2 and effectively destroying traffic intended for fw1. This is of course no problem if I first shutdown (fence) fw1, than set up fw2 to use the gateway IP address from fw1 and set up the VPN tunnel to the VPN server. Effectively replacing fw1 with fw2 on the client side.
However, I can't seem to find a decent howto.
I am also exploring the possibility to let both tunnels active and let OpenVPN (or another tool) decide how to route packets back and forth the different LANs. A virtual IP between two gateway's both running a VPN or something similar. This would be the preferred method of course. However, I don't know how to tackle this one but I'm pretty sure there are people out there who are happy to share their 2 cents.
I have 2 linux servers in different locations. I need to setup a ip tunnel. I follow this steps on both servers:

After creating the tunnel everything is ok, but after a time(maybe some hours), I can't ping the other end of the tunnel (ping to IP_Server1 and IP_Server2 is ok all the time; the connection to internet is very reliable). I have tried "ipip" and "gre" mode, but same result. If I ping from two servers the other end of the tunnel, the connection is again established for some hours and ping is working in both directions.(if I ping only from one side the ping is not working) How can I resolve this issue for no longer having to log on both servers to ping the other end of the tunnel? If I use an crondjob to ping the other end of the tunnel at 2 hours everything is working fine for weeks, but I need other solution.
So im trying to get an icmp tunnel setup using ptunnel. When I run it under the same network and use to connect to RDP, it works fine, however when go outside my network and connect in, it does not get anywhere. I can confirm that I have forwarded ICMP packets to the server (if I ping the external ip it will show the status of the server if I unplug it) and that the server is showing signs of registering it.
On the client it just tries to resend the packet "Resending packet with seq-no 0" Over and over Firewall is off for testing so thats not the issue.
Can anyone recommend a good tutorial in how to use/setup a VPN using openVPN? I've registered with strongvpn.com but am a complete newb to setting up VPN on Ubuntu.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to setup OpenVPN to use a third party CA, and its unclear to me how to use the serial and index.txt files that are created when one uses the easy-rsa scripts to setup OpenVPN. If i'm using my own CA can I ignore those? Its also unclear to me how OpenVPN figures out the server.key passphrase. I'd also like to leverage the --tls-verify cmd directive but I am unsure of where to specify it.
What I would like to do is have --tls-verify call a perl script that then verifies that the CN of the certificate the client is passing in matches a cn in an LDAP group. I figure I can do the LDAP group lookup with some easy perl stuff, its unclear to me though if --tls-verify is going to pass in the RDN of the client cert.
I am trying to setup an OpenVPN server using CentOS 5. I ahve installed everything, configs are good, server starts fine. I have generated my certificates using the easy-rsa 2.0 included with OpenVPN. I have downloaded all the certificates to my machine and setup my client to connect. I am having that typical problem everyone seems to have where my client says certificate verify failed. However I can use openssl on the server to verify and it is ok. What am I doing wrong here?

I am trying to setup a VPN on my FC 12 box. Looks like getting openvpn to work behind NAT is as easy as just forwarding the ports. Do I need to forward any specific protocols (GRE, etc)? Also, can I do this with one Ethernet port (IE: RJ-45 jack), or do you recommend a second ethernet port? I could add in another PCI ethernet card if it makes it easier. Anyone know if a single ethernet jack will work or do I need two?
View 2 Replies View RelatedAlright, I've been trying to get this fixed on my own, but I think I am missing a fundamental principle and no amount of scripts or hacks is gonna take place of that. I have adito/OpenVPN installed on my media center. It runs fine and I can access adito in my internal network from other computers just fine. But, the whole point is I want to be able to access it remotely!
Now, I had previously made a run at an external FTP site and failed miserably at that, and I think its all coming down to me not knowing how to configure my own router. I have a Netgear router, I can log into it and under Router status I can get what looks to be my routers external IP address. But if I try to access it at https://XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX:4433 (didn't want to use the default port, 443) I get nothing.
So, my main problems as I understand them are:
1)I need to clear the firewall on my router to allow traffic in/out of my reserved port
2)I need to forward incoming requests on that port to the static internal IP of my media center
3)I really would like a more reliable way to verify the info im getting from my routers admin settings page is actually my external IP, is there a command for this or a website that will tell me?

I am forced to use dhcp because of my router. (although it is a static lease) I think this is where I am hung up. Everything else seems to be working properly though. I am trying to setup an OpenVPN server in bridged mode (Ubuntu 10.04 Lts). The goal is for the clients to be able to reach all the servers behind Openvpn server's lan. I have followed the official OpenVPN guide for Ubuntu 10.04.
My network setup is:
Private lan: 10.90.90.0-255 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 10.90.90.1
Openvpn server ip: 10.90.90.8
Gateway public ip: 79.xxxxxxxxx
I have forward port 1195 to the Vpn server through my gateway firewall.Besides that no other firewall is running.I can connect and ping the server both from windows and ubuntu clients. The difference is that from windows I can reach the private lan but not from ubuntu clients.
I need to execute scripts to setup the bridge after openvpn is restart. Where do I put the scripts? How do I get openvpn to execute them?

This location need full VPN access back to the main office's network.Anyhow we have spent about 3 solid days attempting to make this work without any great success. Here is our network scheme for these two devices.
Network A (Main Office) (OpenBSD using isakmpd)
Network: 172.16.8.0/24
External IP: 1.1.1.1 (obviously not the real IP)[code].....
I can set-up an ssh tunnel from machine A to Machine B:-

I can successfully logon to machine A to Machine B.
what address and port will my tunnel 'appear' on machine B? I want to send a stream back from B to A up the encrypted tunnel, not over the open network.
I'm trying to setup OpenVPN in order to connect back to my home network while traveling for secure browsing and such. However, before I can even start trying to set that up I tried to see if I could open port check my computer through the net. And I'm having a hard time doing that.
As far as I can tell, here are my roadblocks:
1. Is ISP (Qwest) blocking my ports?
2. Is my modem doing the proper port forwarding and firewall?
3. Is my router doing the same?
4. Is my firewall on the computer allowing the request?
To minimize sources of error, I've turned off my local and router firewall and setup my router to forward ports. I'm not to familiar with my modem, but I'm pretty sure that the firewall is turned off by default and I think I've done port-forwarding correctly. But still no success when doing an open port check. At this point I don't know how to diagnose the problem.

I want to configure a VPN over the Internet.I installed the 'openvpn' package, generated the key file, transfered it by a secure way to the client, and setted up the configuration file.
So, in that configuration file I input the IP addresses of the tunneled interfaces. Both IPs are static in the tunnel.
Then, I've heard somewhere that I can assign a dynamic configuration IP for the client. I do this registering a range.
Well, when I tried to change static IP to dynamic IP (changing '192.168.0.2' to '192.168.0.0/24') in the configuration file, the OpenVPN didn't work.
Obviously I don't know what I'm doing, and I really, don't believe that simply changing the IP will make it work, but I tried.
I hope I explained my problem as well.

I'm working remotely at the minute, but have several 'incoming' automatic reverse shells connecting to a dedicated server. This dedicated server does not have X, but several of the 'incoming' shell servers do. Basically, take three machines, laptop, server, client. Laptop and client have X, server does not. All three machines have password-less logins to each other (laptop > server, server > client) and can password-lessly establish a shell.
I've tried ssh -X user@server "ssh -X user@client gui-application" and, no suprise, I'm getting 'Cannot open Display" messages. Does anyone know I nice one-liner for this kind of tunnelling?
i have jsut setup a kvm virtual machine on my server. to connect to the VM from outside of the network i use ssh tunneling. what i would liek to know is if there is any way to create a new user with jsut ssh access. i dont want people to be able to edit files in ~/ or such. jsut need the user to estabilish the connection to the server

ssh -D 1234 example.com
However, this only accepts local connections. I would like other systems on my network to be able to use the proxy on my computer as well.
How can I achieve this? If SSH doesn't have an option itself I imagine it might be possible to have a program proxy the proxy on a different port, but I don't know if there are any common tools to do this.
