KDE's Desktop effects (compositing) has a setting for when to keep window thumbnails. It says that setting this to always "breaks minimization". Does anyone know how it breaks minimization?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm using the Gnome desktop in openSUSE 11.3. I've set the "Command" to gnome-terminal --geometry=80x58 for the Gnome terminal in its Launcher Properties. This opens a terminal of the size I want every time I click it. However, when I right-click the desktop and click "open in terminal" it opens a terminal of a much smaller size and I can't figure out how to correct this. The same thing happens when I click:
File->Open Terminal from a terminal window, and also when
I click File->Open in Terminal from from the File Browser.
Why am I getting a much smaller window and how to fix?
I have a HTPC that launches XBMC standalone automatically, but want to be able to quit and login as a normal Gnome user. I heard that you can set a default Window manager to the user. How do you do that?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have conky running a simple script on my Ubuntu 11.04 install. Running conky from using ALT-F2 is fine, but I have have conky added to the startup list, and when it runs from this, the conky window is different (ie not integrated with desktop layer). It has some shadowing around the edge and it seems to be on a layer other than the desktop. In addition to this, it stops running after a short while. I then run conky from ALT-F2 again and it's appears as I want, and stays there all day. I have included what I think is the relevant code below from my conkyrc. Has anyone had similar issues with a suitable way to resolve the problem?

I have Squeeze running gnome well.It connect to my WFI AP automatically.I installed window maker yesterday .After I enter the window maker desktop, I found no internet connection.I run a network tool shortcut in th eapplication menu.This program is the same of my gnome desktop.I change the setting to make it automatically connect to my AP but in vain.

I've gone though every Dolphin option I can find, and there does not appear to be any setting that affect this. Konqueror DOES have a setting, but it seems to be ignored. I am running Suse 11.3, KDE 4.4.

I have one desktop (Ubuntu 9.10 Minimal) with a USB wireless adapter (wlan1) and an ethernet port (eth0). I want my second desktop (also 9.10 Minimal; connected to desktop 1 via ethernet on eth0) to recieve the connection through desktop 1's wireless. I realize this is rather easy with network-manager, but I am not sure how to go about it through command line.
In 10.4 I had set my default terminal size to my screen width - I type some long commands. After running an update this morning, my terminal comes up in the install default size. Using the preferences dialog, I cannot find the control to set the default width. Has it been removed? I hope I'm looking in the wrong place, but I have a chilling feeling that it's been dropped or perhaps just accidentally commented out.

I configured ( sendmail + Smarthost + pop-before-smtp settings + smtp auth settigns ), today i saw 18000 mail in mailq and somebody sending mail from my mailserver ,as i got reported by ISP for spaming. How someone broke the sendmail + pop-before-smtp settings. i usually access that system through webmin. Is webmin cause to hack password.
Or How someone break sendmail security without even choosing my own user / password spamper settings messages to smart hosts to yahoo / gmail with his own junk user name and password? I stopped sendmail for the time being. Any idea what i should look for and what i should go for its remediation?
I can't seem to find any info on a terminal command that lists the contents of a directory with page breaks so that I can view the contents of a very large folder (such as /usr/bin) because if I use ls, it prints so many names that scrolling up won't even cover all of them. We all know the obvious solution is to use a graphical file browser, but I tend to shy away from depending on graphical utilities simply because command line feels faster.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI like to start Emacs as part of a login script and leave it running for the duration of my login session (which is typically weeks).
I have scripts to call emacs-client which will allow me to use a file-manager or Windows Explorer to locate files and right-click to edit them in Emacs.
I often end up with a lot of emacs windows (frames) open and I like to just be able to close them by clicking on the MS-Windows or KDE X button at the top-right.
The trouble is, if the window is the last one, this will shut down emacs which will lose all kinds of interesting history information.
As a work-around I use C-x 5 0 which won't let me close the last frame but this is often not as convenient as using the mouse
Does anyone know how to configure Emacs so that it can intercept the Window-Close button of the last frame to either request confirmation or simply disallow it?
On MS-Windows, disallowing closing of the last window may cause logoff to hang if emacs is still running but I'm not too worried about that.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a hard drive with a bad PCB board. It stays on when not under heavy load and it will restart if I copy too much data off it. So far I have had good luck doing folders under 500 MB in size if I copy one folder to my good hard drive, wait five minutes, copy another, etc.
If I mount the bad drive and try to copy a folder of several GBs in size it will start and then stop as the hard drive restarts. When I try to mount the drive again Linux says it can't read the superblock. I have several folders with over 30 GB of data in many different folders.
What I am looking for is a way of copying a folder in Linux such that the commands grab the whole folder in chunks with a timed break in-between.
I have a ubuntu server , can advise if I want to change the network setting ( eg. IP address , gateway address etc ) , which one is the configuration file ? for example , if I want to change eth0 setting , what file I should update ?

I have formatted a second internal drive as ext3. It worked fine until I copied (rsynch) my /home to the new drive. Now when I try to delete anything I'm forced to delete immediately or skip the deletion. I also tried moving the /usr/local directory to the second drive and it works fine, it doesn't break the Trash. I tried moving /home back to the root drive and the problem is gone. The second drive again works properly. I can reproduce this. The problem only occurs when I move the /home directory to the new drive.

Hi. I work with large image files. On my ubuntu laptop, the 20 MB files take forever to form the little preview thumbnail icons on the desktop, and everything freezes up until they generate.
I'm poking around my preferences and options, but I can't seem to find a way to tell Ubuntu that I don't want it to form preview icons. Is there some way to turn them off?
Recently due to partitioning and a power failure Ive had to now copy all my backup movies etc. back onto ubuntu as they are corrupted. At the moment the thumbnails of the movies are the generic orange media image and when I replace it with the backup movie, across to ubuntu and refresh the browser, the thumbnail stays the same i.e. it doesn't show a small screen cap of the movie. Is there a way to 'refresh' them properly as it were? I am running Ubuntu 10.10.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI tried to search about this from google and opensuse forums but didn't find any help, so I'm starting this topic.I just updated to OpenSUSE 11.1 with newest gnome and default kernel. The problem is, I don't have video thumbnails any more in nautilus. If I recall correctly, in 11.0 I had them with totem-xine, but now I can't find it in any repos. Added some additional repositories, but still nothing.
If there is not totem-xine available, how to get video thumbnails, I mean like generating automatically every time I open a folder with video files in it.
Where does FireFox store thumbnails? I want to dump them without dumping my cache.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have Ubuntu 9.10, and writing video files to a mounted disk is slow. The reason is every time the buffer is flushed to disk, Ubuntu starts making a new video thumbnail for the file.If I skip the first block that has the RIFF data, then Ubuntu doesn't realize it's a video, and the write speed is about doubled. Then I can write the RIFF data at the end of the transfer (in the appropriate place in the file).I have tried setting an exclusive flock on the file while writing; however, that does not prevent Ubuntu from reading the file while it's being written and generating thumbnails.

Now it's just showing the text inside the file. Im using Firefox 3.6.12, and Ubuntu 10.10 When I go to this page for example:[URL].. and try to open third screenshot in first row... when I click on it, it is zooming in very slowly, and when I press X to exit it.. Firefox becomes unusable for about 5-10 seconds, and then starts to zoom-out the image, very slowly.I have this issue on every site that has big images to zoom, when I say big.I do not have issue with lets say 1600*1200 pixels, but I do with 2500*1600 pixels. My configuration : AMD Athlon 64 bit 3000+; Ati Radeon X600, 2GB DDR2. I have tested in all other browsers on my Ubuntu and its working fine. I have tried safe mode, I have tried new profile... I have tried latest Minefield beta. zooming is very slow everywhere I have tried live CDs Fedora 14, Ubuntu 10.04, Ubuntu 10.10 and all of them have this issue with Firefox. I have tried disabling Compiz... not helping, I have tried disabling Pango in bashrc file, not helping. Firefox on Windows is working fine, and everything else except Firefox is working fine on Ubuntu
