I am trying to access my Red Hat server (home server) from my an external location. I followed the step on how to port forward but I'm having no success. I was wondering if there is something I should be doing on my linux server to all the remote access.
Should I be using vnc?
Is there a safe way for me to configure my server for access from any internet connection as well as from my home/office LAN? I'd like to be able to access file shares, webmin, the router console behind my Gateway for maintenance purposes. Access to Server Desktop itself would be a bonus.
View 12 Replies View RelatedI have a linux box (fedora) with two ethernet cards eth1 and eth2. On eth1 I successfully configured a PPPOE internet connection. Such that from the server I can browse the internet. On eth2 I wired it to a wireless router essentially to provide the wireless cloud. On eth2 I also configured dhcp, such that the Linux box is both PPPOE and DHCP server.However my clients on the LAN cannot access the Internet.
On passing the routing command I get
Destination Gateway Iface
196.44.x.y 0.0.0.0 ppp0
192.168.1.0 0.0.0.0 eth2 (my subnet)
0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 ppp0.
The router (functioning as a wireless access point mainly) has a fixed IP address of 192.168.1.2 and eth2 has IP address 192.168.1.1. The dhcp file running on Linux has been set with option router (Gateway) 192.168.1.1. I cannot figure out how to correctly set the routing table such that my clients on wireless can access the internet cloud. I googled and googled but no solid solution. Any suggestions?
How do I allow webmin for remote access. Currently I can only access it locally from the system.

To work on a shell, I connect to the VNC server, and to access files I host them using apache and open them from my browser. It would be great if I can access my shells via my browser itself instead of using VNC or command prompt.

I'm looking for a way to store an encrypted filesystem on rsync.net which can be mounted and used by multiple clients concurrently - I've considered and experimented with many different ideas, including code...
but all of them are leading me to what looks like a fundamental theoretical problem: a filesystem with concurrent access needs someone to manage it, and who's going to manage it if I can't trust the server? Or refuse on principle to trust the server? There would need to be some trusted entity communicating with every client and making decisions to keep the filesystem and/or block device consistent, right?
Is my understanding correct, or is there any way of achieving what I'm trying to do?
I am having the following problems:I have tried installing vnctightserver on Ubuntu and then installing the viewer on my windows machine but when I try to connect it rejects the connection....I need to remotely access the ubuntu-desktopn my ubuntu server LTS 10.04..... I have tried a number of guides but none are working for me....I have a firewall installed (iptables) but the neccesary ports have been opened up but my server still rejects incoming vnc connections.On a side note I do not have physical access to the server so all setup needs to be done via SSH...

This shows that 636 port is open.But When I am attempting to this Linux Server from one of Windows Desktop it says "LDAP is Down".
I selected LDAPv3 and LDAPv3, hostname and SSL/TLS tried fetching base DN but it dint work.

My internet breaks down on slackware, im able to play an online video game, and sometimes if i'm lucky, use pidgin to get on Gchat. However other than that, I cannot access the internet. I've tried multiple browsers, resetting my router, and resetting my modem. It's connected through an ethernet cord, and I am getting an IP from my router.
My first thought was that it was a bandwidth limit, but I'm at my house, on a windows computer typing this right now. I'm not an expert on bandwidth caps so maybe it is this. The weird thing is,I have a laptop running slackware as well. Even over wireless it doesnt work.

I have an acer aspire one notebook (I gather firefox 2 is interwoven on the system?). Anyway, keep pressing firefox icon and it churns over put nothing happens. I found the following advice on another site: (Sorry this is so long, but I wanted to give you as much info for you to help me)
Press Alt+F2 to show the Run program window. Check Run in terminal, leave the input field blank, and click Run to open a terminal. If you're not familiar with the Linux command line just follow the instructions step by step. The easiest way is to simply paste the commands into the terminal with Ctrl+Shift+V. Most of them will only give feedback if an error occurs.
The first command uses wget to download Firefox 3.6 from an official mirror. You can edit the lang variable at the end, in this case en-US, if you'd like another language. All available languages are listed here, just hover over the download link to get the language code from the status bar.
wget -N [url]
The next step extracts the just downloaded file and modifies a link to point to it. In a few cases a connection refused error message may be triggered by sudo, which is not an error but a bug in sudo and can be safely ignored.
The next step links all plug-ins (not to be confused with extensions) to it.
Launch the profile manager using the command below. Create a new profile, name it anything you like and select it. If you want to keep your bookmarks export them via the bookmark manager first. You can then delete the old default profile.
firefox -profilemanager -no-remote
As a bonus you can also change the icon to the official Firefox icon.
Finally reboot the AA1 to make the desktop aware of the new icon and browser location.
However when I try the above I get the following responses at each point:
I do now have a new icon on the desktop! but still no internet.
I have installed Mint 8 on my HP Presario lap top. When booted up using XP I can connect to the internet wirelessly with no problem. But, when I boot up with Mint 8 I receive a msg that there is no connection to the internet. I then tried by hooking up to the router with a cable and it still shows "not connected to the internet" msg. I tried rebooting while hooked up with the cable and same result.
