Recently,I am learnning about the LFS and I can not understand the relationship between the kernel and file system !!It is so annoyed because I want to understand the LFS deeply.who can describe the relationship between them!and who can give me a simple example?
View 1 RepliesOn a Debian system, there are packages called uswsusp and hibernate. The former contains a program named s2disk, the latter contains a program called hibernate. Superficially, these both do the same thing: the suspend the machine to disk. Usually, this works fine, but since I'm often using Debian testing and there are lots of changes in kernel and other packages (I assume), somethings this breaks. But then, when one of these programs doesn't work, sometimes the other works. Often, hibernate works when s2disk doesn't.annoyingly, however, the "Suspend" or "Hibernate" buttons in the graphical user interfaces (e.g., LXDE, KDE) appear to be wired up to the s2disk program, so when that breaks I have to use hibernate manually.
So, what is the difference between these packages? Interestingly, the hibernate package "recommends" uswsusp, but the package description says that it "smartly puts your computer to sleep ... using one of the various methods available in the kernel". So apparently it can fall back to something else when the s2disk method fails? And if hibernate is more powerful, why wouldn't the GUIs use it instead?

in my windows7 laptop, I installed a virtualbox 4.0 then Fedora 14 as OS. Can I transfer the files from Linux system to windows syatem? I mean can I create a relationship between two OS like mapping network drive?

I use the default .config file and just change a few things and then run the make command. After I replace the kernel and reboot the system the password comes up for the encrypted filesystem and it does not take my password for some reason. what I need to do to get this working?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just rebuild the kernel for slackware 13, everything works, but root file system which is ext3 is mounted as ext2. Normally I've build ext3, ext4 and so on as modules, not in the kernel... but if I do this, then the kernel mounts the file system as ext2, which is build in the kernel. I also modified rc.modules so I can make sure that ext3,ext4,jbd are loaded, but it doesnt work.

Has been for about a month, but all of a sudden as of yesterday I have no sound, I am seeing IRQ interupts on boot, During boot I am seeing file system is not clean, , and swap space is being used for the first time while doing normal task, etc. These are 2 new hard drives in RAID 1 with ReiserFS. I should have used a newer FS but thats a whole other argument.
Anyways here we go.
The system is Debian Lenny amd64
Physical RAM 4GB + 6GB swap

Could you please explain the relationship between the languages?For one, is C writing assembly when you compile, does every piece of code end up assembly/hex? Is there a way to convert (?port?) between them?I don't understand much at all of them yet, but I've seen examples where it looks like they are interacting, and an understanding of all of them looks to be important?

What i meant was, in a multicore system with 'n' number of cpu's, will each cpu have its own linux kernel installed, or will all cpu's have a copy of the same kernel image? Another question regarding multicore is kernel tracing. Since tracing works at the kernel level, then should i perform tracing for each cpu's seperately or kernel tracing can be performed as a whole for all cpu's put-together?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI work for a company that makes portable devices running Linux and I was recently asked to make the underlying file system read-only for "security" purposes. Since the distribution is based on LinuxFromScratch, I know that very little writing happens at run time. So, even if the device runs on a usb flash device, I doubt that putting the root file system RO will be that beneficial. I am actually more concerned about a process actually breaking because it cannot open a file in RW mode than a process going rogue and filling the root file system with log files, etc. I'd really like to ear what kind of advantages disadvantages there really is with read-only file-systems.

so, I shrunk my recovery in Windows 7 successfully, and booted into my Fedora 12 live cd to run Gparted, and move the partitions so that the free space could go towards fedora, I did such, and then I couldn't expand the partition to my dismay. Next, I woke up this morning, tried to boot to fedora to run SSH, grub loaded, but when I tried to boot fedora, I got the "File system check failed" error, and when I tried 7, it just went to a blank screen with a single "_" in the top left-hand corner.
As in windows all the delted items will got to RecycleBin is there any such thing in linux.

Can we retrive the file which got removed from file system(using rm command)
I have an ntfs partition that I wish to access as a normal user(non-root). For this I did the following. As root I created a folder /windows and did a chmod 777 -R on /windows. Then I added the following line to /etc/fstab

Now, the partition is mounted alright but the problem is that when any other user (non-root) creates a files in /windows (say by executing touch newfile) the newly created file has the owner and group set as root. The non-root user can create the file and he can also delete the file, however, he cannot change the permissions of the file and also the owner:group is always set as root:root. How do I get across this problem, i.e. how do I mount a partition, so that a non-root user can also change the permissions and ownerships of the files he creates.
I used the ext3 format when I formatted my partition prior to installing Ubuntu10.10. I had accidentally deleted a file and began the process to get it back. It wasn't critical but helpful to recover the file. To make a long story short I ran into to some unexpected road blocks. I tried to use PhotoRec to get the job done but with no success.
I'm just looking down the road in the event I might have to recover something important.If it would be better going back to the Fat32 file system I would rather do it sooner than later. Just as a side note I am dual booting between linux and windows.
Do you know what's relationship between ethx and physical net cards? such as i have three net cards in the PC, named A, B, C. In which config file i could know that eth0 -> A, eth1 -> B, and eth2 -> C. Would the mapping relationship change after reboot? Is there any method i could change the mapping?

The situation is I removed the ADSL card from my desktop as I have no use for it for the moment. I am guessing that the motherboard is still trying to detect the Sangoma ADSL card. What is the best way to resolve this problem, uninstall the drivers for the ADSL card or change the settings in the system configuration files?
The system is not affected by this removal, just get prompted regularly about this error as configured in the kerneloops client.
I bought a new SD card which I intend to put some MP3s on - except that I can't write to it because it tells me the destination is Read Only. No-probs thinks I: I'll just reformat it.

Various chmod commands all result in Read-only file system. I tried umount then mount commands, but it couldn't find it to mount once I'd unmounted it using the same /media/ file path (I assume it's the only one).
My server is running Ubuntu. I have no problem adding a windows XP to the domain. I however have a problem with windows 7 laptop. I keep getting the following error

My Redhat Enterprise Linux 4 with 6x partitions (/, /boot,/home, /usr, /var, /tmp) of 6.0 GB IDE Hardisk was working quite fine. I decided to create LVM on /home and /var partitions but due to some errors occured and I delete the /home partitions. That's why partition table altered.
