General :: Folder Gone Missing On HD With All Files In It

May 3, 2010

I have an external 2.5" eSATA drive which up till now was using via USB2.0 connection and was working perfectly. The drive is pretty new - I think less then a year and it's a Seagate too of which I think to be more reliable although still consumer based.I had connected the drive to FreeBSD 8.0 32bit on my server in ReadOnly mode using ext2fs in order to stream the information across my network.

Plugging the drive into Linux recently yielded everything performing fine, as the drive stores all the seasons of a TV show I started recognizing that things where outa whack when the linearity of the episodes stopped being sequential and previous episodes started playing when clicking an incremented episode.

The drive is formatted with the ext3 filesystem and I have already attempted to run e2fsck -p on it which showed up as the drive being 'clean'.I then attempted to use my notebooks eSATA Express card to connect the drive via the eSATA cable as I have found it to be more reliable then the USB2 / ext3 solution which I've had my fair share of problems with. However, the drives TOC or Journal maybe damaged by whatever reason so I will need to repair that.I stumbled across Magic Rescue and so far have compiled it but not used it as I wanted to be sure first if there was another way to do this.

General :: Missing CPU Core On Boot?

Jun 11, 2010

I'm running Linux on an Intel Core 2 Duo processor. When I apply power to my computer, it boots into one core but appears to leave the other one idle. On the screen, it prints:

....
SMP: Allowing 2 CPUs, 1 hotplug CPUs
.....

I can confirm that only 1 CPU is active by logging in and examining /proc/interrupts and /proc/cpuinfo. After issuing a "reboot" command, the screen shows:

...
SMP: Allowing 2 CPUs, 0 hotplug CPUs
...

So, when I do a cold boot, I one get 1 CPU. When I do a warm boot, I get both CPUs. This is a problem for me because I'm running Linux on an embedded board and I need both CPUs to be running.

I've played around with BIOS settings, the boot string, kernel configuration, and CPU hot plugging. I can't seem to find a way to get both processors running without booting the system twice.

I thought that the CPU hot plugging path showed some promise but I can't seem to get that feature working on my system. The first issue is that the Linux documentation doesn't seem to match with what I'm seeing. It states that you should be able to go into /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpuX/ and write a zero or a one to the file labeled 'online' to disable it or enable it. When I go to /sys/devices/system/cpu I only see a directory for cpu0. There isn't a directory for cpu1.

After a reboot, I do see two directories int /sys/devices/system/cpu (cpu0 and cpu1). At this point, it won't let me 'offline' the second processor. The echo command gives me an error. (By the Way: the 'online' file in each cpuX directory has read only permissions.) This error occurs after I've changed the permissions on the file to read/write.

I confirmed that the following parameters are set in my .config file: CONFIG_HOTPLUG, CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU, CONFIG_SMP, CONFIG_SUSPEND_SMP

I've done searches on google until my eyes popped out and can't find much information. I see others have had similar problems but they all seem to link back to ACPI in BIOS. I've already played with all of those settings and I didn't see any effect. One reason I don't think it's a BIOS problem is because a warm boot (reboot) seems to 'fix' it.

I've tried different kernels, different distributions, and different computers. I see similar behavior in all configurations. I feel like I'm missing something fundamental.

General :: Any Way To Diagnose Tar When Files Missing On Extract?

Aug 3, 2010

I have tar files where I archive about 250 files, each about 80 Mb, without compression. In a few cases tar is only returning some of the files. For example, when doing an extract of the file using:
tar -xvf 356.tar
I got only 103 files, when it should return 255 files, but tar does not give me an error. Furthermore, the tar archive is 15.8 Gb while the extracted folder is just 6.4 Gb. The tar files were created using:
tar -cvf 356.tar 356
where 356 is the name of the folder. All the steps where done in the same machines, under Ubuntu 6 and newer. Any ideas if there is a way to recover the files that are not being extracted?

General :: Apache2 Compiled Modules Missing?

Jan 22, 2011

i couldn't find anything on google. So here is my problem: It's Debian GNU/Linux. I installed apache2 a few weeks ago, but due to some work I couldn't go on installing further things. Today I installed php5 and mysql. Everything seemed to work fine. I loaded an existing MyBB Board and WordPress Site onto the server and imported the mysql db. I can open the sites and login. However, there are problems. I think my problems are due to the compiled modules. Some are missing. I checked several sites. They all give me this listing:

Code:
apache2 -l
Compiled in modules:
core.c
mod_access.c

[Code]...

What should I do? How can I get the missing modules? Do I have to install apache again (how? remove - install? install what?)? Step-by-step instructions would be kind, because I don't know a lot about unix systems.
