Obviously this one is not formatted right... But I want to know how I can add a new NTFS partition to be able to reinstall Vista. I don't care if I have to delete Fedora... I'll just reinstall later using more attention.

I have the following partition setup. I would like to know how can I convert the logical partition sda6 to a primary partition.

tar -xvf ntfsprogs-2.0.0.tar.gz
chown root.root -R ntfsprogs-2.0.0
cd ntfsprogs-2.0.0
./configure
make && make install
Still I have failed to mount ntfs partition with this command..
mount -t ntfs /dev/hda1 /mnt
or
ntfs-3g /dev/hda1 /mnt
The error is .................
mount: unknown filesystem type 'ntfs'
I am using RHEL5.4 and kernel is 2.6.18-164.el5

Feb 22, 2011i am trying to access a drive - M which is a logical one.i have formatted it with ext3 file system and i would like to access the drive all of 30gb from Virtual-Box's Linux os.i am using RHEL 5.5 server in Virtual bOx on a Win XP Os.i have also tried various mount command but at times i get this protocol failed error,Also tried changing the default name given by the Vbox for the drive and tried mounting the same but no success.
i am able to mount the other drives-NTFS partition even automatically since i have edited my /etc/fstab for this.that works but this partition which i created using the paragon partition software is of type ext3 which I am not able to mount

Oct 12, 2010I was attempting to format a flash drive, and well, used the wrong sdX device. I've run DiskInternals Partition Recovery tool, and all my files are still there (you have to pay $139 to have it restore the files). Is there any way using tools in linux to restore the ntfs partition/files? It was a single disk with the partition taking the entire drive. I've tried mounting it with the -t option, but it says invalid ntfs signature. Man, two lessons the hard way, make sure you backup (duh) and be careful what you type as root.

Dec 28, 2010I'm multi-booting with Windows 7 x64 and (at least) Linux Mint. Because I hadn't yet made a backup of my MBR, when I installed Linux Mint on a logical partition, I told the installer to put GRUB on the partition instead of in the MBR. This turned out to be useless, as I need to use GRUB from a boot disk to get into the GRUB I installed. Before installing it in the MBR, I'd like to get it out of the partition, preferably without wiping and reinstalling Linux. I don't relish the prospect of going through two layers of GRUB when I want to boot Linux. How do I get it out, or what other options are available to me?

Aug 2, 2009I apologize if this has been asked a hundred times, but I searched through the threads and posts here and did not find an answer that helped me at all.What is the exact process of booting from a logical partition?
I have read several things, and all are confusing to me and I can't find a good answer.Here's what I know and an example:I've read this is easily possible.some things I've read said something about it being complex and that you have to chainload. Some things I've read said it's very easy, but it has something to do with booting from the extended partition. Others said, no you use the logical partition itself. I can't clear up what anyone is talking about..When using openSUSE 11.1, the Live CD and trying to install it. It will give me problems when trying to boot from a logical partition, not to mention I don't want to do something wrong and add data or anything where it shouldn't be. I don't know what I'm doing, at all, and I can't understand people's explanations of this.
When using openSUSE, you can choose (when configuring GRUB using the graphical installation) "boot from extended partition" and use "custom boot partition: sda(1,2,3,whatever)" and it will work. If you choose to boot from the logical partition only, and don't check "boot from extended partition", it will say "no operating system found" when booting. What exactly is happening here, I'm completely lost. Choosing "boot from extended partition" can't cause any problems of any kind, can it? What is the proper way of doing things in this situation, what is really happening?
General :: Possible To Move Ubuntu Primary Partition To Logical / Extended?
Nov 5, 2010I'm currently dual booting Windows 7 64bit and Ubuntu 10.10 each on primary partitions. Then on the other 2 partitions I have the manufacturer recovery partition (which I am not sure I should remove...), and then a partition for storage and files. Now I want an Arch Linux installation on the hard drive, but obviously I cannot create a new primary partition because I already have 4. I found out that linux can run from a logical partition (which you can have multiple of)..However I do not want to format my Ubuntu partition and I'd prefer to keep the data on there all intact. Is there a way to move my Ubuntu installation (on the primary partition) to an extended partition where I could put multiple logical partitions for multiple linux installations?

I have tried testdisk but didn't really grok what i was doing. I successfully moved a "Windows Recovery" partition to the end of my hard-drive, immediately after the drive's Extended Partition.

With a separate /home partition, you may upgrade or reinstall Fedora without erasing user data files." seems to suggest I have to create a separate physical partition and assign that to /home. But reading elsewhere it seems to suggest logical volume acts like a partition. My goal is to make it easy in case fedora is hosed and I have to re-install it without affecting /home where my cirtical data resides. Given above do I need to create a separate physical partition or I am just fine?
I have a second hard disk that originally had windows and all my data. Windows is hosed but I can see my data from within Fedora and Windows is gone and I created created new partition in its place which used ot be the C:/ drive appears as 53 Gb filesystem. My data which was originally D drive appears as 215 GB filesystem. As given in [URL] I want to create a new logical volume in 53 Gb filesystem which I want to use as space for virtual disk to install guest OS's in KVM. Oct 9, 2010I started withsda1 windows restore sda3 extendedsda5 swapsda6 /mandrivasda7 /SUSE 11.3
sda8 /SUSE 11.2I then made some changes with gparted (from PartedMagic 5.5) to create an ntfs partition to simulate a condition where someone may want to delete that partition and use the free space for linux. I then deleted that partition, sda2 then sda5 (swap) and taking some screenshots, went about resizing partitions to use that free space and then recreate swap. the intention being to create a basic guide on how to go about this.I have previously only had my swap at the end of the extended partition, deleting itand recreating it later had caused little trouble.I realize that a resize/move operation would have been a better choice.What I was not expecting was the partition number changes that occurred.

Now everything goes well, opensuse installs but the problem is that I cannot give user full rights to ntfs folders. I have used graphical file permission methods n terminal chown n chmod methos but still permissions revert back to root.

General :: Making A Bootable Partition On A Compact Flash?
May 4, 2011I have never worked with Linux before but as part of my new job I need to format and install a program on a compact flash card. I have followed our procedure to the T but when i install the card I get a No bootable partition error. Here is what I'm doing. I go into Gnome terminal and change to my directory to "cd dcmsetupdir" (this may not be important but I want to give as much info as I can. Then I type "sudo ./format_cf". once this is complete (no errors detected), I type in "sudo ./install_cf" this seems to install correctly but when I boot up the unit with the card in I get the no bootable partition error.

Nov 28, 2010I wanted to migrate from ubuntu karmic to the latest ubuntu 10.10, but i already have a lots of data on my hard disk in home directory. i was thinking if it is possible to transfer all the data to one directory and make a separate partition of it , so tht when i install a fresh copy of ubuntu 10.10 on my system i need not format this new partition ,which contains al my data.is it possible tht this new partition will automatically get mounted on the new system without the need to execute commands from terminal every time i start my system. if there is any other alternative way for solving this problem i would follow tht too.the reason for my migration is that karmic is really troubling me a lot and so many applications including my sound device have failed to work and i am not able to rectify them..
