General :: Locking Keys Not Screen Or Mouse?

Sep 15, 2010

My wife just moved onto Ubuntu after dumping Vista and she loves it! Only thing is that our 10 month old son adores smashing his hands on the keyboard when attempting to talk to his grandparents over Skype. In Vista, we downloaded a small software that locked the keyboard but not the mouse or screen. This locking could be toggled via a system tray icon.

Is there something similar that is available for Linux, specifically Ubuntu 10.4? If anyone knows of a solution, do let me know.

General :: Locking The Screen From Login Terminal?

Dec 29, 2010

So I've got this home file server, and I want to display certain stuff using:

top
who
a tcpdump of snort logs, scrolling in real time

I want it to display on the screen using a split terminal screen, so all of the information shows on one display, but I do not want it to be vulnerable to a local attacker. Is there any way I can have these things start up at login, but prevent that user from doing anything other than viewing this information?

General :: Use Keys For Mouse Buttons / Alternative To AHK?

On windows I have an autohotkey script which:
- Only works when caps lock is on

- Allows holding the keys down (for dragging objects)
Is there an easy way of duplicating this functionality in linux?

Software :: General X Setting (NOT WM-specific) To Map Keys / Mouse Buttons?

Apr 24, 2010

I'm trying out various windows mgrs and I'd love to be able to preserve certain key mappings...
...but what's REALLY important are the MOUSE KEYS!!!!!!!
I use the mouse left-handed. I can set that in Gnome or KDE easily, but if I go into, say Ratpoison, it's un-set again.
Is there a system-wide (or as close to it as possible) mouse setting?

General :: Bind Certain Keys To Change Screen Brightness

Jul 19, 2010

I am using Ubuntu linux, and I want fn + up key and fn + down key to change the brightness instead on fn + F4 and fn + F5. I've tried looking for something in the Keyboard Shortcuts menu, but there is no command or key specified to do that. I could make a custom key shortcut, but I can't find the command to change the brightness. Is there a way to make another key do this? My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1545.

Ubuntu :: Can't Configure Screen Locking In Xubuntu

May 15, 2011

I'm having difficulty disabling the screen lock feature when resuming from suspend in Xubuntu 11.04 x64. The screen lock seems to be implemented in xscreensaver, so I disabled the screen saver in the Settings Manager. This did not work. In the 'Power Manager' section of Settings Manager, I unchecked "lock screen when going for suspend/hibernate' and this did not work. I found a possible workaround in a bug report that seems to describe the problem I'm having: [URL] but the solution offered there (install gconf-editor and disable screen lock from there) did not work. The bug report states that the problem was fixed in xfce4-utils 4.4.2-1ubuntu1, but from what I can tell the version of that package in 11.04 is newer than that. The only thing that seems to work is to completely uninstall xscreensaver

Fedora :: How To Fix Mouse Locking Up In Fedora 13 Running As Vmware Guest?

Jun 2, 2010

I'm happily running Fedora 13 as a guest OS in VMWare 3.0.1, except that it has one little issue.Sometimes the mouse would get terribly confused. It generally happens when I hit the mouse scroll wheel or when I move a window around very quickly. After that the left mouse button would stop working...

Anyway I found an easy workaround which I thought I'd share.Just hit 'enter unity' on the VMWare player menu. Then you can immediately exit unity again. This somehow resets the mouse into its normal state...

OpenSUSE Hardware :: How To Turn Off Mouse Keys

Oct 19, 2010

After upgrading to 11.3, from 11.2, I apparently have only one nagging problem: the numpad doesn't work. After doing some research I found the problem is obviously that mouse keys is on; shift-numlock fixed it. But, I can't find any place in YaST or KDE System Settings to change that. Where did it go?

I did look in the xorg.conf.d folder and checked all the files there, but no luck.

So where do I find this setting?

General :: F3 - F5 Keys Incorrectly Behaving As Audio Keys / Remap Them To Original Meaning?

Apr 17, 2010

I don't know if this is a configuration issue or a hardware issue, but I have a Kinesis Advantage USB keyboard and for some reason the F3-F5 keys aren't responding as they used to. They don't respond to anything and, when I tried using F5 on Emacs, it said <XF86AudioNext> is undefined, so I guess it's a weird mapping problem.

Any idea how I could remap them to the original meaning?

I'm running Debian (Squeeze) and I have a toshiba portege m700. One of them is for rotating the screen, and another is for switching to external display. I want to remap the remaining three to control, alt and super so that I can use shortcuts with the stylusThe problem is, when I used showkey to find out the key codes, I found out that each button generates more than one key code:Button 1:

key 126 press >> super_r, although this is distinct from the actual super key (125)
key 7 press >> 6
key 7 release
key 126 release

OpenSUSE :: Stopping The Screen Saver And Stopping The Screen Locking?

Jan 23, 2011

In December I finally filled up my root partition and broke Suse 11.1. I therefore resized my partitions and installed Suse 11.3 on /root. I didn't not touch my /home partition.

I notice that when I leave my machine and come back the screen has locked. I have tried to turn off the screensaver, but it hasn't worked. I have Googled, but unfortunately the screen shots don't look like what I have and the instructions to stop this do not seem to match what I am seeing on the screen.

Is there a way to do this via the command line?

Ubuntu :: Keyboard Number Keys On The Right Side - Including Backslash - Plus - Minus Stopped Working And Mouse

Mar 23, 2011

1) Keyboard number keys on the right side, including backslash, plus, minus, etc. stopped working. The rest of the keyboard seems okay. It's not just this keyboard, either, because I plugged in my other keyboard and it has the same problem.

2) My mouse seems to have an intermittent problem in which it stops working for a few seconds or a minute. I can move it around the screen but I'm not able to click on anything. Sometimes if I wait long enough, it returns to normal. If I logout using the keyboard commands and log in again, it seems okay, at least until the next occurrence.

I'm running 10.04 LTS Lucid Lynx. I installed a kernel update a couple of weeks ago (2.6.32-29) but I've gone back to -28 in the hope that it would solve the problem. It has not. Is there a software package I need to reinstall or some other way to revert keyboard and mouse settings to defaults?

General :: Stuck At Log In Screen With Mouse And Keyboard Not Functioning

Mar 26, 2011

I am COMPLETELY new to Linux.I started a computer class recently and I started teaching myself PERL.My teacher had mentioned to me that it's far better for some reasons (he did not elaborate) to write code in a Unix system. So I got Ubuntu 10.10.I installed it along side my windows 7.After I setup my windows (had to reformat the disk) I decided to boot up into Ubuntu to set that up. I installed the necessary drivers that it required, and the updates. I was asked to restart the system so I did so.

It did not even shut down or restart my system.I waited patiently 15 minutes...30 minutes 1 hour... until I finally decided to hit the reset button on my PC. Then when I'd boot back in to Ubuntu afterwards, it would stay at the log in screen and my mouse wouldn't budge and nor is my keyboard recognized by Ubuntu.Im really frustrated and I've been searching for answers for the whooole day and I just can't seem to find something well explained. Im completely new to Ubuntu so I don't know where to enter any code in a cmd line or such.

1)Reformatted my harddrive to install windows 7 on it
2)Set up windows 7 and then booted into Ubuntu.
3) Set up Ubuntu and installed necessary drivers and updates
4) Reset the computer and waited for an hour for the reset to happen but nothing happened.
5) Manually reset my pc and booted into ubuntu
6) Stuck at log in screen with mouse and keyboard not functioning (unable to use ubuntu).
