Ubuntu :: Radar / Weather Program - Active Storm Spotter Or Chaser

Sep 1, 2011

To clarify, I am a windows user who is trying to free himself from the world of Microsoft. With this, there are a lot of programs that I run on my windows machine for tracking and monitoring severe weather that moves in to our area. As it turns out, every program that I run on my windows machine has zero support for linux. I already know about WINE & VM to run these particular programs, but what I am more interested in is seeing if anyone out there (preferably an active storm spotter or chaser) knows of any great programs for Ubuntu that can provide the same functionality and level of detail as say StormLab, InterWARN, or GRlevelX. I use my laptop heavily while out storm spotting for our city and such, so I need programs that are reliable and accurate. For now, I am still stuck using my windows machine when I go out for these storms, but I would really like to try and use Ubuntu on my next rainy day adventure.

Seems like it would be troublesome to authorize root access on Live Media or have sudo allow commands such as pvcreate, lvcreate, vgcreate, especially if the hard disk is not encrypted.

Ubuntu :: Gnome (and Docky) Weather-applet Dependant Of Internet Connection?

Jun 8, 2010

I had experienced a annoying feature relative to both the Gnome Weather-applet (the one linked to the clock) and the weather-desklet from Docky : With the same laptop (working under Lucid Lynx), they work perfectly fine when I am using them from work but never stop to update (in the case of the Docky desklet) or didn't show up (for the gnome weather-applet) when I am using them from home. In both case, I am using a WiFi connection and no proxy.

Has everyone else experimented such a problem ? If so, which parameters should I adjust to solve this trouble? PS : Wherever the place I am, I can access with a web-browser to the websites providing the weather forecast (iGoogle, weather.com and weather.underground).

General :: How To Fullscreen Application Across Both Monitors Of Dual Head Display

Feb 3, 2011

I have two Ubuntu 10.4 machines (and Ubuntu continues to hide more and more xorg.conf config such that I no longer know where to find it). One is a laptop running dual headed - DP1 is the internal screen, and VGA1 is an external monitor; both are running at 1600x900. The other machine is a desktop running both VGA1 and HDMI1 (which is actually a display port with a DVI adapter) at 1600x900. So in both instances my desktop is 3200x900. I run a VNC server on the laptop and connect to it (via SSH tunnel) from the desktop - when I press the full screen hot key, I get a 1600x900 view of the remote machine on one monitor, and half of my local desktop on the other monitor - the "full screen" only expands to fill one local monitor.

Normally this is exactly what you want when you full screen a web browser, email client, or other application. I'm sure there's some X magic to make it clear what a full screen actually entails, and the vnc client application is just dutifully accepting what it's told. While I would like to keep the normal full screen behavior for regular applications, but when I'm VNCing to another 3200x900 machine, I'd really like full screen to stretch across both local displays. Resizing the window to be "close" isn't quite good enough since I still have local panels at the top and bottom of one display (though I can set them to autohide), plus the VNC client application window border (since it doesn't appear to respect -notitle).

Is there any good way to have X lie to a single application about the "full screen" size? Can I get it to lie to all applications? xrandr --noprimary appears to have no effect.

General :: Log Or Live Data That Discloses The System Calls An Application Makes?

I want a log or live data that discloses the system calls an application makes. I have used strace but can't find a guide for it that is decent. I'm interested in knowing the calls made after user intervention like opening a menu and so on. If you run (strace application_name) it is static. What good is this? When does strace make this file? When is this log produced?

General :: Setup Media Server To Stream Video Via The Internet?

Nov 27, 2010

setup a media server in Linux which streams video over the internet? Is it easy to do this? I want a server that will actually encode video in real time to allow it to stream over sometimes slow or unreliable networks. Basically, I want a server that works on the internet. I have a directory with a bunch of video files, and want to make this accessible to myself remotely. For other situations, I found great and useful software (such as the PS3 media server). I'd like to find something equally as useful for streaming video over the internet.

General :: Internet Through Live CD?

Apr 4, 2010

I have recently joined a Chinese company for a short assignment which might last for about an year. Though my job is mostly non-computer based but I have to use the computers there for basic computing, esp. for internet access. As all the computers in that company are in Chinese language . . its very difficult to work on them. So, I thought of using a live cd based Linux to solve my problem without disturbing the OS (chinese win xp) installed on the computers. My first preference was Puppy. It ran well on the computers but some how internet was not accessible. I tried its network wizard and tried DHCP but in non of the cases it solved the problem. I later tried an Ubuntu live cd also but it didnt work.

Any other live cd ? I am on leave these days . . . so wish to learn abt all this and equip my self b4 i join !

Ubuntu Networking :: Connect To The Internet As Per Normal And Use Any Internet Application?

Feb 1, 2010

On this box I have Two seperate Ubuntu installations. Recently in both I seem to be having the same problem. I initially can connect to the internet as per normal and use any internet application. But after a period of time, sometimes just minutes, sometimes hours, even though the icon says connected, I cant update pages or send emails etc because there is no actual connection. My Physical connection is good I know - My Ubuntu laptop and Windows gamming PC connect fine during this period. So

Does this suggest an intermittent hardware fault or is there some thing in Ubuntu I can check to make sure that it is setup correctly and nothing has been corrupted? I am a lay PC person - I dont really want to be command prompting - Plug & Play and Point & Click is my limit.

"unable to find persistent home media".I don't have a ton of save info on the live user account but I would like to be able to fix this type of problem.

Ubuntu :: Media PC Won't Boot / Display To HDTV Till Lcd Monitor Is Plugged In

Mar 3, 2010

I am trying to build a media pc, and successfully so till this one little/big problem. I want to be able to turn on my tv, and pc, and have the pc display onto the TV. Ports used are HDMI(pc)->HDMI(HDTV)

But for some reason Ubuntu will not fully load with just the TV plugged in (all i get is a black screen, not even a "no signal" message).Once a LCD monitor is plugged into the VGA port. Then I see a glossy white Ubuntu symbol on the LCD monitor. Then the Ubuntu loading screen appears on both the LCD monitor AND the TV. in mirror mode. And I can see the desktop on both monitor AND TV.

I am using an ATI RAEDON HD 4200 chipset that is on the mobo. I have downloaded the proprietary drivers and installed them. A few things I have tried are the instructions on this page, finding my modeline using a modeline calculator and also going off of a suggestion from a thread on this website, stripping down my xorg file so that the Xserver would autodetect it. Which i think I did wrong because after that, it wouldn't display on TV at all.
