Ubuntu :: Lovinglinux - Portable Version Of Firefox On USB Flash Drive Is Really SLOW

Jul 22, 2010

I have a portable version of Firefox on my USB flash drive. It is really SLOW. I have turned off all of the disk-caching options and have even set it to not remember my history. I only have three addons: NoScript, Adblock+, CS Lite. I could even get rid of CS Lite and manage my cookies totally manually if it means I'll have a faster GUI. Almost every time I interact with Firefox in any way I have to wait a few seconds and I get that damned spinning beach-ball (did I mention it's the OSX version?).

General :: Installing OpenSUSE 11.2 - Using A Flash Drive

Jan 6, 2010

I have a bit of a "problem" you can say. I have a computer with no cd/dvd drive nor a floppy drive. It does however have USB ports and ability to boot from LAN or USB-FDD, USB-CDROM, USB-HDD in the Bios setup menu.

I've been searching for a way to install openSUSE 11.2 on this computer using a flash drive I have but I'm not being able to even after following a number of suggestions from posts on the internet.
Anyone have any idea on what I should do?

General :: Unable To Mount Portable Hard Drive On Ubuntu?

Apr 5, 2010

My portable hard drive (WD My Passport), which used to work correctly now does not automount on my Ubuntu system. It does work on a Windows machine or even when plugged into WD HD TV, which is a Linux based device. There's one NTFS partition spanning the whole drive. When I plug the disk in, I see the following in dmesg:[269259.504631] usb 1-2.2: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 20[269259.604674] usb 1-2.2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choiceHowever it does not mount in GNOME and I don't see it when I type:sudo fdisk -lAny suggestions why this might be? I repaired the partition using chkdsk on Windows, so the issue is probably not filesystem related.

Ubuntu Installation :: Installing From Flash Drive ?

Jan 10, 2010

Yesterday I installed Ubuntu Linux from a flash drive, and it worked perfectly. While I was on it, everything froze so I restarted, but when I restarted, the window to install Ubuntu from flash drive, or run it from flash drive, etc popped up even though I had already installed it. I chose to install it, but it wouldn't work. I tried to turn the computer on without the flash drive in, but it said to insert system disk, etc. I went into the Advanced BIOS and it was already set to first boot from harddrive.

Only one person I know of has been able to help me connect it to the internet and I can't find him anywhere, (Not ont he internet, in real life) so I figure that instead of trying to connect to the internet to get all my favorite programs, I should just download the programs to a flash drive and put them on that way. Only problem is that Once I get the program onto the flash drive How do I tell my computer to install from the flash drive? what to type int he terminal. I don't even know what most of the terminal type stuff means.

Ubuntu Installation :: Installing 10.04 Onto USB Flash Drive?

Jul 8, 2010

I'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 onto my 8GB flash drive using these instructions. I've run the install and installed GRUB2 and 10.04. However, selecting 10.04 on GRUB doesn't work.

On the instructions, it says this:

Quote:

You will also need to manually edit the menu.lst file of the new USB installation to change the boot references to /dev/sda, rather than /dev/sdb (or /dev/sdc etc.). This can be done by booting to the live distro mode of the Ubuntu install CD and editing the /boot/grub/menu.lst file on the USB stick. You can mount the USB stick using the Places menu -- once mounted, it can be found at /media/disk.

I'm not sure what the equivalent step would be for the GRUB2 files.

Ubuntu :: Cannot Read USB Portable Drive

Jan 7, 2011

I removed my old 160Gb laptop drive to install a new 320Gb drive. The 160Gb drive is partitioned as follows: 20Gb unallocated partition, 115Gb ext3 partition (running ubuntu 10.04), and 5Gb swap.

I placed this drive in a portable enclosure so that I could retrieve data from it. The Disk Utility in Ubuntu recognizes the drive but the partitions are not recognized, shows unknown and the only option available is to format the volume. If I place the drive back into my laptop, the drive boots normally and data is accessible.

I have connected other portable USB drives and they work (NTFS formatted), so USB ports are not the problem.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Difficulty With Portable Hard Drive

Jan 25, 2010

I'm a recent convert from windows machines to linux. From the first distro I tried I was blown away by how great linux is. But opensuse, while it has taken me a little bit longer to figure a few things out, has by far the best. It even allows me to configure my touchpad so it doesn't drive me insane. On to my actual problem. the portable harddrive placed all my files on to when switching from windows mounts but shows up empty.I know the files are there because they show up when i plug the harddrive into my ps3.

I put the all the files i wanted to save from windows into a folder called portableharddrive (i think) and put that folder on to the portable harddrive.if i do a directory search by running the drive in terminal this is what i get.Can anyone help me find my files or do i have to wait untill my girlfriend gets her computer back?

Software :: Installing Debian From USB Flash Drive - Cannot Mount "CD-ROM"

Jul 29, 2010

Due to the lack of a CD burner (at least one that works properly) I've been trying to install Debian on my laptop from a USB drive. I extracted the ISO contents onto my drive, made an entry in GRUB (on the flash drive - I'm booting from it) and can successfully begin the installation, but when it tries to mount the CD-ROM, obviously it can't, as there isn't one. I tried mounting the flash drive partition with the ISO contents to /cdrom manually, but I don't seem to be able to do so. I either get "No such device" or "Invalid argument". I CAN, however, mount the FAT32 partition of that flash drive (which oddly enough I cannot mount in Windows - go figure). The partition I need to mount is ext2. All of the partitions show up in /dev as well as /proc/filesystems.

Also, I'm using the netinstall to save space on my flash drive. ( http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/...86-netinst.iso )

Why can't I mount my ext2 partition?
