View 4 Replies View RelatedI just want a simple email notifier. I have started to use Ubuntu 10.10 and seem to have downloaded Gmailwatcher - it shows in Applications/Internet/Gmailwatcher. But it doesn't show as installed software in the Installed Software Centre. So, I cant uninstall it. I can't configure it? If I try to open Gmailwatcher I receive a popup asking me to open it from an icon above - but there's no icon there, I just want a simple email notifier - preferably one which I can add an audio alert.

However, when a software is not in the repo, I always wonder where I should install it, when everything comes together (i.e. /bin, /var, /man are all subfolders of the main folder of the software). For now, I've opted for /var/opt/ or /usr/share, but I'm not really sure this is a best practice... is there any guidelines on that?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm having trouble mounting my mac partition of my HD on the linux side while it's running on Parallels(a VM for mac). I've tried using the GUI and the terminal with no success... Honestly I have no clue what I'm doing. I've tried to follow other forums about it, but the stuff out there is out dated, I mean like 2006-2007... I'm running Snow Leopard osx 10.6.4. It shows "Failed to receive share list from server" when I click on the mac partition in the network GUI, to try and veiw the files. When I try to mount through terminal, it says "No such file or directory."
View 2 Replies View RelatedThis box was formerly running Ubuntu Server x64 9.04 on the same hardware and ran just fine. I have now turned it into a media center box running Ubuntu Desktop x64 9.10. Since this has been installed it freezes about once a day. When that happens I can't do anything with it, can't even SSH. Also, and current SSH sessions die and exit. I have checked every log under /var/log but I have not found the problem. There does not seem to crash after any certain amount of time, just after several hours of sitting idle.
Below are a few examples of the last entires in several logs. Note for the clocksource error I have already forced it to use different ones in my kernel options and rebooted but it still crashes, still with no errors to tell me what went wrong. I also know the rsyslog error is caused by a bug and would not cause the crash.
I had Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.1 installed in my intel i3 4gig DDR Sony Vaio E-series laptop. Both operating system were working fine. Only problem that I used to have was the sound didn't use to play when I boot through Ubuntu. Due to that, I formatted the corresponding drive from Windows in which there was Ubuntu installed. I used "diskmgmt.msc" to delete the partition and then format it. The format was successful and when I restarted my computer, this error was displayed:-

Windows didn't load at all. I used to have multiple boot grub menu previously before formatting the partition but that didn't show up after formatting.I am unable to use any of the Operating System.

got a laptop of hp with amd neo m40 pro and 2gb ram.. with vista installed.the worst OS.... i want to install linux with dual boot since am not expert in linux.these are the specs:
hard disk is 250 gb
c-155gb , d which is for recovery is 10.6gb, e-46.8gb
and an unallocated disk of 20gb
tried to install fedora which couldnt recognize the hard disk partition got ubuntu and tried.. but i dont know where it got installed now my 20 gb unallocated disk is showing as two partitions one of which is 1 gb and the rest is 18gb. how to uninstall ubuntu now. i want to repartition it and install it in proper way is 20gb enough.
I have just installed ubuntu 10.10 and i have noticed that my download speed is quite slow. i have an excellent connection to the internet and i didn't have any speed problems when i used windows vista. (i'm using a friend's windows 7 os right now and everything is fine.) how do i modify the download/bandwidth feature that is naturally a part of the ubuntu package so that it's not a problem anymore? the most i think i saw it download packages and files was 37 kb/s.
Basically, the kind of downloads i'm doing are for installing new packages to ubuntu, and that took ages. i even tried to download ubuntu 10.04 from ubuntu.com and it would have taken almost 3 hours to complete!

I am very new to Linux and trying to setup a Ubuntu server in my Windows 7 PC. that means, I am trying to have a dual boot system. While starting, my PC had 500GB and only one drive C. 18GB of it is used and rest was free.
I have gone thru the following step.
1. Downloaded Ubuntu server on a USB using "Universal USb installer"
2. Booted the PC from the USB and started the Install Ubuntu Server
3. After a few steps the install showed 4 partition options.
I specified the guided partitioning options using free space. (The other options where : Using entire disk, using entire disk with LVM, Manual) Next step it asked me to enter the disk space- it told me it will take at-least 19 GB and maximum available is approx 450GB. My intention was to use the full free space as much as possible. So I specified "max". It told me that it is going to overwrite and create the new partition. Then it progressed fine.
4. I also chosen to install the LAMP stack /Postgress etc.
The installation completed fine When rebooted I logged back in in windows 7. When I opened explorer, I still see that the C drive has around 18GB and 396 GB free space. t seems some of the space has been used by the linux server install. I again started my PC and now I logged in to Ubuntu. I tried command $ df -h . But it is showing the following:

I installed a few services using the dolphin tools menu (configure dolphin) but they're not showing up on right-click, how can I enable them.
Here's my setup:

My second problem is file search, the feature that comes with nautilus is way too slow, and catfish is lacking so many feature, I'm kind of a sucker for eye-candy, and when I tried beagle it stuck out like a sore thumb! Is there a good looking, well-developed file-search feature for the gnome desktop?
My third question is regarding the update in Lucid, it keeps telling me the following when I run: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

My last issue is with nautilus, I have many large directories with tons of subdirectories (especially my music folders), and nautilus can only view them as icons, list or columns, is there a way to install a script or plugin for nautilus to make it faster and/or include some form of miller columns like in dolphin (I believe it's the best way to view large folders).
i got this new computer with Windows 7 on it and promptly installed Ubuntu 10.10. it didn't recognize my graphics card or screen, and i was too lazy to figure it out. (xorg.conf was missing?) anyway, I went back to windows and deleted the partition that linux was on. When i reboot the computer, all it shows is "grub rescue>" and a command line. as you can probably tell by my writing, i am a teenager who lives under my parents' roof and they bought me this computer, and now it doesn't work...so i used my backup disk and i reinstalled windows back to factory settings, and it still shows up with a grub command line. so does this mean that my win os is misplaced or something.. I don't know if this matters, but i have a Gateway with Intel Pentium dual-core processor.

i installed win xp2 in my c: drive as usual it deleted my grub startup I had fedora 10 installed before installing XP and when i put the fedora cd to get back the startup it shows the following : " An Unhandled Exception has occured..This is most likely a Bug" and the details i had deleted my swap partiton.

After going round and round for 3 hours chasing missing dependencies I'm finally stuck at a place where I don't know how to proceed. According to the instructions I'm following: "In case of an older kernel (version < 2.6.30)Get kernel sources using the following git repository:
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-2.6.30.y.git
cd <spice_root>/vdesktop/kernel
./configure
ln -s <linux-2.6.30 source dir> linux-2.6
make sync

Unfortunately my CentOS box (the one I'm working on) doesn't have internet capability, so I have to download everything on my windows box and burn it to cd. So I downloaded the 2.6.30 source from kernel.org, copied it to my CentOS box and unpacked it. I got as far as "make sync" in those instructions before I hit the next snag. When I tried to "make" it gave me an error "/lib/modules/2.6.18-194.el5/build no such file or directory"When I look for the referenced "build" file, it says link broken and when I follow the link to "/usr/src/kernels/2.6.18-194.el5-x86_64" which does in fact not exist.
So a quick google search reveals I need the source for my current kernel in addition to the 2.6.30 kernel source. The instructions here:
[URL] for the full kernel source look hugely complicated and involve rpms which is something I know nothing about. I tried to yum install kernel-devel hoping that would appease the unhappy make build, but I'm limited to installing things on the CentOS install DVD and yum tells me "error downloading packages" from the DVD repo, so I guess the source files are not the DVD? To top it all off, I only have 30 Mb of free space left on this drive anyhow, so I don't think there is room download the whole source anyway unless I put it on cd and mount it or link to it somehow in ways that make my tired brain hurt.
