General :: ISO File - Minimal Bootable CD
Aug 23, 2010
I'd like to download an iso file for a cd to be used like my win98se backup diskette. I would need command line, fdisk, mkfs, mkdir, mount, unmount, tar. Want to use it to backup fedora 12. Have clonezille - know of dd - neither quite what I want. Best if it is a relative of fedora so it makes appropriate assumptions - good if it is small to minimize download time.

I have Orace linux .iso's on a memory stick. I could burn them to CD's and install linux from the CDs. However I would rather not waste 5 CDs and just install from the memory stick. How can I do that? How do I make the memory stick bootable? I did try changing the boot options but I could find the right one.

creating a bootable floppy from a bootable floppy image on a NON Linux machine I am trying to install dsl (damnsmallLinux) on one of my old Compaq 2000 Deskpro machine having 256RAM and 2 GB hardisk. (which I hope to increase to 8 or 10 GB ...can I use a larger disk capacity??) I have downloaded the floppy bootable image from the website using a machine a fedora OS machine that does not have a floppy drive. I have even converted the image file to an iso file. I can copy this image file or iso file to the Compaq machine but how do I use it as a bootable floppy? OR how do I create a bootable floppy disk from this image?

After a long time I tried ubuntu(9.10) again on my fileserver, I have some remarks; why does a minimal server installation include X/openoffice? I don't need document conversion on a fileserver and I bet a lot of people don't. Wouldn't it be better to create a new server package and leave minimal minimal? low memory installs (64mb) don't work unless you configure swap by hand in between things, 64mb ram is a lot in my eyes. I mean, not to be rude but if I wanted all this I could've better installed Solaris.
That said it's stable and running fine. Since it's my home fileserver I tried to convert my previously created raid10 mirror on an adaptec 1200 card to a softraid 5 solution. This is wat I did:

I am running ubuntu 9.10 on my pc, trying to update the bios on a thinkpad a31. I'm trying to create a bootable iso disk from the downloaded file from ibm (spsuiv69.exe) it is currently sitting on my desktop.
To be clear - I am having trouble making the .exe file an iso. I read this is the best way to update bios on a linux machine, if there are better ideas - whatever works.

I have downloaded the Ubuntu 10.04-netbook iso file and now want to prepare a USB drive to boot from, so that I can run Ubuntu on my Acer netbook. I used WinRAR to extract the file to the desktop. When I try to locate the file through Universal USB Installer it doesn't show up in the window.

I am trying to create a bootable DVD disk of Fedora. I am having trouble in doing this. I want to format the Hard drive and create a new file system. I have downloaded the source cds for fedora12 AND fedorai386 downloads. I have been trying to create a DVD burn with the Fedora12.iso extracted and then burned to DVD. This does not work. I just want to be able to pop the DVD in and then start the install, and on any machine.

I modified the thinclient OS PXES cfg file. Now I want to create bootable disk of pxes.iso file so that I can mount in Virtual box and check whether it wirks properly. I first created a normal ISO using MAgic ISO. When I try to create a bootable disk using the same ISO it asks for "load boot information file". I don't know which file should I select. All I want is to create bootable disk of the customized PXES OS and mount in virtual box and test it?

I'm running Ubuntu 7.04 server on a low spec spare machine ( 500MHz, 128 RAM) but fancy a change. Basically would like a non-GUI, command line only interface, running SSH, Samba and a flavor of FTP. FTP must be set up so users only have access to their home directory and not to any other system dirs. In addition I may want to incorporate anonymous ftp login at some point. Any recommendations for both FTP and minimal server software ?

Running Ubuntu 10.04 currently. But for some reason cant seem to find what im looking for about making USB drives bootable once ive downloaded the .iso file i want. USB-creator-gtk seems to only work with the ubuntu family. ImageWriter only works with .img files? I want to play around with other linux distros from .iso. I tried makebootfat and got some errors. ill post them later if you guys think makebootfat is the way to go but i think im making it to too hard on myself.

If I dd copy a bootable usb drive to an iso will the iso be bootable?
I haven't tried it yet, but i'm going to. Heres the situation and tell me if I'm crazy.
I have several bootable CDs I use at work to do different things, so I went ahead and made a multi-boot usb stick with the isos on them and everything is golden. When i need something else, I am able to slap the ISO on the usb stick, edit the menu.lst and I'm good to go.
The problem is, for some of our equipment I have a bootable USB stick that I have to use. I tried copying the files on the bootable USB to my multi-boot usb and setup grub to boot it (which admittedly I'm no expert at), but have had no luck.
So now I'm thinking, I'll use dd to copy the bootable USB stick to an iso (using bs=2048) and then do my normal setup with an ISO and maybe it will work.

When I signed up for my Debian Linux VPS hosting and first logged on and invoked ps, there was the only user process running: sshd. As I can see, this was minimal Linux with only two things installed and configured: sshd and apt (plus all dependencies, of course).
I want to build (or use existing) similar Linux distro, any advice on how to build (or pick) one? Googling "minimum linux", or "linux with sshd only" usually brings up Debian's netinstall, which is not what I want.

I just installed ubuntu today, and it asked me to install over 200 security updates. When I finished that, it asked me to restart the computer so that the updates will take effect. After Dell (it's a Dell computer) booted, I got a message reading:
"Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else, TAB lists possible device or file completions."

Total, total noob here, but I would like to know if this is possible, and maybe some tips on how to do it if it is.I just got myself a dedicated server, and I guess I assumed I could just remote control it via my own screen, much like using vnc or remote desktop, but that wasn't the case. The server has Debian 5.0, a "minimal install" is what they called it, I assume it's just installed and not configured at all.1. Connect to the server, and I guess the only way is via telnet? Since I have no VNC or remote desktop (yeah, microsoft, I know, but I don't know what it's called for Linux/GNU).2. Can I install VNC or somehow "activate" or "open" the GUI via telnet, much like a remote desktop kind of solution? I have used Debian's GUI on my laptop a couple of times, and I'm a total Windows-user, but I can navigate the graphical interface. I'm just COMPLETELY nulled when it comes to command line.So yeah, I guess I'm wondering how the heck I can remote control the server via a GUI, preferably VNC, and if I can install it via telnet or however I'm supposed to connect to the server?

I'm looking for a way to make a bootable floppy that has drdflash.img, my flash utility and my bios file on it for a bios recovery disk. This is on a board that has a failed bios, so everything is pretty much dead (except for the humble floppy drive). I don't have a screen to work with so this floppy needs to be able to run the utility and automatically flash the chip for me. I've heard this is possible, but am unable to find clear instructions on how to do any of this. I know the basics of it is to copy the bios file and flash utility to a floppy along with a bootdisk that will run these things (sometimes the .bat file needs to be modified in order to do this automatically). So I've downloaded drdflash but it came as a .img and I don't think it can be 'just' copied to disk. I came across the 'dd' command but have also heard its nicknamed 'data destroyer' or words to that effect.
