I am trying to copy four files from my machine, through a second machine, and finally to the destination. The destination computer can only be reached through the second computer, and I am curious to know if there is an easy way to do this. I am able to ssh to the middle machine and then ssh from there to the destination. I know that I could just copy from the first machine to the second, and then from there to the third. I guess that I'm curious to know what kind of command I can run to do this all at once or even if I could do such a thing (which I'm betting I can). I need to copy these files as root on the destination machine too.

View 8 Replies View RelatedSo I just built a new computer and installed Ubuntu 10.10 on it here are the specs
Mobo: Asus M4a785T
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition
HDD with OS: WD Blue 640GB
Storage HDDs: 4xWD Green 2TB (2 of the HDDs are TrueCrypt)
When I copy data from one of the TrueCrypted HDDs, the computer will freeze (display gets screwy and unresponsive). Time to screw up will vary. Sometimes its as soon as I copy and sometimes its 30mins into the copy of lots and/or large files. I'm pretty sure its not the HDD because I've used these same HDDs on an older computer with no issues. I recently put the HDD giving me issues into an external case and hooked it up to my laptop running Ubuntu 10.10 and copied the same files that were giving me fits. So I thought it might be the system and not the HDDs So I ran prime95(or rather the linux equivalent)It ran for over 12Hrs with no issues. so I think the system is fine. What could be causing the constant crashing when copying files?

View 3 Replies View RelatedIs there a way to remove the Computer, Trash, and Home folder from the desktop and have them just in the panel? I like a clean desktop with no icons, and would like to use the top panel as a "dock" of sorts.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI wanted to create another panel on my computer. I created one, which formed directly above one that I already had (at the bottom of one of my two screens). Just out of curiosity I asked it to autohide. That was a big mistake. Now, I am unable to right click to remove or change the panel (the right click menu doesn't appear). This is true for all my panels. I thought logging out might fix it. No luck. Restart. No luck. Now my "top level" panel won't load, which means I don't have access to any of the main menus at all. Basically, the only think I can access at this point is what is on my desktop.

I would like to be able to auto login to my centOS 5.4 linux machine when it boots up. Is there a intuitive way to do this? I'm running the motif window manager. The problem is that my computer boots up into motif but it asks me to login as root. I would like to eliminate this.
View 1 Replies View RelatedIs there any way a non-root user can programmatically determine which days the computer ran during, say, the last month?
The information is in /var/log/messages.* but those files are root:root 640.
Non of the world-readable /var/log files on the Slackware 13.0 development system can be used:boot Not present if boot logging not enabled (default). dmesg No timestamps. lastlog Not enough info. wtmp Rewritten on each boot so not enough info. EDIT: not correct: by default wtmp is rotated weekly and kept for one month as configured in /etc/logrotate.conf xdm.log Not present if xdm not used. Xorg.0.log Not present if X not run.
I don't know that this post fits here, nor does it fit in "Applications." installing suse doesn't seem to give you the chance to name your computer. Now my computer is called "linux-0qvi" or something strange like that. I want to name my computer. Can I do this now without screwing things up??
Also, during install, there didn't seem to be an opportunity to make a separate root password. My first (and main user) account is now set up with admin rights, so I have to type in my account password every time I do something as root. Can I set a separate dedicated root password without screwing up my system?
I Installed the maintained package, Day one everything worked fine, I set a dummy database and work on it from VM windows. Day two weird errors, I searched around couldn't find the problem, the error was related to The root user losing privileges. I don't remember the exact error. So I decided to Completely remove the DB with apt-get remove mysql-Server-5.1. It gets stuck during the uninstall, I left the machine for a day and a half to uninstall mysql. I realized it was no use, I tried to Restart and try again, but I am getting the same thing.
Code:

I can't progress I am at the brink now, my only option right now is format, but I don't wanna do that. This setup is almost 5 years old and I have gone with many ups and downs with it. From Windows to 8.04 to 8.10 to 9.04 to 9.10 to now 10.04 each year loving the resilience of Ubuntu and the Linux architecture. I don't want to believe that this has killed my spree.
Sending computer runs linux. Recieving runs OS X.
View 2 Replies View RelatedYes, I know this is not a good practice, and this is only a short-term solution.I have a server with a web-file-server daemon running internally as root, so the permissions for all files it transfers/creates have a uid/gid of 0:0.This is fine for the daemon, but I would like to manage those files from another workstation - actually a few workstations on a very limited LAN subnet - through NFS. How would it be possible to have users from a certain subnet mount NFS with root read/write abilities?I have seen the anonuid/anongid options (for the /etc/exports file), but I'm not so sure this is the right way to go.
