General :: How Installers Detect Hardwares

Dec 22, 2010

We know that each OS has it's own installer which takes care of installation process. The first step in any installation process is detecting the system platform architecture and hardwares such as CPU, RAM, VGA, Mouse, Keyboard, Hard Disk,... so it can act based on system configuration and do a clean install, now my question is: "How an installer can do this for the first time?".

I another word: "How lspci/hwinfo/prtconf/kudzu/... can gather those amount of information about hardwares?" (Yes! all of these commands will read some files for gathering those informations! but I need to know who and how created those files)

1- Note that, if we have a binary which compiled for a X86 architecture then it won't work on a Sparc system!

2- OpenSolaris can do that!

Security :: Cryptography On Package Installers ?

Jan 18, 2011

I would like to know if provisions for cryptographic algorithms, especially things like digital signature of packages/applications etc are a native feature of any linux package installer/package manager.

Another question is: Do all linux based systems natively support cryptography? if yes, what engines do they use? Do they all use openssl or do they use high level java based engines like Harmony(Apache) or Bouncy castle?

I have an ubuntu 10.10 and I know openssl support is already provided. However I want to know if any system level program actually uses it or not.

Fedora Installation :: Installers Crash With Realtek 8111DL Enabled ?

Oct 27, 2009

I have a Biostar TA785GE which as I understand it, has a Realtek 8111DL on-board.

Booting with F11 32-bit DVD, and the F12 Live CD crashes before any user input, with indecipherable text on-screen (text mode, not X11).

Symptoms were the same with the Fedora 11 32-bit installation DVD, the Fedora 12 Live 32-bit CD and the CentOS 64-bit install DVD.

Booting with "linux text" mode (w/CentOS DVD) shows a kernel panic in ":r8169:rtl8169_init_one+0x369/0x9d4" from "pci_device_probe+0x100/0x180". I'll have to shutdown again to try the Fedora CD/DVDs, but if there's a different panic I'll post that tomorrow.

Disabling the on-board NIC allowed the boot to proceed, and get as far as detecting the hard drive partitions (where I stopped it since Ubuntu is installed).

Ubuntu 9.04 Workstation(Desktop?) install DVD worked fine, and I've installed it and am using it to enter this.

From Ubuntu 9.04 on this hardware: "uname -r" shows

Code:

Code:

Code:

Code:

So, my question: if I disable the NIC and install (alongside Ubuntu), will I be able to get the 8111DL working with a Fedora kernel?

Debian Multimedia :: XOrg Auto-detect Failing To Detect Max Screen Resolution

May 29, 2011

I've installed Squeeze 2.6.32-5-amd64 on my laptop (Alienware M17X R3, Intel i7 Sandybridge, ATI Technologies Inc Broadway [ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6800 Series])The screen is 17", with maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080. After a default install of the operating system, the maximum resolution I can select is 1280 x 1024.My research so far has suggested that I need to edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and provide xorg with the necessary resolution.

Again, by default, the xorg.conf file is not created. This leads me to believe that xorg is scanning my hardware at startup and providing me with whatever it thinks is appropriate. I tried following these instructions to generate an xorg.conf file. This process created an xorg.conf file under /root/.

When I copy this xorg.conf file to /etc/X11, I get a blank (i.e. black) screen. Deleting this file restores the default resolution 1280 x 1024.This system is dual booting with Windows 7. Under windows I am able to get a 1920 x 1080 resolution, so I know my hardware is up to it.At this stage I have yet to install the drivers for the Radeon graphics card. What are my options regarding configuring xorg to give me a higher screen resolution?

Is there a package of fw-detect eventually?

General :: Scanimage -L Does Not Detect Scanner

May 13, 2011

I got a new Canon LiDE 110 scanner. It's a very cheap device but the important thing is that it is listed as "completely supported" in the SANE site. I had to compile the latest SANE from sources, but I have no problems with compiling from sources, and now everything runs from the version in /usr/local/... The problem is that "scanimage -L" doesn't detect the scanner. I also don't see any scanners under /dev/... I think it might help if I pass the scanner device with the -d option to scanimage but I don't know how to find out what the device file of it is.

This is what I see with lsusb:

i can't roaming to another ap2 although the laptop just put beside ap2

1. can i set some files that indicate what strength F13 will detect another ap ?

2. when the ap's strength less than a value, it take about 30's or more to detect & transfer from weak ap to strength ap, does that situation normal? or how to speed up the ap's roaming?

General :: Debian 5.0.8 Won't Detect Ethernet Adapter

Jan 31, 2011

I'm installing Debian 5.0.8 on a Dell Latitude E6410 using the network install x86 CD.

Unfortunately, it won't detect my Ethernet adapter. Specifically, I get the error: No Ethernet card was detected. If you know the name of the driver needed by your Ethernet card, you can select it from the list.

lspci shows: 00:19.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation Device 10ea (rev 05)

That should correspond to the e1000e driver. But, if I select it from the list, the install CD still fails to detect it.

Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7 are able to use this device with no problem.

Does anybody know what I can do to make Debian use/recognize my ethernet adapter?

Edit: Additional Info:

I think this is an Intel 82577LM Gigabit Ethernet chipset. If I switch from the graphical installer to the console and run lsmod, I see e1000e with a use count of 0.

General :: Detect If A Program Is Writing To A File?

Mar 3, 2009

I have custom software that writes to a sensitive large file when the user does something. I would like to make backup copies of The file that gets written to, but if I make a gzip of the file at the same time someone is changing something, it will corrupt the backup because some of the data will be missing, as its backed up during being written to.

a) Is there a way to detect if a file is currently being accessed/written to?
That way if its currently being accessed, I can just make the script wait until its done and then finally back it up.

b) Instead of backing up the large file while it has potential to get written to, would it be better to make a copy of the file first, then gzip the copy? This idea comes from the fact that gzipping the original takes 5-10 seconds, whereas making a copy only takes 1-2 seconds. The less time, the less chance of corruption.

c) Is there anyway to freeze a program or a file to stop it from being written to for an amount of time?

With a, b, and c together. The best solution I have to my problem would be a script that first detects rather the file is being accessed. If not, it would then freeze the file/program and then make a quick copy of it. Once the copy is created, it will unfreeze the original file/program and then go about gzipping the copy.
