Today I missed class because my clock was an hour slow. The cause of this seems to be because the windows time service wasn't switched on. Seems to work fine now. Why does windows not use the hardware clock on the motherboard? What does Linux do?
View 1 RepliesWhile dual-booting Windows and Linux, Linux sets the system time to UTC, so Windows thinks it's midnight near mid-morning. Is there any other way to tell Windows to use UTC? I've seen the registry tweak proposed here and other places. View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running windows 7 and the F12 Beta (although the same issue existed in my f11 distro) on an asus g71 bb. When ever I boot into windows my time is correct. If I boot into to F12 my time is wrong. Usually by 4 hours. If I change it in Linux when I boot into windows I end up switching the time on my windows partition. I tried searching the forum (rather casual I'll admit) and couldn't find any solutions.

I've noticed that he conky clock is a few seconds early compared to the time displayed in the right hand side of the top panel (Natty). I guess both displays are based on the same "internal" time, so I'm left wondering how this could happen, and how to sync back the clocks.
It seems that Conky is in sync with the system date, while the panel clock is 2 seconds late (on my system). Checked with while true; do date; sleep 0.1; done
Just curious as to if it is possible to have the clock in the center of the task bar centered clock in Ubuntu 11.04?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI had to boot into my Windows 7 install on my laptop for the first time in a few months and I noticed that the Windows clock was 4 hours ahead. Windows sync'd its time with the internet, then I booted back into Debian (Lenny) and my clock was now 4 hours behind. Both OS's are set to the same time zone (EDT). The minutes were correct in both systems. Could the fact that EDT is UTC-0400 be relevant?

View 6 Replies View RelatedMy computer has two physical hard drives. Up till now, the first hard drive was for Windows XP and Windows 7, the second was used for file storage. I just installed Lucid Lynx on the second drive. The two problems are as follows.

2. I have kept the Windows 7 boot loader (choice of 7 or XP) on the first hard drive, and put Ubuntu and grub on the second hard drive. That way, if I want to load Ubuntu, I press F9 for the hp boot menu and select the second hard drive. From there, I would like this to boot straight into Ubuntu. How do I keep the grub boot menu from appearing? Should I just edit grub.cfg, so it has a timeout value of 0?
Does anyone know of an interface to a quartz clock that can be used for a TOD clock?? I want to interface it to an Arduino board. Can be GPIO or USB.

However, the time showing in os using date command differs from bios time by roughly 4 hours. I am running ntp services which sync the time with another centos server on the network. It appears that some services are using virtual clock and some use physical clock. How do I get rid of virtual clock and only use physical clock?

Is there a program [apart from time servers] to correct clock properly, for example, by shifting it a bit every hour? Is there already a program to put it to crontab or I should hack up a script? Or I should check more things?
I have found that HW clock is right, but system time is slow: about a second each 2.1 hours.

I have a strange problem with my Ubuntu Natty virtual machine running under VirtualBox on OSX.One day last week, my clock on the top bar in Gnome stopped displaying the correct time (I'm not running Unity). I'm on GMT, so right now it should be 9:31, but it's showing 3:31, so I think it's something to do with TimeZones. If I go into the date and time applet, the time is initially wrong but after a second sets itself to the correct GMT Time. The timezone is correclty set as London and it makes no difference if I unlock and set it again or select manual or automatic from internet time.
From a bash prompt, the "date" command shows: "Tue Sep 20 03:33:35 CDT 2011".If I run "sudo dpkg-reconfigure tzdata" I am correctly set as London. Upon exiting the commnand I'm shown the correct London time, but then typing "date" again shows the CDT time again.The clock is correct in OSX. This has been working fine for a month or two - I think it stopped working after an update last week. Any ideas?
I left the linux world for a few years and now i am trying to re-learn my shell scripting basics. I am writing a script for an alarm clock, but i seem to be running into a few issues.

My script, instead of doing what it should, produces the following errors:
./alarm: line 19: echo 11: No such file or directory
./alarm: line 26: 6: command not found

and if i choose the time 11:06, files called 11 and 6 are creating in the working directory. I am sure it is something really simple, but i haven't used linux or scripting on my computers in around 6 years.
the time on system clock given with 'date' command keeps moving forward about 1 minute for every hour of realtime. The box is up all the time so this is not an issue with motherboard battery. An equivalent box with the same hardwre/OS and applications doesn't have the same level of drift. I'm not sure what else this could be.Both boxes are Centos 5.2 64-bit.

I checked the temps with ln_sensors, KVM and DC temps, everything is running great. I didn't get any shutdown in the meantime. I basically need a way to disable those warnings but reboot is out of question, means no BIOS. Hope its possible to disable it from the console itself, with blacklistinh some kernel module(s) or something like that.

The clock is off by 6 hours, which coincidentally is the difference between my time zone and GMT, -6 hours. Its not six hours behind but rather six hours ahead of my local time. My interpretation the setting for my local time zone is not being saved? Or are they being overridden by the OS'es? Both OS have the same time zone setting, Central Standard Time USA?

I have Cairo clock on my startup list, but after logging in cairo-clock appears on left top corner, but as it is the position reserved for computer, my home, mounted volumes etc. So I want to change default position of cairo-clock to left but there is no such option in the preferences of cairo-clock. View 6 Replies View RelatedVery simple question but very frustrating as none of the other threads/bug reports/whatever have had quite the same problem. I want gnome clock to display the time in 12 hour format. The suggested solution is something like right-click the clock -> Preferences and somewhere there will be an option to choose 12/24 hour time. Problem is I don't have that option.
The help has a note that 12 hour time "is not shown if your session language does not use the 12 hour clock" but this really shouldn't be a problem? My language/locale/city, everything I can think of, it's all some variation of en_GB, UK English, Brisbane, Australia: all places which should allow the option of 12 hour clock! So why don't I have that option?
