I checked the temps with ln_sensors, KVM and DC temps, everything is running great. I didn't get any shutdown in the meantime. I basically need a way to disable those warnings but reboot is out of question, means no BIOS. Hope its possible to disable it from the console itself, with blacklistinh some kernel module(s) or something like that.

Got HP proliant dl360 g6 running RHEL 5 (x86_64). 10 days ago full update was done, inc kernel was upgraded. Everything has worked normally until today I got in log:

Server room as AC, temperature is normal all the time.
hpasmcli -s "show temp" shows everything (AMBIENT, CPU#-s , CPU ZONE ) is normal, belowe threshold.

I'm running on a Xenon L5408 and my OS is CentOS 5.4. The system I'm developing needs to be able to run in a room that *may* get rather hot. When the core temperatures gets up to around 99DegC I get the following message sent to the terminal. "temperature above threshold cpu clock throttled". So Linux some how knows whats going on. So I'm now running in a degraded state. My question is, from an application I'm writting (c++), how would I go about detecting a throttled clock.

I have installed nagios in a CentOS vm and now its monitoring the local host, one remote host which is also a vm with CentOS 5.3 and one windows xp system. Is there any option for me to change the threshold time for the services given? For e.g. I had a service of current_load which comes as a default plugin while installing nagios itself. What should I do to change the threshold value of the current_load so that I might get the warning or error alert some time earlier as it was now.

I have had a fairly perplexing problem with my Lubuntu Maverick installation on my laptop for the past few weeks. My laptop is connected to a DSL-based LAN via 100mbps Ethernet - pretty typical. Usually, the download speed from most websites tends to be around 340-350kb/s. However, its Ethernet connection seems to be having some strange hiccups. The speed starts out at normal ranges, but after about 5-10 minutes of internet use through any means (be it loading normal web pages, streaming video, downloading a file via a browser, or even other uses such as downloading a torrent using Transmission, or even a command line application such as apt, aptitude or wget, etc), the speed suddenly drops to around 40kb/s and will not raise again.
Once this happens, the drop is seen across the board. Again, once it happens, the speed of everything that accesses the internet is affected. Web pages load slowly, all downloads will only operate at a maximum of 40kb/s, whether it is from any browser, or wget in a terminal. The speed stayed slow until I restarted, which would give me another 5-10 minutes. My troubleshooting attempts yielded some very strange results, which I will relate here:.......

I was playing around with a script that seems to work relatively for my needs when SSH comms fail - AKA a user or someone attacking. This works. But, how would I add a threshold value? lets say if there are 3 entries, then perform add the IP to iptables as a rule.

I want to check if traffic to a specific URL is being throttled by a hospital acting as an ISP. A client is having great trouble accessing a hosted web-app from inside the hospital, but access is fine from outside. The hospital IT dept are not interested as the rest of the Internet is fine. I need to trace where the latency is creeping in or where the throttling is happening, if I can do that, the hospital will remove it. Traffic is standard http to a specific URL.

I'm using a very simple conky script to diplay the date and time on my desktop. I've noticed that he conky clock is a few seconds early compared to the time displayed in the right hand side of the top panel (Natty). I guess both displays are based on the same "internal" time, so I'm left wondering how this could happen, and how to sync back the clocks.
It seems that Conky is in sync with the system date, while the panel clock is 2 seconds late (on my system). Checked with while true; do date; sleep 0.1; done

I am using the standalone k10temp temperature sensor but it doesn't give the actual temperature of the cpu, just some "bogus" temp value that isn't very useful.Does anyone know how you can calculate the real temperature from this reading?

Trying to install Ubuntu from CD. I choose my language and hit Install and come to a black screen with the Ubuntu symbol glowing (loading everything I assume) and after a minute my screen fills up with messages saying my CPU Temperature is 99 (gets progressively higher) degrees. Is there something else I need to do before installing?
I have windows installed on my C drive and I'm planning on installing Linux on another blank drive. The Ubuntu version is the newest one (9.10) I think. I've got a Core i7, EVGA mobo, Nvidia 9600GT video card, and 6 gigs of memory. HDDs are all WD I believe, and the one I'm putting Linux on is 320 Gig.

I had cloned a centos 5.6 installation from virtualbox virtual machine to physical box. Everything work fine. However, the time showing in os using date command differs from bios time by roughly 4 hours. I am running ntp services which sync the time with another centos server on the network. It appears that some services are using virtual clock and some use physical clock. How do I get rid of virtual clock and only use physical clock?

Currently my CPU temperature as measured by lm-sensors increases by 1-2 C upto 4-5 C when I start a new process - like a video, music, etc. The change takes place in less than a second. Is this normal or should the change be happening more slowly?
If it is indeed happening too rapidly, what could be the likely causes?
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 with Core i5 430M.
Edit: I should add that these are temperatures from an HP laptop (dm4t).

I have a Dell Precision M4500, Intel Core i5 CPU, running Linux (Ubuntu Lucid), and would like to keep an eye on CPU temperature. I've tried lm-sensors: sensors-detect didn't find any sensors; following its hint ("This is relatively common on laptops, where thermal management is handled by ACPI rather than the OS.") I tried acpi -V but got nothing thermal. The Gnome panel applet "Hardware Sensors Monitor" reports on GPU temperature but nothing else.

I'm trying to monitor the temperature of my GPUs (multiple ATI 5970) in my computation cluster. Problem is that the aticonfig tool does not work in headless mode
# /usr/bin/aticonfig --od-gettemperature No protocol specified ERROR - X needs to be running to perform ATI Overdrive(TM) commands
and even worse if I try to run aticonfig with my monitoring user (munin) it will ask to be executed as root. Is there a simple way to read the temperature of the GPUs without having to resort to X?

Today I missed class because my clock was an hour slow. The cause of this seems to be because the windows time service wasn't switched on. Seems to work fine now. Why does windows not use the hardware clock on the motherboard? What does Linux do?

My laptop's clock (Acer Extensa 5220) seems to be slow. I've corrected it 5 minutes forward last week and now have just corrected minute forward again. Is there a program [apart from time servers] to correct clock properly, for example, by shifting it a bit every hour? Is there already a program to put it to crontab or I should hack up a script? Or I should check more things?
I have found that HW clock is right, but system time is slow: about a second each 2.1 hours.

While dual-booting Windows and Linux, Linux sets the system time to UTC, so Windows thinks it's midnight near mid-morning. Is there any other way to tell Windows to use UTC? I've seen the registry tweak proposed here and other places. I want to adjust clock in ubuntu. When I installed it it asked about location and setting if for asia it automatically take the clock, but that timing is not correct. It showed 10 pm when actually it was 5pm. After installation I tried it to adjust but it could not be managed..it automatically took that previous timing.

Yesterday I configured an NTP Server, and synched a sever with my NTP Server. Now some how my Client clock jumped one hour ahead at 12:00 AM, while HW Clock and NTP Server Clock remained.

I have a strange problem with my Ubuntu Natty virtual machine running under VirtualBox on OSX.One day last week, my clock on the top bar in Gnome stopped displaying the correct time (I'm not running Unity). I'm on GMT, so right now it should be 9:31, but it's showing 3:31, so I think it's something to do with TimeZones. If I go into the date and time applet, the time is initially wrong but after a second sets itself to the correct GMT Time. The timezone is correclty set as London and it makes no difference if I unlock and set it again or select manual or automatic from internet time.
From a bash prompt, the "date" command shows: "Tue Sep 20 03:33:35 CDT 2011".If I run "sudo dpkg-reconfigure tzdata" I am correctly set as London. Upon exiting the commnand I'm shown the correct London time, but then typing "date" again shows the CDT time again.The clock is correct in OSX. This has been working fine for a month or two - I think it stopped working after an update last week. Any ideas?
