Ubuntu :: Waiting Indefinitely At Grub Screen

Jul 19, 2011

I have several servers running Ubuntu Desktop. These servers are remote access only and do not have a monitor or keyboard attached normally. I'm running into problems with them occasionally getting hung up, after crashing, on the grub recovery mode screen. The only way for me to make them boot up is to hook up a keyboard and hit enter.

My /etc/default/grub file is default:
GRUB_DEFAULT=0
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true
GRUB_TIMEOUT=10
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""

What do I need to change to disable the grub loader screen from coming up automatically ever, or at least to make the timeout work when it does happen?

Fedora Installation :: Upgrade From 9 To 10 - DVD Waiting For GRUB To Load

Feb 10, 2009

I've just tried to upgrade my Fedora 9 (x86_64) installation to Fedora 10 using the installation DVD. The upgrade seemed to proceed very smoothly, no errors ,nor warnings, it just seemed that it is upgrading grub (yes, I chose to upgrade grub as well) and all the packages (it took about 20 minutes). However, after the upgrade was over, it asked me to reboot my computer, so that's what I did, I took out the DVD and waited for GRUB to load.

It loaded just fine, but I was quite surprised when there was no option to boot Fedora 10 in the list. Ok, so I booted into Fedora 9 which went fine, the layout changed to the new one and some programs don't run. When I looked into /lib/modules I couldn't see any fc10 kernel installed. So the question is what happened and what should I do, so that it upgrades to fc10?

OpenSUSE Install :: Grub Failure And Now Waiting For Device

Dec 10, 2009

2 weeks ago, my power supply blew, during close-down. My system is a SUSE Linux 10.1 and openSUSE 11.1 dual boot with WInXP (for those family things). After replacing the power supply my system had no root partition, or loader. It said something like "Invalid Partition table". Grub had gone! So following swerdna's "How to Boot into openSUSE" tutorial I used the openSuse 11.1 install CD rescue option to get to the command prompt, su'd, went to grub and followed the stated commands. So far so good.

However the new grub entry openSUSE (Failsafe) has a problem. It starts to boot in the usual way, but I note fatal Module errors in the boot log relating to sata_nv not found, ide_pci_generic not found etc, and Fatal error inserting edd (/lib/modules/2.6.27.39-0.2-default/kernel/driver/firmware/edd.ko): no such device but uses udev as boot source until Waiting for device /dev/disk/by-id/ataST3120827AS-4M60PX7V-part6...... and then it exits to /bin/sh.

I know there is a similar thread but my problem is different from the other one I read.In the other thread, the grub terminal would not accept the password the person would enterIn my case it literally wont let me type my password or anything at all! It asks me to input my password but no matter how many times I press a key nothing happens.Possibly important details: I am following a guide to change the boot order on grub while running the Ubuntu OS and using the terminal. But the issue is the same, I have tried accessing the root mode but it would not let me type my password there either.

Ubuntu Installation :: Fresh 10.04 Raid1 Install Will Not Boot W/o Manual Grub Input?

May 3, 2011

Followed steps 2-5 and purged/reinstalled grub now it boots as it should, NO idea where it was messed up.[URL].. I had 9.10 running in raid1 and upgraded my hardware (cpu, mb, memory etc) and wanted to do a fresh install of 10.04 to get updated. After following the various guides online such as [URL]...It begins to load grub and drops to a "grub> " shell. Which I have to do the following to get it to boot.

Code:
set root=(md1)
linux /vmlinuz root=/dev/md1 ro
initrd /initrd.img
boot

Then it boots up normally and I can use it like any other desktop. I've been over my grub.cfg and /etc/defaut/grub files and cannot find the issue. At this point I'm wondering if the fact it's a raid1 setup is keeping grub from finding it's files.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Change Stereo Mic Input To Mono Input?

Nov 4, 2010

I recently got a real fancy unidirectional microphone, but when I go and use it, something strange happens. The mic is a mono mic, but when I record something, it appears to think it's stereo. Instead of having the same thing on both channels, it puts it all in the left channel, and silence on the right channel.

I tried fiddling with alsamixer. In capture (F4), adjusting the "Capture" device has an effect. However, it doesn't do anything useful. Lowering the right channel to zero does nothing, lowering the left channel to zero creates silence, and disabling the right channel creates silence.

In my System>Preferences>Sound (or pavucontrol, or what-have-you), there are "Analog Stereo Input" and "Analog Stereo Duplex" options there, but no "Analog Mono Input" or "Analog Stereo Output + Analog Mono Input" options (the latter being ideal).

Something interesting, though, if I do this:
Code:
arecord -r 96000 -D pulse -c 1 -vv -V mono /dev/null
it works correctly and outputs on both channels. But if I do
Code:
arecord -r 96000 -D pulse -c 2 -vv -V stereo /dev/null
then it's back to the same behavior. The VU meter on the second command shows the left channel going up and down as I make noise, but the right one always at zero.

The machine does have a crap internal mic built in to the screen bezel. If I do either of the above commands, they both work correctly. The stereo VU shows the same activity for both channels.

The machine is a Eee 1015PED, which has Intel integrated sound. Something probably insignificant is that the mic has a 1/4 inch mono plug, and to get it to plug into the Eee, I needed to get a 1/4 female to 1/8 male adapter. The mic's 1/4 plug is mono (duh) and therefore two-conductor, but the adapter I got is stereo, or three conductor (L, R, GND). I don't know if this is tripping something in hardware to tell it it's stereo or something.

I tried the mic on my desktop, which has a SB Audigy 4 (the non-pro flavor) and that has the "Analog Mono Input" function, so that works fine. Is there some way to turn this stereo input into mono input?

General :: Why Does Sha1sum Act Differently With The Same Input

Jun 22, 2010

I'm trying to replicate the behavior of the sha1sum executable in some java code, however, in the process I've discovered that sha1sum appears to behave differently given the same input in two scenarios.

Assume input of '12345' without the single quotes and with no newline.

If I put this data into a file (file1) and run sha1sum from the command line:

However, if I do this, I get a different result:

Using the apache commons-codec jar, I'm able to read in file1, get it's contents, and perform a .shahex() on the content and get the first result. However, I need to get the second result (due to legacy code) and I can't figure out why sha1sum is behaving differently, or what grep is doing to the input.

The system is running CentOS 5.4 with sha1sum 5.97
