General :: Resizing Partition Using Parted

Sep 14, 2010

I have slackware 13.1 installed on my desktop and I have all my hard drive dedicated to it. But now Im thinking about resizing my hard drive so that I can install windows so my brother can play games on it ( probly giving 50 Gigs to windows )I heard that parted ( located on slackware cd 1 ) is what I should use. So I was wondering if I need to backup any important files before doing the resizing? I would also appreciate it if someone could link an good tutorial for doing partition resizing .

Fedora :: Inconsistent Partition Size Between Parted And Df

Apr 17, 2010

I have a 10GB IDE disk that Parted says has a single 10GB partition (/dev/sdb1) which is mounted at /home. However, df and the Gnome file managers see it only as a 3GB partition. It was a 3GB partition when I was using Fedora 9 but the partition was resized to 10GB during the installation of Fedora 11.Can anyone suggest how to make df and Gnome see it as a 10GB partition?

CentOS 5 Hardware :: Partition A 6TB Volume Using Parted?

Feb 17, 2010

I am trying to partition a 6TB volume using parted, but I am a bit confused with the syntax. From the (parted) prompt, I know I should use the command "mkpart primary <start> <end>". I guess that <start> should =0. How do I tell what <end> should be? I want it to fill the entire volume but I don't see how to tell what the exact number should be.

Software :: Parted Doesn't See Display Name When Partition Is Reiser4 Or Btrfs

Aug 6, 2010

Im using parted when doing a new disk. If the disk is ext[234], xfs, jfs, parted displays the partition correctly, but if the partition was formated using reiser4 or btrfs the "File System" part there is nothing, like there is no formating done to the partition.

This is how Im using parted:ex.: parted -s /dev/sda print

Does anyone knows a patch to fix this issue?

Slackware :: Install Slack 13 64bit (GPT And Fdisk) / Command To Use With Parted To Mark The Partition As 82?

Dec 28, 2009

After trying without success change from windows to ubuntu (dual-boot unsolved problems), I decided to try slack as I have seen that user to user support for slack is usually best oriented and faster. But I am having some problems in order to install slack because of GPT support. As I know its a bad idea to start to asking for help without speak what I have tried, lets to this first:

At first I tried just to boot from DVD and went through the install using the help inside the disk. It doesn't work because either fdisk and cfdisk that are suggested in help doesn't offer support to GPT.

After that first try i looked to:url

But also it suggest the use of fdisk. However, it suggested too that I could use another partition application and since I have the live cd for ubuntu, I tried to partition from there and use those partitions for installation.

At first I tried to format as ext4, but i discovered that slack still dont offer support to this format (at least the version that I downloaded). So I tried again but this time using ext3 as format to my / and /home and use the swap offered in the application for use as swap (duh!)But every time I try to install using the dvd it doesnt find my partitions with fdisk, only with the parted command I can see my partition table displayed correctly. However, every time I try to run setup it say that it didnt found and linux partition (swap also when i try to target). So this is my dilemma, I cant use fdisk, in the parted manual (url) it only says that it supports ext2 (not mention ext3) and also i dont find any command to use with parted to mark the partition as 82.I ran through this 2 other posts (url), but as I am still waiting for some update there I decided to ask it here hoping to discover that this is an easy problem.

General :: Running Parted On RAID Device With LVM?

Mar 28, 2011

I have 2 identical disks, /dev/sda and /dev/sdb. I have a raid-2 configuration (/dev/md0) on /dev/sda3 and /dev/sdb3 partitions. On top of /dev/md0, I am running LVM. There are also partitions sda4 and sdb4 following sda3 and sdb3 respectively but the data in there are not important. What I want to do is delete the sda4 and sdb4 partitions and extend sda3 and sdb3 to the end of disk, and grow the md0 and the volume group of course *without* loss of data.

General :: Unetbootin Parted Magic - Shows In Boot List But Won't Boot

Nov 1, 2010

Alright so I'm currently in the process of trying to transfer a wubi install of ubuntu to an actual partition using LVPM. I need to use unetbootin with parted magic mounted (not sure if that's the right term) to my hard disk rather than a bootable flash drive. So I set everything up, downloaded parted magic ISO, ran unetbootin and selected the file everything installed smoothly. I then restart my computer and unetbootin is indeed in the boot list but when I select it, it remains at a black screen. I left it at the black screen for about ten minutes and nothing happened. I've tried a few times and nothing.

Ubuntu :: Install Parted Magic On USB From Live CD

Mar 8, 2010

I want to install Parted Magic on my USB drive from my GParted live Cd. I don't want to install any OS. I have tried the procedure on Parted Magic's site but it hasn't helped.

Note: I am mainly stuck at this step:

Quote:

In Linux, write the Syslinux MBR to the USB drive (this is not needed when you have already a bootable MBR on the USB drive). A copy of mbr.bin is included in the USB version of Parted Magic. It's located in boot/syslinux. Change directory to the root of the USB drive that the Parted Magic files were copied to, and use this command:

cat boot/syslinux/mbr.bin > /dev/sdx

This file is located in this place on my PC as taken from the GParted file manager address bar /media/Leopard/Users/Piyush/Desktop/untitled folder/pmagic-usb-4.8/boot

Ummm... Could anyone write a command for this?

When I run 'parted' and then type 'print' to see the partitions that are available, I see two entries: /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda2. /dev/sda1 is of ext3 type whereas for /dev/sda2 nothing is specified for file system type. The LVM flags are set for /dev/sda2.

When I tried to resize /dev/sda2, it gives me the error "File system type not recognized". let me know how to find out the file system type of the partition.

Hardware :: Can Access Data On HD / But Parted Sees It As Unallocated Space

Jul 11, 2010

I bought a second hard drive, (seagate, 1TB) and followed some instructions about how should i format it. Unfortunately i don't remember where. I ended up with a fully functional disk and copied to it about 400 Gb of data. As far as i knew there was a single 935Gb partition. I needed to shrink the partition to create a smaller one i need in vfat, and every partition manager i tried (gparted, parted, Kde's partition manager, testdisk) sees the disk fine, as a 1TB unallocated space hard drive. I realize, the data was copied directly to /dev/sdb, not /dev/sdb1. I can access the data with no trouble, it gets mounted on boot and on use i have no issue. But i can't edit the partition table, because as far as parted is concerned, it's all unallocated space. I tried running testdisk (even deep) and parted rescue, but they don't see any partitions. Any thoughts? maybe some way of making a new partition table without erasing data=?

Debian Hardware :: Acer C720 Chromebook - SSD Not Detected In Parted Magic

Jun 19, 2015

Parted Magic doesn't detect the SSD for some reason. I've been trying to install ANY form of Linux onto my chromebook, wiping the SSD first and then installing Linux to it. For the last few months actively trying to do so, all has failed. I decided to get an m.2 connector that plugins into a gpu slot to connect it to my desktop (the SSD is micro-sized...) and it fits perfectly, but when opening Parted Magic from a simple USB drive, all my devices show up except my SSD.

Previously, the installations of Linux onto my Chromebook have always failed with a "not enough memory" message, trying all solutions found online and responding to other's posts, they suggested me to do this since they can't see the problem either. I never knew a basic wipe on an SSD, and installation of Linux would be so difficult. Everyone online says "it's so easy even without crouton" and is plug-in-play essentially. No, it is not.

Ubuntu Installation :: Livecd Installer Freezes And Parted Crashes / How Can I Install

Dec 27, 2010

I was trying to fix gparted (it was crashing whenever it started) and then when I would type my password in the login screen, the screen would flash back and then the login screen would come back. If I logged in in a terminal and then did startx, it would just show a black screen. I figured it was broken. I made an Ubuntu 10.10 liveCD and booted it up and clicked on the installer thing and then it froze and an error thing popped up saying Parted crashed.

Essentially what I need to do is install Ubuntu without using the partition GUI.Can I try to find a thing that will let me make an empty EXT4 partition and then a thing to let me install Ubuntu to it?

Ubuntu :: Windows Won't Work After Partition?

Apr 25, 2011

Recently I had some issues with windows so I had my computer formatted and had windows XP and ubuntu 10.10 installed. Seeing that the partition space for ubuntu was too small I attempted to fix this with gparted. I unmounted the windows partition and made a 30 GB partition to expand the ubuntu partition, I was unable to join them and instead started using it as a removable drive, mounting it every time I use it. After the partition Windows stopped working (whenever I attempt to access it from GRUB I am asked if I want to enter windows normally or in safe mode then I am redirected to GRUB).Here is the listing of current partitions, /dev/sda1 is supposed to be windows.Quote:

Disk /dev/sda: 120.0 GB, 120034123776 bytes

I've tried various partitioning commands and gui applications but cant find one that I can give a one line command to to set the partition table, maximum partition size and file system.

General :: Partitioning - Copy GNU Installation From A Smaller Partition To A Bigger Partition?

May 4, 2011

I got a new hard disk for my laptop and I want to move my Gentoo installation from old HDD to new.

Most simple guides recommend use of dd to copy the whole partition byte by byte.

I'm moving to the new drive because I don't have enough space on the old drive, so I don't want to simply clone the partition. Instead I need the destination partition to be bigger. Would dd work well in that case?

Assuming that I use same partition types on the new drive, would I be able to use simple cp with appropriate settings?

General :: Extended Sata Partition Shrunk At 15 Partition Limit - How To Re-enlarge

Jun 2, 2010

extended sata partition shrunk at 15 partition limit, how to re-enlarge i hit the 15 partition limit, forgetting it now exists for sata drives, thinking i would add more. upon creation of the 15th, it squished the end of the extended partition to meet the last logical partition, leaving a large unallocated portion after the extended partition, which seemingly nothing can be done with, just sat being wasted space. i have since deleted a few of those partitions, but so far have still failed to find a way to recoup the unallocated space back into the extended partition.

[URL]

if necessary, i'll do it the painful long winded way of backing up and starting the extended partition again from scratch, but i really rather wouldnt have to do that. i'm sure there must be a way of telling the extended partition to once again reach the end of the drive.
