View 6 RepliesI am preparing for RHCE. While doing the lab I renamed /etc/grub/grub.conf as grub1.conf. Now (obviously) system boots on grub> prompt. Can I recover without using a bootable CD? Another problem that I encountered was, while doing lab for fdisk, I used command umount -al. Now, fdisk -l is not listing the partitions but giving a message:- /proc/partitions does not exist. If I reboot the system this is restored.

But now Im thinking about resizing my hard drive so that I can install windows so my brother can play games on it ( probly giving 50 Gigs to windows )I heard that parted ( located on slackware cd 1 ) is what I should use. So I was wondering if I need to backup any important files before doing the resizing? I would also appreciate it if someone could link an good tutorial for doing partition resizing .

I have a 10GB IDE disk that Parted says has a single 10GB partition (/dev/sdb1) which is mounted at /home. However, df and the Gnome file managers see it only as a 3GB partition. It was a 3GB partition when I was using Fedora 9 but the partition was resized to 10GB during the installation of Fedora 11.Can anyone suggest how to make df and Gnome see it as a 10GB partition?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI want to install Parted Magic on my USB drive from my GParted live Cd. I don't want to install any OS. I have tried the procedure on Parted Magic's site but it hasn't helped.
Note: I am mainly stuck at this step:
Quote:
In Linux, write the Syslinux MBR to the USB drive (this is not needed when you have already a bootable MBR on the USB drive). A copy of mbr.bin is included in the USB version of Parted Magic. It's located in boot/syslinux. Change directory to the root of the USB drive that the Parted Magic files were copied to, and use this command:
cat boot/syslinux/mbr.bin > /dev/sdx
This file is located in this place on my PC as taken from the GParted file manager address bar /media/Leopard/Users/Piyush/Desktop/untitled folder/pmagic-usb-4.8/boot
Ummm... Could anyone write a command for this?
I'v tried to resize disk partition with GNU Parted resize command, but it didn't work.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have 2 identical disks, /dev/sda and /dev/sdb. I have a raid-2 configuration (/dev/md0) on /dev/sda3 and /dev/sdb3 partitions. On top of /dev/md0, I am running LVM. There are also partitions sda4 and sdb4 following sda3 and sdb3 respectively but the data in there are not important. What I want to do is delete the sda4 and sdb4 partitions and extend sda3 and sdb3 to the end of disk, and grow the md0 and the volume group of course *without* loss of data.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am trying to partition a 6TB volume using parted, but I am a bit confused with the syntax. From the (parted) prompt, I know I should use the command "mkpart primary <start> <end>". I guess that <start> should =0. How do I tell what <end> should be? I want it to fill the entire volume but I don't see how to tell what the exact number should be.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I run 'parted' and then type 'print' to see the partitions that are available, I see two entries: /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda2. /dev/sda1 is of ext3 type whereas for /dev/sda2 nothing is specified for file system type. The LVM flags are set for /dev/sda2.
When I tried to resize /dev/sda2, it gives me the error "File system type not recognized". let me know how to find out the file system type of the partition.
I bought a second hard drive, (seagate, 1TB) and followed some instructions about how should i format it. Unfortunately i don't remember where. I ended up with a fully functional disk and copied to it about 400 Gb of data. As far as i knew there was a single 935Gb partition. I needed to shrink the partition to create a smaller one i need in vfat, and every partition manager i tried (gparted, parted, Kde's partition manager, testdisk) sees the disk fine, as a 1TB unallocated space hard drive. I realize, the data was copied directly to /dev/sdb, not /dev/sdb1. I can access the data with no trouble, it gets mounted on boot and on use i have no issue. But i can't edit the partition table, because as far as parted is concerned, it's all unallocated space. I tried running testdisk (even deep) and parted rescue, but they don't see any partitions. Any thoughts? maybe some way of making a new partition table without erasing data=?

Does anyone knows a patch to fix this issue?
Parted Magic doesn't detect the SSD for some reason. I've been trying to install ANY form of Linux onto my chromebook, wiping the SSD first and then installing Linux to it. For the last few months actively trying to do so, all has failed. I decided to get an m.2 connector that plugins into a gpu slot to connect it to my desktop (the SSD is micro-sized...) and it fits perfectly, but when opening Parted Magic from a simple USB drive, all my devices show up except my SSD.
Previously, the installations of Linux onto my Chromebook have always failed with a "not enough memory" message, trying all solutions found online and responding to other's posts, they suggested me to do this since they can't see the problem either. I never knew a basic wipe on an SSD, and installation of Linux would be so difficult. Everyone online says "it's so easy even without crouton" and is plug-in-play essentially. No, it is not.
I was trying to fix gparted (it was crashing whenever it started) and then when I would type my password in the login screen, the screen would flash back and then the login screen would come back. If I logged in in a terminal and then did startx, it would just show a black screen. I figured it was broken. I made an Ubuntu 10.10 liveCD and booted it up and clicked on the installer thing and then it froze and an error thing popped up saying Parted crashed.
Essentially what I need to do is install Ubuntu without using the partition GUI.Can I try to find a thing that will let me make an empty EXT4 partition and then a thing to let me install Ubuntu to it?
The problem is when I boot from the lubuntu CD & select Try Lubuntu or Install Lubuntu the computer hangs. Xubuntu 10.04 was aready installed & I could easily boot to it. I thought may be some partition table error is causing that issue & I deleted all the existing partitions with Parted Magic Cd in Console Mode.
NB: When I tried to boot to the Parted Magic graphical session the PC hanged then too.I am totally confused. Cant understand what is going wrong here. I am now left with a broken system.
After trying without success change from windows to ubuntu (dual-boot unsolved problems), I decided to try slack as I have seen that user to user support for slack is usually best oriented and faster. But I am having some problems in order to install slack because of GPT support. As I know its a bad idea to start to asking for help without speak what I have tried, lets to this first:
At first I tried just to boot from DVD and went through the install using the help inside the disk. It doesn't work because either fdisk and cfdisk that are suggested in help doesn't offer support to GPT.
After that first try i looked to:url
But also it suggest the use of fdisk. However, it suggested too that I could use another partition application and since I have the live cd for ubuntu, I tried to partition from there and use those partitions for installation.
At first I tried to format as ext4, but i discovered that slack still dont offer support to this format (at least the version that I downloaded). So I tried again but this time using ext3 as format to my / and /home and use the swap offered in the application for use as swap (duh!)But every time I try to install using the dvd it doesnt find my partitions with fdisk, only with the parted command I can see my partition table displayed correctly. However, every time I try to run setup it say that it didnt found and linux partition (swap also when i try to target). So this is my dilemma, I cant use fdisk, in the parted manual (url) it only says that it supports ext2 (not mention ext3) and also i dont find any command to use with parted to mark the partition as 82.I ran through this 2 other posts (url), but as I am still waiting for some update there I decided to ask it here hoping to discover that this is an easy problem.
I used Ubuntu before, without problems but since the 10.04 version it won't recognize my partitions. I formated my laptop and partitioned it, installed Windows 7 64bit, which I need for my work, and wanted now to install Ubuntu 10.04/10. I then used GParted to check my Harddisk and it is having troubles to recognize my partitions, too while Windows finds them. GParted is giving me an error message saying my partitions are oversized. I am still in the beginning of my Linux experiences and so I don't know what to do. I have two 250GB harddisks (how Windows recognizes them),

I have vista and opensuse 11.2 on my computer, the problem is i can't open ext3 partitions from vista but i can the other way. I tried Ext2fsd but the linux partition is always in a read only mood even when i change this option. Also, all folders are empty I downloaded the program as admin and compatable with XP SP2.
View 3 Replies View RelatedXubuntu 9.04 installation CD not detecting any of the current partitions. This all started when I reinstalled windows XP a few days ago. After, the computer wouldn't boot into GRUB and would boot directly into windows.Other threads have dealt with a similar issue, that of overlapping partitions causing libparted/parted/gparted to detect the whole drive as unallocated space. The problem in these threads seemed to be a corrupted partition table, in which the partitions overlapped with each other. So of course I checked the output of fdisk -l for overlapping partitions, but I don't see any obvious overlapping partitions. I've noticed that the partition that used to be linux swap isn't showing up in the partition table at all. I might just be missing something simple here and would like another set of eyes to help me figure this one out. Does the problem have anything to do with the partition table being out of order (ie. not in order of what regions they cover on the drive)? From the liveCD I've run
Code:
sudo fdisk -lu
sudo sfdisk -d
sudo parted /dev/sda print
and have received the following output:
Code:
ubuntu@ubuntu:/mnt$ sudo fdisk -lu

I've installed Arch Linux onto my Western Digital SATA drive.I love it, best ever, however, I need the fglrx proprietry driver for better 3-d performace, and decided to create a new partition. I decided to install Linux Mint.Sadly, in all my noobishness, I forgot about the 4 primary partition limit (oops!) and as I have /, /home, swap, and /boot partitions (all primary) already installed, I have run into a bit of a problem.I resized my /home partition (almost 500GB) to about 225, and was then told I have over 200GB unusable space. Is it possible for me to change at least 1 of my primary partitions to logical partitions AND keep all the data intact (AND edit the arch configuration so that it'll still work) so I can install a second linux? I sincerely doubt it
View 10 Replies View RelatedI am installing Ubuntu on the same hard drive as Windows 7. The partitions of Windows 7 have already occupied the left part of the hard drive. From left to right, the Windows partitions are one partition for Windows booting, one for Windows OS and software installation, and one for data which is planned to mount on Ubuntu. I was wondering how to arrange the order of partitions of root, home and swap, i.e. which is on the left just besides one Windows partition, which is in the middle and which is on the far right?

Alright so I'm currently in the process of trying to transfer a wubi install of ubuntu to an actual partition using LVPM. I need to use unetbootin with parted magic mounted (not sure if that's the right term) to my hard disk rather than a bootable flash drive. So I set everything up, downloaded parted magic ISO, ran unetbootin and selected the file everything installed smoothly. I then restart my computer and unetbootin is indeed in the boot list but when I select it, it remains at a black screen. I left it at the black screen for about ten minutes and nothing happened. I've tried a few times and nothing.
