I want to dual boot Fedora 11 and Windows Vista, and the last time I tried I deleted my Windows Vista (big no no). So, I've made a partition of about 30GB, and I'm trying to go through the installation (from the live CD), but I don't know quite what to do? If I select Shrink existing disk, it doesn't let me do it for any amount that I put in, by the way.

I allowed the set-up to install Ubuntu next to Windows XP and to let me choose which OS boots at start-up. Upon restarting my computer after installation, however, there is no boot-screen and my computer goes straight to WinXP. I have done some reading and it seems like I need to install GRUB, but I'm really not sure if this is really the case or if I am missing something else entirely.

View 1 Replies View RelatedIn the end, I am trying to dual boot my MacBook Pro with Fedora 14 and OSX. I am having issues getting the bootloader working for Fedora though. I have setup my partition table like this:
/sda1 - EFI
/sda2 - OSX
/sda3 - /boot
/sda4 - LVM (root, home, swap)
Fedora installs fine, and the bootloader installs to sda3. I use rEFIt to allow me to boot to my Linux partition, but when I do I get "no bootable device". I have done a little reading and have found people have problems doing with this with GRUB (default Fedora bootloader). So what I would like to do is try installing LILO or maybe even GRUB2. how to change the bootloader Fedora installs from the Live CD?
I'm a newbie and installed Fedora 7 with a dual boot with Windows 7 64 bit. I can boot Windows or Fedora. I have an AMD Athlon(tm)II X4 630 Processor 2.80 GHz. In Fedora there is no sound or internet access. (Windows sound and internet is fine). The sound error message is "Don't have the right GS Streamer plugins installed or sound card not configured". System reads a Nvidia corp unknown device 0774. For the internet I use DSL internet connection. I don't know how to proceed. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI backed up all my data and installed F15. The installation went fine. I did everything like I normally do. This is not my first rodeo so I am pretty sure I didn't do anything. When it goes to GRUB all it shows is Fedora and "Other". No memcheck, Fedora recovery, nothing. When I went to Other expecting to boot into Windows it said BOOTMGR not found. Normally I deal with Ubuntu though. The partition was not formatted. Everything is their. There is a file on the C drive called BOOTMGR. So how do I get back to being able to booting Windows? I am pretty good with Linux and I know my way around the terminal so you don't have to take it easy on me.

Few days ago windows got corrupt and I have to reinstall it. I put windows 7 now and as usual it erased grub. So to reinstall I put the fedora 12 installation CD on and followed some usual setup steps. When I got the command line I issued the command "grub-install /dev/sda" (sda not hda because It showed bunch of sda, sda1..) but surprisingly it said grub command not found. I remember doing it before while it worked fine.

I'm currently looking at putting Fedora onto a flash memory card to test it works OK on the hardware, before installing it to the hard disk. The problem I've got is that the boot sector is occupied by WDE software (TrueCrypt). Will this pose a problem for dual-booting XP with Fedora, or will GRUB move the boot loader in the usual way?

I installed grub on the Fedora disk so as to not touch the windows disk at all.
Prior to installation, in the bios, I set the Fedora disk (sdb) first in the boot sequence, and then XP (sda) so that the grub loader would boot up by default. (If I set the windows drive first then the system bypasses grub and loads straight into windows.)
My system can now boot up into Fedora fine, but if I select windows from the grub loader menu I just get a blinking cursor - windows will not boot.What do I have to do so that grub can boot into XP?
I already know what the problem is, which is that I have an AGP Nvidia graphic card. When I try to boot the live cd it freezes. I've done some research and I've already tried using "nouveau.noagp=1" as a Boot Option from the live cd. But it says unknown boot option ignoring. And it still fails to boot up. Im anxious to begin using Fedora.
When it is trying to boot...it also says IO APIC resources could not be allocated.
I get it to boot to the loading screen and it gets to what looks like 99% loaded and it just sticks, i have tried multiple downloads, different cds and did "verify and boot" just to be sure and it just sticks and does nothing?

I'm trying to install F11 in my new laptop [URL] and I'm unfortunately about to give up, but I want to give this option. What I want to do is use the live cd (on a usb stick) to boot on a text-only session. Supposedly the way to do that is type "linux text" on the boot prompt but the problem is that I can't even get there. After booting I get the grub menu with two options: boot, and verify and boot. Hitting esc doesn't bring me to the boot prompt. I can get to the grub menu, but I'm not sure what to do from there. And I can edit the boot and kernel options, but I'm not sure whether that will allow me to log in a text-only session.

My trouble is that the F13 Live CD hangs during boot. I've checked the hashes of the downloaded ISO files, and done burns on multiple media. During booting with the Live CD, my box hangs and I have to use the physical power button to turn off the box.
I've tried the 64-bit KDE spin (my preferred choice), the 64-bit GNOME version, and also the 32-bit KDE spin, and all of them hang at the same point. Removing the "quiet" boot option shows that it hangs after setting up my built-in card reader. When I installed Suse 10.3 on this same machine, I had to use the flags "acpi=off" and "brokenmodules=pata_it821x". Would the syntax be the same if I wanted to try with those boot options with the F13 Live CD?
Using the ISO files in VirtualBox inside my working Suse install works just fine.
When i boot the fedora image from a dvd i'm not being taken to the fedora live system screen, instead i see a bunch a words on a black screen (looks like DOS)...am i having compatibility issues or what? ive tried 32bit, 64bit versions as well as different desktops. does anyone have any ideas? my laptop is brand new: toshiba e205 running windows 7 ultimate..

View 3 Replies View RelatedI was using Ubuntu 9.10, until I got a new graphics card (Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT). After I got that upgrade, Ubuntu no longer supported that card for some reason, so I decided to try Linux Mint since it was a close relative to Ubuntu. Still no support for the video card.
I've always wanted to try Fedora so I decided to grab the x86_64 live cd and burn it. I stick it into my disk drive and it boots where it shows me the options to "Boot" "Verify and Boot" "Boot from Hard Disk" and one other option.
I tried the Boot option, and after selecting that, everything stalls, and my display turns off (not the entire monitor, just the display). I tried Verify and Boot, and still no luck.
I have also tried the i686 live cd and the same issue. It can not be the way I am burning it, cause I've gotten other live cd's to work with the same method of burning. Is it that Fedora does not support the card?
I am trying to get the GNOME version up and running.

I did notice when installing F10 that it remapped my drives, making the WIndows and therefore boot drive /dev/sdb and the Linux Drive /dev/sda. I know this requires changing some of the drive designations (hd0,0 etc) but I've done it twice and ended up only being able to boot into Windows.
I was able to install Fedora 10 from the Live KDE CD, however I can't boot it.
I placed it on /dev/hda4 of an IDE disk, while on /dev/hda1 I have a RedHat 9 Linux, /home is on /dev/hda2 and the swap is on /dev/hda3. I'm not sure if RedHat 9 and Fedora 10 can coexist on the same HD.
There's an option in the Live KDE CD boot install, which allows one to select:
boot from hard disk:
Do you know what to type in in order to direct Fedora to boot from /dev/hda4 (who may be /dev/sda4 as seen by Fedora)?
P.S. For the time being, I want to forget about Grub or LILO and see if I can boot it this way first. I have LILO working, it boots Windows from a separate disk and RedHat 9 from /dev/hda1.
Well Fedora 14 sees my Emu soundcard right out of the gate with the live cd! I have windows 7 installed right now. I would like to install Fedora 14 from the live cd to have a duel boot setup. What I am trying to do is just give Fedora 60GB of the drive and keep the rest for Winows. How can I go about this with the live cd. I am sure it's been covered to death but I couldn't really find it.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have a PC with three HD's. My primary hard drive has a single partition and contains Win XP SP3. I have a second hard drive which I use to store junk (pictures, movies, etc). The third, 60GB HD, I just put into my PC and I wanted to install Fedora 11 onto it. I want to have a dual boot system with WinXP being the default boot. I downloaded the latest build of Fedora 11, created a LiveCD out of it and I tried to install the OS onto this third new hard drive. I installed the OS, I told it to use the entire third HD and to have a dual boot setup and make the WinXP OS be the default boot. The installation seemed to go without any problems. However, after restarting the PC, the PC stops booting right after the DELL screen. It gives me a cursor and that's it. It just sits there. I have tried redoing the install about 4 different times now and no matter how I change the different installation options, I get the same result. Now I can't even boot into XP even after I disconnect the third drive. I am guessing that the dual boot got screwed up; I just don't know how to fix it and more importantly, how to install Fedora, dual boot.

I installed Fedora 10 in my second hard drive and the distro is great. But my problem is that now I cannot get into the Ubuntu install. If I switch cables to the drives, Vista will be installed on drive 1. Nothing will be installed on drive 0. If I then install Fedora 10 on drive 0, will it automatically detect Vista on drive 1 and allow me the option of using Grub or something else to boot it? I want to avoid having Vista overwrite my MBR, but I don't want to piss my wife off because she can't access windows for two weeks while I figure out how to customize Grub or install something else.
