General :: PC Won't Boot After New Fedora/Win XP Dual Boot Install?

Sep 7, 2009

I have a PC with three HD's. My primary hard drive has a single partition and contains Win XP SP3. I have a second hard drive which I use to store junk (pictures, movies, etc). The third, 60GB HD, I just put into my PC and I wanted to install Fedora 11 onto it. I want to have a dual boot system with WinXP being the default boot. I downloaded the latest build of Fedora 11, created a LiveCD out of it and I tried to install the OS onto this third new hard drive. I installed the OS, I told it to use the entire third HD and to have a dual boot setup and make the WinXP OS be the default boot. The installation seemed to go without any problems. However, after restarting the PC, the PC stops booting right after the DELL screen. It gives me a cursor and that's it. It just sits there. I have tried redoing the install about 4 different times now and no matter how I change the different installation options, I get the same result. Now I can't even boot into XP even after I disconnect the third drive. I am guessing that the dual boot got screwed up; I just don't know how to fix it and more importantly, how to install Fedora, dual boot.

General :: Fedora 11 - Dual Boot Installation From Live CD

Oct 8, 2009

I want to dual boot Fedora 11 and Windows Vista, and the last time I tried I deleted my Windows Vista (big no no). So, I've made a partition of about 30GB, and I'm trying to go through the installation (from the live CD), but I don't know quite what to do? If I select Shrink existing disk, it doesn't let me do it for any amount that I put in, by the way.

General :: Install Fedora 13 On My Dual Boot - Windows-7

Jun 30, 2010

I am planing to install fedora 13 on my dual boot (windows-7 + fedora) laptop. Previously some one helped me installing fedora on my laptop. Below let me mention the my file system architecture as the question is related to it. It's a 320 GB hard drive.

1. First 250 MB primary partition (used to be for /boot, which is currently unallocated, because in last installation I chose fedora to install automatically).

2. Next 120 GB windows primary partition.

3. Next 200 GB Logical partition

a. First 125 GB for windows backup

b. rest for Linux (500 MB + 60 GB).

As Linux was installed later thus it wrote the boot partition itself. I want the boot partition in the first 250 MB partition (reason, to be safe, I don't want to mess up with the master boot record while playing with Linux), also need to install fedora 13. The architecture I want is following:

1. first 250 MB: /boot

2. Next 120 GB: Windows

3. Logical:

a. First 125 GB: Windows backup.

b. Next 4 GB: /swap

c. Rest: /root -- I want to install Fedora here

So, what I plan to do is to whip out all the current Linux file systems and insert fedora dvd and install according to my criteria!

Now my questions are:

1. since currently Linux has the master boot record, will it cause any problem for the machine to boot up from installation dvd, if I whip off all the current Linux partitions? (Or in other words, does installation/ live-CD need a master boot record to boot? -- I am guessing once I reinstall Linux, booting is not a problem).

2. Once Linux is whipped off, can windows boot up automatically?

3. Is there any worry of messing up windows, specially its boot sector(off course I will take precaution not touching windows partitions!)

General :: Fedora 15 Beta Installation Knocks Out Dual Boot

Apr 24, 2011

I backed up all my data and installed F15. The installation went fine. I did everything like I normally do. This is not my first rodeo so I am pretty sure I didn't do anything. When it goes to GRUB all it shows is Fedora and "Other". No memcheck, Fedora recovery, nothing. When I went to Other expecting to boot into Windows it said BOOTMGR not found. Normally I deal with Ubuntu though. The partition was not formatted. Everything is their. There is a file on the C drive called BOOTMGR. So how do I get back to being able to booting Windows? I am pretty good with Linux and I know my way around the terminal so you don't have to take it easy on me.

General :: Dual Boot - Replace Vista With Win7 Without Affecting Fedora?

Oct 9, 2010

I had Windows Vista Business in my compaq presario CQ40-145 TU laptop, over which I installed Fedora 13, making the system dual boot. The Windows is set to be the default OS. Now I want to replace Vista with Windows 7 professional without affecting Fedora. As far as I understand, during boot up, the system enters Fedora's booting process and then gets redirected to Windows, and it is not directly windows even if the default OS is windows.

The reason behind not disturbing fedora is the updates, extra software and packages installed and the pain and time it took me to make my speakers, wlan and flash player work in it. I even don't remember the exact process of what I did. I don't have now so much time to search for it again. So I will take up only that way in which Fedora is not affected at all. And the second problem is my DVD drive is not working at all. So I'll like using USB stick for the same.

Fedora Installation :: 10 - WDE And Dual-Boot - Boot Sector Is Occupied By WDE Software (TrueCrypt)

May 17, 2009

I currently have XP installed on a NetBook (Samsung NC10), and would like to run Fedora on it. I'm currently looking at putting Fedora onto a flash memory card to test it works OK on the hardware, before installing it to the hard disk. The problem I've got is that the boot sector is occupied by WDE software (TrueCrypt). Will this pose a problem for dual-booting XP with Fedora, or will GRUB move the boot loader in the usual way?

Fedora Installation :: Dual Boot With Xp - Grub Can't Boot Into Windows?

Jan 10, 2010

I just set up a dual boot on a system with fedora 12 and XP. XP in on one hard drive (sda) and Fedora on a second hard drive (sdb).

I installed grub on the Fedora disk so as to not touch the windows disk at all.

Prior to installation, in the bios, I set the Fedora disk (sdb) first in the boot sequence, and then XP (sda) so that the grub loader would boot up by default. (If I set the windows drive first then the system bypasses grub and loads straight into windows.)

My system can now boot up into Fedora fine, but if I select windows from the grub loader menu I just get a blinking cursor - windows will not boot. What do I have to do so that grub can boot into XP?

General :: Windows XP Failed To Boot In Dual Boot System?

Jul 5, 2011

The problem is this: I have a 320gb HDD splitted in 4 partitions. When I first installed Windows XP I formatted the HDD in 3 (Windows system partition, Media partition and another one I left for Linux). However Linux requires another partition for swap. Everything was just fine. One day Windows stopped working and I tried re-installing it. After the system was ready to start, Windows failed to boot with "NTLDR is missing" message. I tried to recover the Master boot record, even replaced NTLDR manually - nothing worked. I read that in order a HDD to be partitioned in more than 3 parts the so called "extended" partitions must be created. I think this may cause the problem but I don't want to wipe out everything (I have more than 100 GB of books most of which are not available anymore in the same locations I have downloaded them)

wanting a dual-boot, 500GB hdd was formatted as above, Win Vista x64 Recovery CD was created, and antiX-M11 (as Swift Linux 0_1_1) installed. Now, at startup, machine boots to antiX and not Vista. User wants it the other way around. I think I should have reordered the partitions and not installed GRUB in MBR. EasyBCD is the preferred boot loader for User. This is a learning experience but due to time constraints and not being at my home where references are available, EasyBCD is on a USB stick -- should I boot to the Vista Recovery CD and then try to install EasyBCD to sda3 from it, uninstall antiX (but this will not fix the MBR problem, will it?), or edit fstab or what

Fedora ::installed Fedora 15 KDE (with Dual Boot Win7) On Computer Has Blackened Out

Sep 4, 2011

I have recently installed Fedora 15 KDE (with Dual Boot Win7) on my computer:Dell Optiplex 330, Intel Core2Duo- 2.53 GHz, 32 Bit, 2GB RamnVIDIA 8400 GSWhile going through the Guides mentioned here: for F15, I tried to install nVIDIA Drivers after updating the Kernel.suyum update kernel*rebootHowever it gave me some errors and then I did try the following method (as described in Missingbox studio guide)su -yum install akmod-nvidia xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.i686 bootconf-gui kernel*develfollowed by Reboot.

I start my computer, I get the screen which shows that Fedora will boot in 3 seconds. This is followed by a black screen with a "Blue followed by white" Bar running towards right (where Fedora 15 is written)....It stays there for ever (I waited for 3 hours and then switched off my computer).Presently I am writing this post through Windows7.Is there any way I can repair Fedora through Win7 or by any other means.---------- Post added at 10:57 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:51 AM ----------I remember the instructions (given by leigh123linux) that we should provide the following information

Fedora Installation :: Dual Boot / Windows Vista Wouldn't Boot Because "BootMGR Was Missing"?

Sep 4, 2010

I had installed Fedora 13 on an unused partition of my ATA hard-drive yesterday. The primary OS here was Windows Vista.

Anyway, everything was working fne for coupla hours after which I had to restart F13 for some reason. This is when all the trouble began ..

Fedora wouldn't boot cause of some "power issues" - there were none. Windows Vista wouldn't boot because "BootMGR was missing"

I figured if I removed Fedora using the live CD - format the partition, it would help. It didn't. Well, atleast the partition got formatted. I tried re-installing F13 from the live CD but it doesn't finish the process - saying a command, something to do with 'shutdown' is not valid.

I tried repairing Vista from the Installation DVD but it is unable to do so.

Right now, on rebooting the computing, I enter the 'grub' console. I tried using grub commands to boot "Windows" from the (hd0,0) partition like thus,

Code:
grub> rootnoverify (hd0,0)
grub> makeactive
grub> chainloader +1
grub> boot
But it still maintains that "BootMGR is missing" .
