Ubuntu :: IP Address Of Remote Computer To Establish SSH Connection

Jul 9, 2011

I want to transfer files from my laptop to my desktop remotely over the net. Both these computers access net via different service providers and have dynamically assigned IP addresses. If I know the IP address, I can use ssh to accomplish my task. However if I don't have physical access to the desktop, I cannot know the IP address. Is there a way by which a the desktop sends its public IP address to me so that I can establish ssh connection ?

General :: Get Name (address) Of Computer From Which SSH Login Was Made

Mar 12, 2010

After logging onto a linux machine via SSH, I would like to be able to retrieve the name of the computer from which the connection was made. Ideally I am looking for some command like hostname or uname but that would retrieve the name of the client instead of the host.

This information must be accessible somewhere, since when I log on I get a message that contains the clinent name from the last login:

Last login: Thu Mar 11 18:42:01 2010 from my.address.com

The reason for wanting to do this is to be able to take different action in my .login file depending on which computer I am currently connecting from.

General :: Network Connection - Doesn't Assign Any IP Address To Machine

Feb 11, 2009

I have installed Ubuntu 8.10 Server Edition on Virtual Box. When I start the virtual machine I do not have connection to my home network. The router I have does not assign any IP address to this machine. Now I have some questions which I am finding hard to find answers for over the internet and other forums.

If I do have a network interface (I checked this using ifconfig -a) then is there a command to actually make the operating system connect to that network (something like repair on windows)?? Also what is the difference between a network interface with alias eth0 and eth5? I know that when it was eth0 the virtual machine used to connect to the network automatically. Now that it is eth5 it does not! I do not know however if this is related.

General :: Unable To Get An Internet Connection - "No Address Found"

Apr 23, 2010

I have little to no understanding of this system. I am currently setting up for a work from home job that requires I use a disk in my CD drive when booting my PC. I believe this disk runs an ISOLinux operating system.

The system appears to boot properly; however, I am receiving an error that states "No Address Found" and I am unable to get an internet connection. When running Windows Vista, my ethernet connection runs fine. I'm sure I am missing one small piece of the puzzle that will make this work.

Networking :: Set An Ip Address On A Computer Remotely?

Mar 20, 2011

there is a way to set an ip address on a computer remotely. Here's my issue : Have a debian computer (plug computer) on which, after upgrade, i m not able to log in back anymore. At the moment it seems i have no chanche to connect something like a monitor but i m pretty sure the computer it boots up cause wireless is on and i can see ssid and mac address of the ap.

I ve tried to assign an ip to the mac address (from my laptop) by arp and in the table it shows the link between the mac and ip, but i m unable to ping the ip after that. I was trying to think of maybe set up a dhcp server from my laptop and see if the plugcomputer gets an ip automatically, but i m not sure if it is working and at the moment i have little experience on set up a dhcp server on linux (sabayon). Do you think is it possible to manage the network card of my plug computer by eth/wlan from my laptop?

Networking :: Connect To External Computer Using Local Address?

Apr 9, 2011

I couldn't find an answer to this question (not including vpn) on different threads so decided to eventually post it, though it's probably easy one. I would like to connect to some application on known IP and port in the internet from my LAN computer. However to do so (I have some application, not any administrative constraints or not being allowed to) I would like to use local addresses. So, let's say - I want to connect to the external host VV.XX.YY.ZZ, port AA using 192.168.EE.FF port BB. Baically so far I have limitation in my application (too many places for possible error, to correct it right now - will change it in future). Is it possible that after my application sends request to 192.168.1.EE port BB, my Linux transparently translates it to VV.XX.YY.ZZ:AA? I tried iptables tutorials and some forums, but nothing seems to be addressing this issue. I don't know if it's event possible with iptables but am pretty sure this should be possible.

Security :: Block Computer From Connecting To A Specific IP Address?

Feb 13, 2010

I was taking a peek at the active connections shown by the Firestarter GUI and noticed the following (the source is my computer):

SourceDestinationPortServiceProgram
192.168.0.11266.235.133.4280HTTP

I closed all Internet related apps and the connection persisted. After a reboot it did not reconnect (yet). The IP address appears to belong to esomniture.com - some sort of web analytics company. How do I prevent my computer from connecting to these rascals. I have found a lot of documentation regarding stopping inbound connections to services on my computer but not the other way. I have various filtering addons installed in Firefox however, this connection seems to be at a lower level as no program is specified as being responsible for the connection.

OpenSUSE Network :: Having IP Address Via DHCP But No Connection?

Apr 9, 2010

I've just installed opensuse 11.2 with the network installation iso. During the installation, it has got the IP via DHCP without any problem, and I has downloaded all the needed packets without problems... But when the installation finish.I have no network connection It's strange, because I have IP address, I get the IP from the DHCP server, and I can see the IP addreess if I do "ifconfig", the default route and even the DNS servers in the resolv.conf file; but I cannot ping my gateway (that is the DHCP server as well!!), I cannot ping anything in my network and either anything in internet. I see a network error at the start, but it finally gets the ip address. In the dmesg, the last message repeats over and over. The machine is a Hyper-V virtual machine, but as I said... I worked very well during the installation, I don't know what is going on. I've tried to reinstall, but it doesn't make any difference

I am trying to find out if it is possible for me to have a static ip address with my 3G usb modem ? I am using gnome network manager in Ubuntu 10.04 but it there is no option for me there for a static IPV4 address. I know with a wireless or ethernet connection you would modify /et/dhcp3/dhclient.conf and/or /etc/network/interfaces. I don't think those two would do for a PPP connection. When I go to /etc/ppp/ I see no .conf file that I could modify.

Slackware :: External Address And Connection Refused

Feb 8, 2010

My wife takes her laptop on her travels but recently has been getting a connection refused when attempting to connect to our home server. The only reason I believe this is occurring is because of iptables blocking certain IP addresses which I don't want to delete for SPAM prevention.

What configuration what be both secure and relatively straight forward. Initially configured mac filtering but then realised this would not be appropriate under these circumstances..

Also there is no specific logging in either postfix or dovecot about connection refused.

Fedora Networking :: No Internet Connection With Static IP Address?

Feb 17, 2009

I am a windows user with no linux experience prior to Friday. Im setting up a music server (SqueezeCenter) running Fedora 10.

With the help of posts of this site Ive made good progress with complicated stuffnamely getting Samba and VNC working. My Fedora machine and my windows machines now see each others shared files, and I can control my Fedora machine from my windows machine. (The Fedora machine will ultimately be headless.)

But Im having trouble with a seemingly simple issue setting up my Fedora box with a static IP address. With DHCP enabled on my network Ethernet adapter, all works fine. I then used the System>Administration>Network menu to disable DHCP and to assign the same IP address that DHCP chose. When I do this, two cases need to be distinguished:

1. If I keep the box checked for Controlled by Network Manager, the Network Manager Applet reports a network connection, I nevertheless cannot access the internet, but my Fedora machine is able to communicate with my Squeezebox music player (connected to my network via my DSL modem Ethernet connections, and with a fixed IP address). 2. If I uncheck the box Controlled by Network Manger, then the Network Manager Applet reports no network connection and my Fedora machine is not able to communicate with my Squeezebox music player (and I of course have no internet connectivity).

Ive seen references on other posts suggesting that the Network Manager service be disabled. But I see no way to manually configure the network.

Ubuntu Networking :: Cannot Obtain IP Address On Wired Connection

Jan 30, 2010

I am having a persistent problem with getting a wired network connection under a recent install of Ubuntu 9.10. The network manager will show the wired network as 'disconnected' after a restart. This is true whether I am connected directly to my ISP's modem, or through the Linksys router that I usually use.The output of ifconfig suggests that eth0 is not being assigned an IP address:Code:I have reached the limits of my own ingenuity.

Ubuntu Networking :: Connection Failed: Unable To Get IP Address

Apr 24, 2010

So I got Ubuntu 9.10 on my laptop working really neat and wanted to upgrade my desktop to 9.10 as well. So I reinstalled Ubuntu there and now I can't connect to my network anymore....

I have a usb wireless adapter (currently Sitecom as I bought a new one today to hopefully fix it, but ended up at exactly the same problem as with my old adapter). The network manager I'm using now is Wicd since some topics I was looking through were about malfunctioning GNOME network-manager (which I removed) and suggested to try this. The GNOME network-manager kept prompting to insert my WEP network key which was a correct one. When I removed all security from the network it didn't prompt anything anymore but just failed to connect. The Wicd network manager is so nice to tell me that it cannot obtain the IP address however, so I suspect that this is my main issue... but I have no idea what I can do about this? Tried using a static IP and then I get the message "Connection failed: Could not contact the wireless access point."

I feel powerless as my knowledge here is just lacking..

Programming :: Telnet: Connect To Address 127.0.0.1: Connection Refused

Jul 21, 2010

I want to create script wherein it will check the application if its running. The command that I'll be using to check the application is telnet (if you can recommend others, that's ok). I've an application and it is listening to port 1808. If I do telnet localhost 1808, the response is :

Code:

[root@test ~]# telnet localhost 1808
Trying 127.0.0.1...
telnet: connect to address 127.0.0.1: Connection refused

What I want to happen is if the response is like to code above, it will execute a commands. Obviously, above code knows that the application is not working so I need to execute a commands. I created a script before using expect but I don't think it will work because I haven't establish a shell yet unlike successful telnet I could spawn expect.
