General :: Difference Between "frugal" And "full" Installations Of Puppy?
Jul 31, 2009
I still don't understand the difference between: 1. copying the files from the cd to the hd (frugal) 2. installing the files on the cd to the hd (full)

I am new to Linux and I am trying to install puppy on an old IBM thinkpad 600X (10gb hd, 196mb ram) When installing puppy from a cd, it loads up and does the kernel stuff before "Searching for Puppy files in computer disk drives" - this takes about 10 minutes before saying "pup_421.sfs not found. Dropping out to initial ramdisk console" then it goes to "/bin/sh can't access tty; jon control turned off". then it stays like that and doesn't continue.

How does one make such a set up to be persistent so it saves changes to the system?
I found one suggestion in pendrivelinux site.
url
CLI work
Quote:
# Open a terminal and type sudo su (to become root)
# Type mkdir /projectinit (to make our project directory)
# Type cd /projectinit (to change to the project directory)
# Type gzip -dc /cdrom/casper/initrd.gz | cpio -i (to extract the initrd.gz)
# Type gedit init (to edit the init file)
and so on.
Too advanced for a newbie like me but it shows that it should be possible to save despite being in frugal install.
I have managed to do frugal install of both Linux Mint and Super OS which is a regular Ubuntu with bling bling, codex and three browsers instead of 1 and so on. I like SuperOS very much due to me as newbie usually fail to install things because I either make use of USB or frugal install to not wreck the windoe$.
so I dearly hope somebody that can linux can help me going.
Here is my current neogrub menu.lst
Quote
title superos
find --set-root /casper/vmlinuz
kernel /casper/vmlinuz file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu.seed boot=casper splash --
initrd /casper/initrd.gz
boot
title Linux Mint
find --set-root /casper/vmlinuz
kernel /casper/vmlinuz file=/cdrom/preseed/mint.seed boot=casper splash --
initrd /casper/initrd.gz
boot
As you can see. Both Ubuntu and Linux Mint can boot from the Neogrub menu.lst
But unfortunately due to them same name of folders one need to find a solution to how to have both going.
I used mint some 7 times and rebooted many times and it survived for some 7 hours.
Then I made it hidded in a subdirectory so boot could not find it and moved the SuperOS ubuntu out of its superdirectory and tested that one this whole day. From 7AM oclock to now 11pm with many reboots to see if it act well shutting down. It works very well but none of them save things.
One can save documents and pictures to the NTFS harddrive but bookmarks of the browser one need to send to email or place in a html file manually or join a bookmarks server online.
So I need help to get this saving to work.
DrG on brainstorm.ubuntu suggested that frugal install should be one of two options wubi and frugal install when people are asked how they want to install Ubuntu without doing partitioning and dual boot on Vista and Win7 machines.

I am not familiar with LVM at all, although I have successfully got it up and running in Slackware. What I would like to know is, could I create one Volume Group in a Physical Volume consisting at the moment of just one disk, and install separate Linux releases into Logical Volumes in this solitary VG? So, for example:
/dev/sda1 = Physical Volume
volgroup = Volume Group
lv01-root = Slackware root
[code]....

I've installed some Linux distributions over the past few weeks, and I've recently noticed that previous installations of Linux have left my hard drive cluttered with numerous 4 GB swap partitions. I've since deleted them, but is there any way to avoid this a priori in the future?

What could I be doing wrong or what repositories are short on my openSuse 11.0 to have the installation work. I downloaded the correct version of vodafone for my system.

I have disks of Lucid Puppy 5.11 and MacPup 5.11. Both disks run very well on my laptop, an old 2001 model Sony Vaio which is already booting Ubuntu 10.04 UNE.
But neither finishes loading on my HP Pavilion a1020n desktop, which is running Windoze XP Home. They both bog down on looking for optical drives... interesting as I am loading them from CD and it reads the optical drives fine up to that point.
It's sad that a quick-loading portable Linux won't load at all on my newer, faster machine.
Maybe it's because the laptop has GRUB already? My HP chokes every time I try to modify the boot sector, lots of "wonderful" security features to keep Windoze from "getting corrupted".

I'm fairly new to linux, I can't get puppy to connect to ANY wireless network, protected or not. The driver autodetected my wireless card (IBM high rate wireless LAN with modem II) as an Intersil Prism 2.5 chipset, but it will not work. I wonder if the driver is corrupted, or if I should just use ndiswrapper with the windows drivers. Obviously, I would prefer to use native linux drivers, but the wrapper will not tax the system too much if I use that option. I have heard that these laptops are very linux friendly, and I ran xubuntu on it for quite some time with no big problems. My home router is a Belkin F6D4230-4 V3. This thing will not show up at all, but my family's old linksys will, I can't connect to it either.

I know there are many threads about dual boot linux windows. I did a search but couldn't find for this specific question. I'm planning to use Puppy Linux as my main OS on my P4 machine. I asked a friend of mine who knows Linux very well. I asked should I install Puppy alone on my P4 machine? He told me that I should dual boot with XP because sometimes Linux alone does not compatible with graphic card, sound card, Ethernet adapter, etc. If dual boot Linux with Windows. They both can share the same drivers. Is it true?

I have just booted to Puppy (for the first time in my life) on a 6 y/o amd type with a 40Gb HD, Ram: 512.I would like to make a permanent install of puppy onto the HD, I have read various pieces on how to install, defraging, repartitioning, differing file systems. However, i am a bit lost. The computer will be used for e-mail, web browsing, and watching the odd film (films installed on the drive) - I am unsure as to the best combination of file types and partition in order to keep puppy happy and keep some compatibility with the world outside of linux.
For instance, could i have a small partition with the puppy install and setting, and the rest on a format that would be compatible with windows/mac/linux? If so, how do I do this, pls bare in mind that my windows install is running but incomplete. I have the feeling this will be a really simple problem for someone to help me with,
