General :: Debian Lenny Expects Udev On Vps That Doesn't Support It

Feb 17, 2010

Primary symptom: /proc/self/fd is there and normally populated, however /dev/fd is not. Process substitution therefore fails, because bash wants to create files under /dev/fd./dev/.static/ and /dev/.udev are populated. aptitude udev shows that the Debian package is installed, even though udev cannot be supported on this Xen vps (and, I believe, isn't supported by default until later stable versions of the Linux kernel).

I can solve the immediate problem by symlinking from proc/self/fd to /dev/fd, and putting the appropriate script in init.d. But are there any risks arising from Debian being misinformed about what my vps can do? And if so, what should I do about it?

Hardware :: Debian Lenny And Support For WD 4K Sector Hard Drives

Jan 15, 2010

As you are probably aware that WD released new drives ranging from 1TB to 2TB with native support for 4K sector size. And as most of stuff written online is regarding Windows and their support for 4K, my question is has anyone already started to use it under linux?

[url]
[url]

I'm thinking about getting one of these drives:
1TB WD10EARS
or
1.5TB WD15EARS

I'm using Debian Lenny so my questions are: is fdisk automatically recognizes that that drive is 4K drive, or it totally ignores it and partition is as 512byte one? In windows if no 4K support is available it would emulate it and performance would be downgraded. Do I need to enable any specific components in kernel so 4K drive is supported? I wanted to make sure there would be no data loss if I select 4K partition type.

General :: Script In Udev Rule Doesn't Run?

Jan 13, 2010

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) on a laptop and would like NumLock to automatically toggle depending on whether my USB keyboard is plugged in (numlock on) or unplugged (numlock off).

To accomplish this, I first installed the "numlockx" package. numlockx on and numlockx off works fine.

To hook into the device system, I thought I'd use udev. I have read "Writing udev rules", but I'm having trouble getting the udev rule to work.

First, here's an example of the dmesg output:

General :: Debian Lenny : How To Install Xfce 4.6 Instead Of Lenny's 4.4

Dec 14, 2009

i was trying to use gnome and kde but i don't like them. I tried xfce and it seem to fit my needs but.My computer is used to be powered on for a weeks. While time passes, a process xfdesktop begin to use more and more memory and to free RAM i need to log out and log in again.

I tried squeeze yesterday on my virtual machine and it has 4.6 and seem not to have that bug, RAM usage is static(yes it still works when i write this and have memory usage 34492k, which is not changing for an hours of usage already), also 4.6 is MUCH better than 4.4.

i already tried adding squeeze to "sources.list" but i can see too many dependencies which should be upgraded if i install 4.6, i'm beginning to afraid it can crash entire GUI(or entire system, i can see there is libc6 required to be updated).

Debian :: Opera On Lenny Doesn't Recognize Hyperlinks

Mar 22, 2009

I've got a box running Etch which seems to have a bad memory controller (I get segmentation faults left, right and centre) so I've built a new 'puter with twice the CPU power (2.4Ghz Intel Q6600 vs Athlon 1000+) and four times the RAM (2Gig vs 512M). I downloaded Lenny three days ago and, apart from some screen resolution issues which I've been discussing in the Newbie forum, most things have been working just fine.

However, I downloaded Opera yesterday (opera_9.64.2480.gcc4.qt3_i386.deb - same version I've been using on the Etch box) and I've seen some strange behaviour. A lot of sites, this one for example, work as expected, but if I go to, for example, www.bbc.co.uk or www.guardian.co.uk, the hyperlinks don't work, the cursor doesn't change to a hand when I hover over the links and clicking over the links doesn't do anything. The same pages work normally using Opera on my Etch box so it seems to be an issue with Lenny, or maybe Gnome on Lenny (I have KDE on the Etch box).

Debian Installation :: 5.0.3 'Lenny Missing Drivers \ Doesn't Work At All?

Feb 27, 2010

In reply to my last question about Wireless incompatibility in Debian 5.0.3 'Lenny', I found out it was because of missing drivers that I chose to ignore, despite the notifications. Now I've got this problem again, this time with different hardware and a different distribution of Debian (Debian Testing 'Squeeze' i386). As well as asking me to load up ipw2100-1.3.fw (of which I already have), it asks me to load tigon/tg3_tso5.bin. Loading the firmware is no problem. Finding and downloading nthe firmware is the problem here.I've searched through packacges and bug reports for a dowload link, but I've only come across a bundle with the driver I need, as well as a few unneeded extras. IT doesn't work at all.

Debian Installation :: Lenny - +Adaptec 3405 - Installs Ok But Doesn't Start

Feb 22, 2010

I'm installing a file server on Lenny (Samba on RAID5, nothing exotic)

First, I installed on a basic SATA drive, to check everything else in the system was recognized correctly. Success.

Then, I added my 3405 Adaptec board, with a 3 drive RAID5, and reinstalled, still on the lone SATA disk.

Install runs ok, shows correctly the 3405 board, detects the logical drive alongside with the SATA drive. Smooth. I install Lenny on the SATA drive, planning to use the RAID5 for later partitioning and data storage. During install, the SATA disk is shown as SCSI-1 and the RAID5 disk as SCSI-2. Again, install completes correctly.

But on reboot and after selecting the default config, the system complains it can't find /dev/sda1!

If I remove the 3405 board, Lenny boots fine.

Is the presence of the Adaptec board and RAID5 drive changing the numbering of the disks, so that the SATA disk is no longer seen as /dev/sda1 ?

Debian :: Doesn't Support Flash On The Web - Simultaneously Work With Two Or Three Different Languages?

Dec 10, 2010

I have worked with it for some weeks when I installed it over the summer on my PowerPC. I am now trying to decide whether Debian (vs. Ubuntu) is the right OS for my brand new Toshiba Intel Core i3 with 3 GB of RAM.

1. Flash -- it is true that Debian doesn't support flash on the web? It certianly did not support flash on my PowerPC. I would appreciate if someone can give me a straight answer on this.

2. Languages -- can I simultaneously work with two or three different languages on Debian? I frequently have to type in several languages (e.g., English, French, Persian, Turkish). I am writing a dissertation, so this is very important to me.

3. Finally where can I read a little about comparison between Debian and Ubuntu? My understanding is that Debian is faster than Ubuntu and generally better. Ubuntu is after all based on Debian which means that it's secondary in stability, features, speed, etc. to Debian. Is this generalization correct? Or am I completely off the wall?

Debian Hardware :: Wheezy Doesn't Properly Support Proprietary Firmware For Wireless Card

Mar 17, 2015

I recently installed the XFCE spin of Debian (amd64) on my Lenovo L440. I tried installing it before, but apparently the 3.2 kernel that ships with Wheezy doesn't properly support the proprietary firmware for the wireless card, blah blah. So I wound up using Windows 8.1 for a bit, and then Fedora (boo). Anyway, with the wheezy-backports kernel (3.16.7-ckt4-3~bpo70+1) everything works like a charm. Everything, that is, apart from the sound card — the entire system is completely mute. Well, apart from the system beeper. I searched the forum and found another thread, but that guy was (for some reason) just running dwm — I figured XFCE might feature a more complete sound system. But maybe the output he gave will be useful in my case as well:

Code: Select alleirik@gerhardsen:~$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: HDMI [HDA Intel HDMI], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: HDMI [HDA Intel HDMI], device 7: HDMI 1 [HDMI 1]

[code]...

I also tried running alsactl init (as root), which doesn't appear to have made any difference.

I would love to be able to use TrueCrypt consistently across all my machines, be they Windows or Linux. As it stands, I can do full-disk encryption with pre-boot authentication only on Windows.

I don't really understand why this is. Are there technical challenges specific to Linux/Mac that make full disk encryption harder? Does anyone know whether TrueCrypt will support this in the near future.

PS. yes, I'm aware that there are other options. My goal is to simplify my life here and use the one tool across all machines.

General :: Installing KDE 4.x On Debian 5/Lenny?

Oct 22, 2010

I've recently started trying out Debian 5 coming from Ubuntu. I'm very much in love with KDE 4.4 now they've fix it so it actually runs. but I'm unable to install it on Debian 5.

Right now I have Debian 5.0.3 on an Asus Eee netbook, and it's running KDE 3.5.x. I installed this from a Disk marked Debian, Official CD KDE i386, Debian GNU/Linux 5.0.3 "Lenny" (I bought the entire 33 CD set.)

I've tried to install KDE 4.x via synaptic, using the kdebase-runtime-bin-kde 4:4.1.0-2.

Even after a 3h download and install, it still boots with KDE 3.x. There is no switching to KDE 4.x in the KDM as well.

I've been unable to find a repository. I thought about using a Ubuntu KDE install, but after reading some posts here, I thought I'd better ask your opinions first. (Which I should ask too. if I see programs I like in Ubuntu, should I just compile them from tarballs instead of the .DEB binary to make sure they work in Debian 5?)

Should I wait till Debian.org actually puts KDE 4.x on their repositories (I hear the next version will have KDE 4.5.x on disk.)

System:
Asus Eee 1000HA
1.67ghz ATOM processor
2g memory
160g HD
Grub2
Debian 5.0.3, w/KDE 3.5.10
Ubuntu 9.04/Gnome

General :: Switching Locale(s) To URF-8 In Debian Lenny?

Apr 2, 2010

In accordance with directives - possibly misunderstood - I have reconfigured the Debian "locales" package; I changed the installed locale from en_US.ISO-8859-1 to en_US.UTF-8 and left the default locale for the system as "none". So far so good. In my ".bashrc" file, I have an entry for "LC_LANG".

If this entry is set to "en_US.ISO-8859-1" all my texts are readable on the console but I get warnings like: Gtk-WARNING **: Locale not supported by C library. Using the fallback 'C' locale If I change the LC_LANG entry to "en_US.UTF-8", I no longer get these warnings but the screen-display of Midnight Commander (mc) is a real mess. And even man-pages are no longer able to display hyphens (-) correctly.
