General :: Windows - How To Plug DNS Leaks When Running OpenVPN

Mar 22, 2011

I've set up OpenVPN on a Linux server. All my Internet traffic goes through the VPN from that server. I'm running Windows 7 at home. I noticed in Wireshark that DNS queries are not going through the encrypted tunnel, but instead directly to my ISP's designated DNS servers.

To overcome this, I tried pushing DNS for OpenVPN from the server to my computer, and also inputting the DNS address in my wireless adapter's configuration options. This appears to have secured the DNS leak, but is it the proper way to go about it? If I didn't push the DNS address from the server to the client and only set the DNS in the client's wireless adapter, then I couldn't visit any website. And if I just pushed the DNS but didn't set it in the adapter, then some DNS requests still leaked to the ISP's DNS servers.

General :: Gnome - Plug-ins To Let Me Do `<Win>`+`<Num>` Style App Switching (like Windows 7's Superbar)?

Using Windows 7's superbar, I can select/launch the 2nd application group by <Win>+<2>. We have DockbarX in GNOME, which is nice (grouping the windows like Windows 7), but it doesn't enable the <Win>+<2> style keybaord shortcuts. This is not restricted to making Linux like Windows. But I just find the <Win>+<2> style shortcut very useful. Are there similar ways in Linux to quickly switch between specific apps without pressing <Alt>+<Tab> many many times?

General :: Windows - Routing Everything Except A Certain IP Range Through An OpenVPN Tunnel?

Aug 31, 2011

I've been working with my OpenVPN server for a while, and I have a rather interesting problem. I need to redirect all client traffic through the tunnel except for a couple IP's that need to be resolvable locally. The way I'm doing this is pushing these routes from the server:

Server 'PUSH' directives

push "redirect-gateway def1 bypass-dhcp"
push "dhcp-option DNS 8.8.8.8"
push "dhcp-option DNS 8.8.4.4"

I'm seeing that translating into these Windows routes:

Windows routes occurring

Wed Aug 31 15:14:35 2011 PUSH: Received control message: 'PUSH_REPLY,redirect-gateway def1 bypass-dhcp,dhcp-option DNS 8.8.8.8,dhcp-option DNS 8.8.4.4,route 10.8.0.1,topology net30,ping 5,ping-restart 30,ifconfig 10.8.0.6 10.8.0.5'
Wed Aug 31 15:14:35 2011 ROUTE default_gateway=192.168.1.254

Wed Aug 31 15:14:40 2011 C:WINDOWSsystem32
oute.exe ADD 199.[*.*.*] MASK 255.255.255.255 192.168.1.254
Wed Aug 31 15:14:40 2011 C:WINDOWSsystem32
oute.exe ADD 0.0.0.0 MASK 128.0.0.0 10.8.0.5
Wed Aug 31 15:14:40 2011 C:WINDOWSsystem32
oute.exe ADD 128.0.0.0 MASK 128.0.0.0 10.8.0.5
Wed Aug 31 15:14:40 2011 C:WINDOWSsystem32
oute.exe ADD 10.8.0.1 MASK 255.255.255.255 10.8.0.5

I've hidden my server's IP beginning with 199 for security purposes. What I've gathered.I'm assuming that 0.0.0.0 is a kind of code for "everything," so I'm not sure how I could get this to work, but the general idea is that I need a specific IP range (172.16.*) to be resolvable on the LOCAL NETWORK (of the client) meaning it does not go through the VPN tunnel and the client can connect to 172.16.* locally. Is this possible? Routes can be executed through the command line, server "push" or client config options. Any way to get this to work while still routing other traffic through would do, really.

Additional Info: I have the server running on Debian 64-bit and the client running on Windows 7 (although Vista needs to work as well).Client/server configs can be provided if needed.

Ubuntu :: Windows Media Player Plug-in For 10.10 - Get Sound - No Video

Mar 3, 2011

Recently I decided to leave Windows and go with Linux. To try out I downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 and I can't be happier. I'm still getting used to how things work around here. Anyway I have an account at a website where I watch free TV, thing is the website uses Windows Media Player to stream the TV channels. I downloaded a bunch of plug-ins like VLC player, MPlayer and some other but all I get is the sound from the channels, no video other than some stupid graphics like when you play a song in Windows Media Player. So I wanted to ask you guys if you can help a brother out and please be as detailed as possible as to what to do because I'm still getting used to working in this environment.

I found this to be an interesting take on a problem which has plagued encryption since before the Internet:

Quote:

Popular online applications may leak your private data to a network eavesdropper, even if you're using secure web connections, according to a new paper by Shuo Chen, Rui Wang, XiaoFeng Wang, and Kehuan Zhang. (Chen is at Microsoft Research; the others are at Indiana.) It's a sobering result -- yet another illustration of how much information can be leaked by ordinary web technologies.

Debian Multimedia :: Windows Media Player Plug-in / Codec For Rhythmbox / Iceweasel

Dec 7, 2015

[URL]So, I want to hear the state-owned Portuguese radio that plays Classical Music, called "Antena 2", by either (1) clicking its website's listening "popup" window - [URL]- or by (2) adding such radio to my Rhythmbox list.

And, I would like to hear such a radio without having to install the proprietary "Flash" plug-in... And, if I'm forced to install any proprietary plug-in, I would rather install some "gstreamer" package(?) instead. But, preferably, what I would like, would be to use a Free Software alternative, if possible.

But, in the meantime, this is what happens...

1. If I click the above-mentioned link, to the corresponding "popup" window ([URL]), I can't hear anything.

2. If I click on a link at the bottom of that same "popup" window, that says "Listen to the broadcast in Windows Media Player" - [URL] - I'm sent to an identical listening "popup" window/page, where I still can't hear anything - and whose difference is that, now, the link at the bottom of the page says "Listen to the broadcast in Flash" [URL]

That is, this radio's website presents me two alternatives. That are, to listen to it

(1) using the "Flash" technology ([URL]), or

(2) using some "Windows Media Player" technology/codec/format ([URL])

The first of which I would very much like to not have to install, and the second of which I suspect there might be some plug-in package for, that I can install, that will make it possible for me to hear this radio.

And, the reason I suspect the latter, is because, if I try to add the link to the "Windows Media Player" page ([URL]) to my Rhythmbox's list of radios, I get the error message: "Your GStreamer installation is missing a plug-in."

So, which package(s) do I have to install, to be able to listen to this radio on the web - or, even better, through my Rhythmbox list of radios?

Ubuntu Servers :: OpenVPN Slow When Windows Is Used ?

May 16, 2010

I have many openvpn implementations. Every time I use windows shares over openvpn, the speed is no more than 500KB/s, in LAN environment. When I start a copy it reaches 200-300KB/s, when I start second one it reaches 500KB/s. No more is reached after more copies simultaneously. When I use linux to copy files - the first copy reaches 700KB/s, the second copy reaches 2.5MB/s (then the first grows also to 2.5MB/s), the third copy reaches also 2.5MB/s. All of these are copied simultaneously, otherwise when only one is started it sits on 700KB/s. Moreover when 2 of the 3 simultaneous copy processes end, the one left backs at 700KB/s again.

But this is linux. When I use Windows the transfer speed is no more than 400-500KB/s (LAN environment).
The OpenVPN server is always ubuntu (any version - I've tried 6.06, 8.04, 10.04).

Tried the OpenVPN client in ubuntu (and the windows machine behind the ubuntu), in windows (directly installed the client on windows) and it is all the same - no more than 500KB/s.

I can not use this because it is so slooow. When only one file is copied at a time it reaches only 200KB/s!!! Searched all the google results - no one have an answer, although there are many people with the same problem.

Now, I am sure that the problem is in Windows, because when I use linux as a server and as a client, the client copies fast. But when I use windows as machine behind the client it copies slow. I don't know... something in the tcp/ip settings in windows or something...

Server :: OpenVPN Range Address / When Change Static IP To Dynamic IP In Config File OpenVPN Didn't Work?

Feb 13, 2010

I want to configure a VPN over the Internet.I installed the 'openvpn' package, generated the key file, transfered it by a secure way to the client, and setted up the configuration file.

So, in that configuration file I input the IP addresses of the tunneled interfaces. Both IPs are static in the tunnel.

Then, I've heard somewhere that I can assign a dynamic configuration IP for the client. I do this registering a range.

Well, when I tried to change static IP to dynamic IP (changing '192.168.0.2' to '192.168.0.0/24') in the configuration file, the OpenVPN didn't work.

Obviously I don't know what I'm doing, and I really, don't believe that simply changing the IP will make it work, but I tried.

I hope I explained my problem as well.

My configuration file:

# OpenVPN Server Configuration File
dev tun 0
ifconfig 192.168.0.1 192.168.0.2
cd /etc/openvpn
secret key_file

In client I execute the 'openvpn' without the '--daemon' parameter. Then I want that my client uses a IP in a range (192.168.0.0/24, for example), instead of a static IP (192.168.0.2).I also thought to use a DHCP server, but I'm not sure that will work.

Red Hat / Fedora :: OpenVPN - Running As Non Admin - Error "opening Logfile"

Jan 5, 2010

I am using a custom OpenVPN install using 7zip. It installs the program and unzips the keys and configuration files to the correct location. This is being installed by an administrator and needs to work for non admin users. Before there was an issue about not pushing the routes correctly and I am going to get around that by adding the users to the Network Config group which will allow them to add routes but not a whole lot more power. Now I am getting the error "Error opening logfile for writing C:Program FilesOpenVPNlogclient.log.

You probably don't have administrator privileges, which are necessary to run OpenVPN." Is there anyway around this? OpenVPN still works even though this error occurs so is there anyway to just turn the error off (changing verb to 0 does not work) or recompile it to ignore this error? Is there anyway to change the logging location to event viewer or another directory such as C:Users\%currentuser%OpenVPN.log (when I try to do this with log or log-append option it throws another error and doesn't work so I would prefer event viewer so there wouldn't be any permission issues).

CentOS 5 Server :: Openvpn Connect To Samba Share From Windows XP Client?

Sep 15, 2009

I'm trying to set up a VPN connection between our CentOS 5.3 server at work and my bosses XP computer at home. At this point, we are kinda locked into Quickbooks. I'm testing the connection from my XP boot at home to see if it works. I can log into our servicemanuals easily enough from XP at home however, the windows takes forever to update. I have the Samba server only listening on port 445 because is seems to work more efficiently at work. I connect to the Samba shares via linux from home and everything works well but, when I try to do anything with the shares from Windows client at home, it's very slow!

I'm thinking that it must have something either to do with the Windows OpenVPN client or the client.conf file. Is there anything I should look at in the .conf file for answers?

On the same machine I have Ubuntu running in a virtual box and when using filezilla client in there it works fine. Now I want to try the command prompt. "cd" tells me that the current directory is "/" root, but this does not make sense in the windows operating system. Now the filezilla client is taking the user in the application window directly to the root folder of the permitted filespace granted to that user. How can the same be done from the command prompt, if there is a way? It is as if the command prompt takes me to the root which does not exist or even have correct permissions to move in. Is there any way to be taken to the correct directory directly, or move there especially when the slashes are the wrong way around etc?

General :: Windows XP Running As Guest On VirtualBox Is Very Slow

Aug 9, 2011

We had an old Windows XP server running a Filemaker database on a 2.6 GHz Intel CPU, but that server died. It's been replaced by a box with two 2.4 GHz Xeon CPUs and 5 GB of RAM that's running Ubuntu 11.04 natively, and Windows is running as a VirtualBox guest. 2GB of RAM has been dedicated to the Windows guest.Of course, these old Xeon CPUs don't have the VT-x extensions, so I wouldn't expect to be able to add CPUs to the VirtualBox guest, but the Filemaker database is running at least 2-3x slower than it did on the old server. I would expect that utilizing one 2.4GHz CPU out of four available shouldn't result in such an astounding difference.

I would also like to be able to continue using this setup, since it would also mean we'd be able to remove our Linux server from the rack, which is running on even slower hardware (not that the system requirements are high for its job though). So my question is: Why is this so slow? Is there anything I can do to change the situation? Or should I just give up now and find more suitable hardware?I understand that the "new" machine should be about 1% slower in theory, so please don't tell me this "should" be fine. I need more concrete answers (as in, "I've tried this before and you should do X") since in the real world, it appears to be about 50% slower. I'm about to blame "virtual" CPUs to multithreading on single core processors, and possibly the difference in CPU architecture between Xeon and Pentium 4 CPUs.

General :: Web Browsers Running Much Slower, Compared With Windows 7, Same PC?

Jan 28, 2010

Debian lenny, old install (I've upgraded to lenny when it was just about to become the stable release), versus windows 7, fresh install.Comparing browsers speeds with numion.com/Stopwatch.html, I had results such as:Iceweasel (firefox) on linux: from 9.154 seconds to 21:860 seconds (the same webpage, reloaded)Firefox on windows: 4.32 seconds - and never much slower than thatThe fastest browser on linux was Opera, ranging from 8.562 to 5.503 secs to load the same page, but even internet explorer beat/match it with its timing of about five seconds.

I have not other browsers on windows; on linux there is aroraonqueror (KDE3), kazehakase, chrome, and dillo, besides text browsers. I didn't test on dillo; Kazehakase and chrome were the only ones which had nearly decent results, but still very bad, 11 to 13 seconds for chrome, and 21 for kazehakase. Konqueror just seemed to never finish to load the page, I gave up when it was still loading somethingfter nutes and 5 seconds.'ve emptied the cache every time I would test, and I was running almost only the browsers and not much else. Whatever comes by default on windows, and on linux, I was on openbox, with nothing much going on I guess, I think the most memory consuming processthe time, besides xorg and the browsers themselves, was dictd.

I've researched a little bit about, but not enough to make a list of possible things to change in order to improve the speed on linux. Most of the time there are people just agreeing that on windows the rendering is faster, and other people saying that with them is the opposite, with some minor variations like people saying that linux is faster for plain downloads while windows is faster for web browsing due to better graphics.

(by the way; I haven't installed any graphic card driver on windows, which is still running on 1024x768, while linux runs on 1280x1024, with the "nv" generic driver, without fancy options, not supported by my old card) The closest to a suggestion of possible solutions was someone saying tha compilation may affect performance, I guess it was both about kernel compilation, and the web browsers themselves.I'll google a bit more about how to "compile for speed", both kernels and programs (maybe the x server
